Liver Function Tests

GGT is raised when there is bile obstruction or inflammatory conditions that produce more unconjugated bilirubin than the liver can handle. Albumin is made in the liver so low levels indicate liver disease or bile duct blockage. ALP rises more than ALT in liver damage and hepatitis, while ALT and AST indicate inflammation and cell death in the liver.

GGT

bile obstruction

inflammatory conditions, raised when RBC breakdown

protein production in total bilirubin produces more unconjugated
urine bilirubin than liver can handle

low in loss of liver tissue liver disease

Albumin
made in liver bile duct blockage
e.g. gall stones

bile duct pressure increase

ALP ALT rises more than AST in
Liver function tests liver damage and
hepatitis (inflammation)
bone disease
more specific for liver

indicates inflammation and cell death

low in excessive ALT:AST - high ALT chronic liver
tissue loss or long disease, high AST- cirrhosis
standing disease Albumin AST
not specific
for coag tendencies - increased in liver disease normal in liver disease
Total protein total protein - albumin = globulin
long PT - deficiency of clotting
factors made by liver high values in hepatitis (also autoimmune hep)
Prothrombin time
vit K deficiency
