Tom Crean

Early life
Tom Crean was born on 20th July 1877 in Kerry.
At age 15 he had an argument with his father, and ran away to join the navy, he lied that he was
sixteen and met Scott

1st Expedition
Scott wanted Tom Crean to join his mission because his sailor got into trouble and ran away
Tom was happy to join the mission, the mission to reach the North Pole before the Norwegian
team and the leader was Roald Amundsen.The ship Tom and Scott sailed in is the Discovery,
after a few hours or days or even months the team of Scott was at the North Pole for the first
time .The first time they experiences snow and ice but the down side was snow storms, blizzard
and frost bites .When they walked 400 miles Scott sent some of them back including Tom Crean
and his friends Tom Crean was disappointed to walk back 400 miles again on the way, 1 of his
friends was sick so Tom Crean went on with only a scrap of chocolate and 2 biscuits, in a few
days he got to base camp and Tom Crean sent a rescue team the saved Evan and his other
friend just in time before the died but Tom Crean wondered where is Scott , so Tom and his
teammates set look for Scott and his team but when they were found Scott and his team die
and his diary was open it said Roald Amundsen won the race before them he reached the North
Pole first Tom was sad because his friend died. After that they went home.

2nd expedition
In 1910 the 2nd mission was to reach the South Pole. The ship they were sailing in was called
the Terra Nova. While they were sailing they got stuck in the ice so they abandoned the ship.
But the sailors were sad because they loved the ship, so they got an explosive and blew up the
ice. But the explorers had to wait until the ice was melted so they made plans to get to the
South Pole.When the ice melted they agreed to leave some man in the South Pole. The people
on the ship travelled to get some supplies in New Zealand .The people in the South Pole made
a small wooden hut to shelter from the cold air and blizzards. There was no sunlight for 4
months so they made a guide rope to guide them to go to the toilet and come back to the
hut.After a while the ship came back with supplies of food and warm coats .So they travelled to
the South Pole but Scott wanted Tom and his friend go back to base camp Tom was sad to walk

so long again … while they were walking Evans got sick so the agreed to let Tom go and send a
rescue team ,while tom was walking he so base camp and sent a rescue team and Evans and
his friends were save but Tom was worried because Scott and his friends were out in the cold
air so Tom sent a team to find Scott but the team saw that the team was died Tom was really
sad.

3rd Expedition
The leader of the third expedition was Ernest Shackelton he wanted to walk all over the South
pole so he and his team and Tom was sailing in Endurance but they never set foot on the South
Pole the ship gut stuck in ice so the left the ship but the got in Elephant island so the sent Tom
and his friends on the James Caird so the sailed to South Georgia but they landed on the
wrong side of the island so they had to cross big mountains when the reach the right side of the
island the people there gave them a warm bath and cut of their hair that was so long but Tom
wanted to save his friends so he got a rescue team to save his team and they did.

End of his life


Tom Crean died 27 of july 1938 but before he died he got married and made a pub called the
South Pole Inn.
