Acquisition-Learning Distinction

This document discusses the distinction between language acquisition and language learning according to Stephen Krashen's Theory of Second Language Acquisition. It states that acquisition refers to the natural and subconscious process of picking up a language through meaningful exposure and engagement, while learning is the conscious understanding of formal rules through explicit instruction. The document then provides examples of language learning materials that could incorporate acquisition-based or learning-based approaches, drawing from theories of progressivism, behaviorism, cognitivism, and gestalt.

ACQUISITION-LEARNING

DISTINCTION

Prepared by:
GROUP 1
LESSON OBJECTIVES
Define acquisition-learning system in Second
Language Acquisition.
Differentiate acquisition and learning in SLA.
Design appropriate language learning materials .
3
THE ACQUISITION-LEARNING
DISTINCTION
Most fundamental among all hypotheses of

Stephen Krashen's Theory of SLA.

States that there is a distinction between

language acquisition and language learning.

6
ACQUISITION
Acquisition refers to the subconscious and natural process of
picking up a language by being exposed to it in meaningful
contexts.

Example:
A person acquires language skills by engaging in real-life
conversations, reading authentic texts, or listening to native speakers
without explicit attention to grammar rules.
6
LEARNING
Learning, on the other hand, is the conscious and explicit
understanding of language rules and formal knowledge about the
language.

Example:
A person learns language through explicit instruction in a classroom,
studying grammar rules, memorizing vocabulary lists, and consciously
practicing language skills.
6
LEARNING ACQUISITION
Grammar rules are explicitly taught Subconscious process
Learned through study and Grammar is acquired naturally
memorization through exposure
Focuses on form Tends to be more fluent and
More structured natural
Error correction is present Acquired through context and
Language Skill building usage
Conscious study of Language
Developing Appropriate Language
Learning Material
Acquisition-Learning Hypothesis
6
PROGRESSIVISM
-This theory emphasizes active learning and the learner's interests and
experiences. Language learning materials influenced by progressivism
theory may include:

project-based activities
real-life scenarios
song-related activities

This gives opportunities for learners to explore and discover language

concepts on their own.
6
BEHAVIORAL THEORY
- This theory focuses on observable behaviors and the use of
reinforcement to shape learning. Language learning materials
influenced by behavioral theory may include

drills
repetition exercise
structured activities

This provides the learners a clear instructions and immediate feedback

to reinforce correct language usage.
6
GESTALT THEORY
- This theory emphasizes the importance of understanding the whole
picture and how parts relate to each other. Language learning materials
influenced by gestalt theory may include activities that encourage
learners to
Identify patterns
Make connections
Understand the overall structure of the language

This provides the learners the importance of understanding the

relationship between different parts.
6
COGNITIVE THEORY

- This theory focuses on mental processes such as memory, attention,

and problem-solving. Language learning materials influenced by
cognitive theory may include

Strategies to enhance memory

Activities that promote critical thinking and problem-solving

This provides the learners how to process and store information and to
build their knowledge and understanding.

Real-Life Scenarios Activities

This could motivate learners and build their confidence in acquiring their
second language. This a way of allowing them to showcase their ability to
express a certain experience and life-lesson by making dialogues, stories
and scripts.

Audio/Video Presentations
This provides the students a dynamic and interactive learning
experience that can enhance comprehension, engagement, and
creativity.

Persuasive Speaking Activities

This can help students to develop their effective communication skills,
socialize and build their confidence in expressing their opinions and
ideas.

Interactive Conversation
Oral Recitation

Project-based Activities
This helps students to foster a deeper understanding, promote
collaboration, intetaction, and enhance their critical thinking skills.
