Emotions XI

The document discusses several theories of emotion: 1) The James-Lange theory proposes that emotion-provoking events cause physiological arousal which leads to the subjective experience of emotion. 2) The Cannon-Bard theory suggests that emotion-provoking events simultaneously cause physiological reactions and emotional experiences. 3) The Schachter-Singer theory posits that emotional experiences result from the combination of physiological arousal and cognitive interpretation of the arousal. This theory emphasizes the role of cognition in emotions.

CHAPTER: EMOTIONS
UNIT 4

Q- What is meant by emotion? [1]

Answer
The word emotion is derived from the Latin word ‘emovere’ which means ‘to stir up’ or ‘to
excite’. They involve three major components:
(1) physiological changes within our bodies—shifts in heart rate, blood pressure, and so on;
(2) subjective cognitive states—the personal experiences we label as emotions; and
(3) expressive behaviors—outward signs of these internal reactions.

Q- Who gave the primary emotions. Name the different primary emotions. [1]

Answer
Paul Ekman named the six primary emotions. They are the following:
Anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise.

Q. Discuss the James- Lange theory of emotion. [5]

Answer
𝐸𝑚𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑜𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐸𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡 → 𝑃ℎ𝑦𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝐴𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑠𝑎𝑙 → 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑡 → 𝐸𝑚𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛

James-Lange theory suggests that emotion-provoking events produce various physiological

reactions and that recognition of these is responsible for subjective emotional experiences.
This theory reversed the old common-sense notion about the sequence of the arousal of
emotions. The previous sequence was we see a bear, we feel afraid, we run. According to the
new theory, order was changed to we see a bear, we run, we feel afraid.
William James himself explained (1890): “We feel sorry because we cry, angry because we
strike, and afraid because we tremble.”

Q- Discuss the Cannon-Bard theory of emotion. [5]

Answer
𝐸𝑚𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑜𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐸𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡 → 𝑃ℎ𝑦𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑅𝑒𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 + 𝐸𝑚𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛

Cannon-Bard theory suggests that various emotion-provoking events simultaneously produce

subjective reactions labeled as emotions and physiological arousal.
It proposed that the lower brain centers, specifically the thalamus and hypothalamus are
responsible for inciting emotional reactions. After perceiving a stimulus, the sensory impulses
reach the lower brain centers. From there they are carried simultaneously to the internal organs
and the cerebral cortex. The cerebral cortex, therefore, receives and experiences emotion at the
same time.

Q- Discuss the Schachter-Singer theory of emotion. [5]

Answer

𝐸𝑚𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑣𝑜𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐸𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡 → 𝑃ℎ𝑦𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑅𝑒𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 + 𝐶𝑜𝑔𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 → 𝐸𝑚𝑜𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛

Schachter-Singer theory suggests that our emotional arousal depends on both physiological
changes and the cognitive interpretation of those changes. One cannot work without the other. It
helps us to learn that the emotional experience and physiological changes through which we
pass are determined by the way we interpret a situation through cognitive functioning.

Q. Which theory of emotion talks about the role of cognition in emotions? [1]

Answer.
Schachter Singer Theory talks about the role of cognition in emotions.
