Global Citizenship Essay
The Ambassador School of Global Leadership encourages us as students to become
open-minded, caring, risk-takers, communicators, and knowledgeable leaders. ASGL’s
mission and vision is to establish well-rounded leaders who are college and
career-ready while also being globally aware. ASGL prepares us for any situation
outside of school making us ready to engage in different situations. Global citizens are
able to be globally aware of other’s views/situations
The qualities of a Global Citizen differ from the person but the most important would
be a risk taker and communicator. Misty Copeland is an example of a global citizen; she
is a risk-taker and a Communicator. Misty Copeland had an amazing influence on the
dance world. Misty has been a role model to many young girls. She made history by
becoming the first African American female principal dancer with the most prestigious
American Ballet Theatre. Even when her life wasn’t easy and she had struggles, She
took the risk of continuing her journey in dance without knowing where she might be in
her career. Which led to her becoming the first African American dancer who made way
for the younger generation. She never gave up on her dream even if she had no one to
look up to she made way for herself and made her dream come true. She expresses her
communication skills in two different ways with her dancing and public speaking on how
we can make the dance world more inclusive through interviews. She took action to
speak out on how we can change the issue of there not being representation for young
girls like her. She spoke on the issue of there not being many options for pointe shoes,
tights, and leotards for young girls of color. She also spoke on the issues she had during
her career process, she spoke about how much harder she had to work from the rest.
Misty Copeland is a great example of a Global Citizen she uses the two most important
quintiles that are needed to be a global citizen.
Being part of ASGL I have become a global citizen who has developed the skills of
being a open-minded and caring person. ASGL is a very diverse school that
encourages us to learn about our culture and others as well. ASGL helped me grow to
become an open-minded person by interacting with students of different backgrounds
and cultures. I have learned to be open to other’s ideas and opinions when participating
with other students. When I am open to other’s ideas I am open to acknowledging and
investigating many viewpoints, cultures, ideas, and concepts. Being open-minded is an
essential trait to develop especially when we work with others. Being open-minded I
have also developed being caring. I have improved in being caring towards others. At
school, we are shown to respect others and show kindness to everyone no matter how
different we are. We should respect and care for others we can never know what others
might be going through so it is important to be a caring person and demonstrate it in any
way possible. An example would be helping classmates who might be having trouble
understanding a concept during class, we can also help teachers with passing out
papers or other things as well. Being in ASGL I got to improve these skills which are
important to have once we graduate from high school.
The two Learner Profiles I would like to improve for the future would be Balanced and
Reflective. Being balanced is balancing schoolwork, jobs, and my personal life like
hobbies. This is important because in the future it’s good to have this skill developed so
there is enough time to spend on each activity. It is important to have a schedule for
when and how long I spend on each activity so we can have time for everything I need
to do. But also we have to know when to stop and focus on ourselves emotionally.
Being reflective is another skill I would like to improve on because I would like to reflect
on decisions that I make and decide whether I have learned something or if I have
failed. I also would like to reflect on and understand my strengths and weaknesses
which is helpful to know when I apply for a job. These are the future Learner Profiles I
would like to improve on for the future.
The Ambassador School of Global Leadership challenges us as learners to develop
into compassionate, risk-taking, open-minded, communicative, and informed leaders.
ASGL provides us with the skills necessary to handle any circumstance that may arise
outside of the classroom. ASGL prepares us like citizens of the world to understand the
viewpoints and circumstances of others on a global scale. Being part of ASGL I got to
develop some of these skills like being open-minded, caring, a risk-taker- taker and
communicator. This is how ASGL has impacted me as a person and how I have learned
to be a global citizen.
