(Martinez) "Think back to your

favorite teacher or mentor. How did they impact your life, and how did your relationship with them
shape your educational journey?" The teacher-student relationship is not just a part of our schooling; it
significantly influences our personal development. That is why today we will discuss teacher-student
relationships' pros and cons. Good Morning, everyone. I am Kurt Kirstian Martinez, with my co-speakers
Ms. Amador, Mr. Bolo, Mr. Heruela, and Mr. Alcazar. Perhaps your teacher guided, inspired and
supported you through the joys and challenges of your educational journey. The teacher-student
relationship is a unique and fundamental component of our lives, shaping our experiences in ways that
often go beyond the classroom. Today, in this speech with my co-speaker, we'll navigate teacher-student
relationships' positive and negative aspects. This topic holds personal significance for us, as it can shape
our futures, inspire dreams, and influence our understanding of the world. Without further ado, I'd like
to introduce Mr. Bolo to talk about the positive impacts of the teacher-student relationship.

(Bolo) The first positive impact of the student-teacher relationship is practical learning.
Knowledge transfer is the core purpose of any educational relationship. Teachers play a pivotal role in
imparting knowledge, providing guidance, and facilitating a better understanding of the subject matter.
The transfer of expertise helps students acquire skills, gain insights, and grow academically. Next, the
student-teacher relationship promotes motivation. Motivation is equally essential because it drives
students to engage in learning. A motivated teacher can inspire students to be curious, set goals, and
work towards their objectives. In a non-intimate relationship, motivation can come from a genuine
passion for teaching and a desire to see students succeed.

(Hereula) This also shows inspirational guidance. Imagine a high school student struggling with
self-esteem issues. Their English teacher takes a genuine interest in their well-being, offering
encouragement and belief in the student's abilities. Over time, this relationship helps the student build
confidence and excel in their studies, ultimately pursuing a career in writing. Having this relationship also
provides a supportive role model. A middle school student is struggling with self-confidence and social
skills. Their English teacher, noticing the student's challenges, takes the time to have regular one-on-one
discussions. Through these conversations, the teacher listens, provides guidance, and helps students
develop better communication skills and self-esteem. Over time, the student's academic performance
improves, and they become more self-assured, thanks to this caring teacher's influence.

(Amador) Some students may feel that teachers show favoritism, which can create resentment
among peers. When teacher-student relationships go beyond the academic domain, there is a risk of
biases and subjectivities emerging in the classroom. Personal preferences or favoritism can inadvertently
impact grading, evaluations, and recommendations, undermining the fairness and credibility of the
educational system. Favoritism can disrupt the classroom dynamic and create a division among students.
This can decrease motivation and engagement for students who are not favored. Misunderstandings or
miscommunication can occur, leading to conflicts or dissatisfaction. When there is clarity or
interpretation of information, it can create tension and help the learning process. Misunderstandings can
lead to conflicts between students and teachers or among students themselves. These conflicts can
disrupt the classroom environment and hinder cooperation, collaboration, and mutual understanding.
When students feel misunderstood or need to be adequately addressed, they may become dissatisfied
with the learning experience. This dissatisfaction can lead to disengagement, reduced motivation, and a
decline in academic performance.

(Alcazar) Teacher-student relationships may impose teacher Þpendency, affecting students'

ability to learn independently. This approach can impede learners' critical thinking and problem-solving
skills, which are essential for independent learning. Besides, the relationship between student and
teacher can compromise boundaries, leading to power imbalance, eroding trust, and abuse. Such
actions can downplay the importance of boundaries between teachers and students.

(Martinez) In conclusion, the teacher-student relationship is a complex and essential part of the
educational experience. While it offers inspiration and practical learning, it can pose challenges like
favoritism and power imbalances. As we reflect on our experiences with teachers and mentors,
remember that a healthy, balanced teacher-student relationship can profoundly impact our growth and
development. As we consider today's lessons, let us reflect on a timeless saying by James Comer: “No
significant learning can occur without a significant relationship.” With this wisdom in mind, let us
continue to seek the joy of learning inspired by our teachers and mentors.
