CONSENT TO BE A RESEARCH SUBJECT

Study on Emotion, Rationality and Political Decision Making

KEY INFORMATION ABOUT THIS RESEARCH STUDY:


You are asked to take part in a research study because you are a consenting adult
that lives within the US. This study is being conducted by Dylan Jancse, an
undergraduate at the University of South Carolina. The purpose of this study is to
analyze the influences of emotion on political decision making.

PROCEDURES:
If you agree to be in this study, you will be randomly selected to participate in either
the control group or the experimental group. Once selected, you will complete a
survey that includes up to 31 questions. These questions will include questions on
demographics, political affiliation, and opinions on different policy positions.

DURATION:
Completing the survey should take about 12 minutes to complete

RISKS/DISCOMFORTS:
The survey may ask political questions that one may be uncomfortable with
answering. If one is not comfortable with answering any of the questions in the
survey survey, one will be able to quit participating without receiving repercussions.
There are no known physical risks with participating in this study.

BENEFITS:
Taking part in this study is not likely to benefit you directly. However, the findings
from this study may help people know more about how changes in an individual’s
emotional state affect one’s decision-making regarding policy decisions.

COMPENSATION TO PARTICIPANTS:
You will be compensated with extra credit upon the full completion of the study. No
extra credit will be rewarded if participation is terminated prematurely.

USC STUDENT PARTICIPATION:


Participation in this study is voluntary. You are free not to participate, or to stop
participating at any time. Your participation, non-participation, and/or withdrawal will
not affect your grades or your relationship with your professors, college(s), or the
University of South Carolina.

If research credit is required for successful course completion, other alternative


means for obtaining credit are available and you may discuss these options with
your course instructor.

CONFIDENTIALITY OF RECORDS:

This study only collects data that you have consented to give. Any identifying
information collected in the study will be discarded after collection. Information
obtained about you during this research may be published, but you will not be
identified. Only the primary investigators will have access to the raw data, which will
be stored on password locked computers.

VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION:
Taking part in this research study is voluntary. You are free not to take part, or to
stop taking part at any time. If you withdraw from this study, the information that you
have given will be discarded. If you wish to withdraw from the study, please call or
email the main researcher who is listed on this form.

Concerns about your rights as a research subject are to be directed to, Lisa
