NEW CLUB NEAR CREWE

Shooters in the Crewe area are being invited to check
out the facilities at an exciting new range. Brook Valley
Target Sports is based at Walnut Tree Farm Fishery,
just off the M6. Launched earlier this year, it already
has 20 field target lanes and a plinking range with
targets out to 55m.
The ground is currently open every other Sunday, but
the team plans to open every day of the week and to
extend the facilities to include a clubhouse and 100m
plinking range. All they need to deliver that vision is the
support of local shooters.
Brook Valley’s next open competition takes place on
Sunday 11th December. See the club’s Facebook group

ebranding is always a gamble, but
R when it comes to huge, multi-national
companies it’s a very bold move indeed.
During the recent launch event for this rifle,
we were made aware that Brocock is in the
process of a gradual rebranding to BRK,
and what better time to announce it than at
the launch of their new Ghost.

HIGH POWER!
When I received the invitation to this
launch event, held at the excellent
Oakedge Shooting Ground in Staffordshire,
I became rather excited. Not just because
I wanted to find out what the Ghost was all
about, or because I’d finally get to spend a
day with our new Air Gunner editor, Mat
Manning. No, the real reason why I was so
excited was that I had been informed that I
could spend an hour or more on the range

owning such a magnificent rifle.

ADJUSTABLE POWER
One thing you’ll notice from the get go is the
massive potential for power adjustment with
these rifles. All of the Ghosts are fitted with
Huma regulators, with reg’ pressure viewed
on a gauge on the left-hand side of the stock,
which can be adjusted on the FAC rifles by
turning the knob above the neck of the bottle.
They also feature a power wheel just in front of
the butt pad, which adjusts the hammer
spring tension with no less than 20 settings!
It’s not as practical for most of us Sub-12ers,
but those of you who shoot FAC will have
hours of fun tweaking and tuning, for sure.
That being said, there will most definitely be
occasions when a subtle tweak of the dial will
help with accuracy, but we’re entering the
realms of pellet testing and performance here

The Red Fire had done just that, so it should

everything, other pellets had actually
bettered the Red Fire. – ‘Them’s the rubs’,
as they say. Have a look at the table above

So, now I had to pick a winner, which was

Short, a 7.4mm pellet that is likely to fit into
your magazine, (do please check, though),
can provide a group size of just 8.01mm at
20m(ish) and a set of ballistic
characteristics that most pellets would be
proud of.
You will have noticed that I’ve described
the group size of the Crossman SSP as
‘unknown’. This is because only four of the
five pellets fired actually hit the card, giving
a minimum group size of some 90mm, the
fifth failing to hit the card at all! »

yards, which is perfect for most of my
squirrel bashing – longer or shorter shots
are easily catered for, but it’s pretty much
‘point and shoot’ between 35 and 75 yards.
My trail cams had pinpointed a few greys
showing up in what I classed as a ‘red only’
area, so I was there at first light. It was a new
and difficult wood and I hadn’t built any
hides or vantage points to overlook the
feeders and scatter feed because until now
there had been no greys. I’d just
supplementary fed the reds, but now that
greys had been confirmed in the area, I had
to act quickly and try to clear these invaders
as soon as possible.

MASKED PRESENCE
The floor of the wood was undulating, and
my feeder had been positioned at 50 yards
from the entrance, but my presence was
slightly masked by dying brambles that had
climbed the spruce trees and formed slight
cover, so I would also be able to adapt the
prone position once venturing deeper into
the spruces.
The first thing I do, even before entering
the wood, is to scan round with the thermal
spotter to see if anything is showing. A good
thermal spotter will see deep into the
darkest of woods and locate any heat source
that might need further attention.
I always start at ground level and work
upward to the treetops, and if that’s all clear, I
move on for about 10 paces, then re-scan. I
continue with this process either until I’m
satisfied that the area is clear, or I spot a target
– I use this method for my rabbiting, too.
This time there was no moving on
because the unmistakeable glow of a

InfiRay’s viewfinder. At 50 yards I wanted a
support for the shot, but a slight breeze
caused the only available support, a thin
spruce, to sway in the breeze, so I had to be
patient before taking the shot.

DEVASTATING SHOT
The Airmax confirmed that it was indeed a
grey and as the air stilled briefly, I had an
opportunity to take the shot. Even at 50
yards, the strike from the Wildman slug was
devastating, causing maximum head trauma
and an instant kill. There had to be more
skinnies waiting in the wings, so I decided to
utilise a carbon-fibre K800 tripod from KJI,

Terry finds just the right person to appreciate Ken Turner’s personal rifle.

n terms of airgun development, Ken

I Turner was one of our sport’s most
influential contributors. I was lucky to call
him a friend, and it was a privilege to help
test some of the ideas he came up with,
often side-by-side with him, on our club
range at Bisley. One of the most memorable
of Ken’s rifles was his ‘stainless slider’,
which I featured inthe November issue, and
shooting it again after Ken had passed away
was a truly emotional experience.
Ken’s widow, Jean, asked me to find the
best home for the rifle, and it was her wish,
as it certainly would have been Ken’s, to
place that incredible airgun with someone
who would truly appreciate it. I believe I
have done that.

MEET POLISH PETE

Polish Pete – it’s his preferred name – was
a former member of Bisley, and our paths
crossed again at the funeral of another of
our sport’s great innovators, John
Whiscombe. I was honoured to give the
eulogy at John’s funeral service, and Pete,
who like me was a friend of the great man,
paid me the ultimate compliment, by saying
that my speech had really captured John’s
persona. That endorsement means more
than Pete could realise.
Pete is an unstoppably enthusiastic
airgun shooter, and he collects airguns
made by John Whiscombe and Ken Turner.

MUTUAL ADMIRATION
Ken and John were there together at the
very beginning of what became the ‘field
target shooting revolution’, and there was a
genuine mutual admiration between them.
Both were engineers, and both qualified for
the ‘quiet genius’ label, although neither
would acknowledge such an award.
After Ken had tuned my Air Arms TX 200
– he was the ‘T’ in ‘TX’ – I expressed my
amazement at what he’d done, and, -JWJѣXFRFS\MTYWZQ^FUUWJHNFYJXJ[JW^FXUJHYTKYMJLZSXMJHTQQJHYX
typically, he dismissed my praise with, ‘It’s

HE'S A SHOOTER
Pete is also a skilled shooter, and his airguns
are not for exhibition only, that’s for sure. I
always study other shooters’ techniques, and
as I watched Pete go through the motions
with the slider, plus a glorious .25 calibre KT
break-barrel, and one of the Whiscombes
he’d brought along, it was obvious that I was
watching a man who really knew what he was
doing. Proper trigger technique, relaxed hold,
controlled breathing and correctly applied
follow-through; it was all there, along with the
pure satisfaction of hitting the target. Yes,
Polish Pete was definitely a full-on shooter, as
well as being an intensely dedicated
collector. He’s the right man for Ken’s rifle,
no doubt about it.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

When I unzipped the case containing the
slider, Pete just smiled and slowly shook his
head. He knew in that instant that he
needed to own, and shoot, that remarkable
rifle, and he said as much. By the time he’d
put a couple of pellets through it, Pete’s
mind was made up and he said, ‘Terry, I

Jim Tyler looks at the effects of altering
spring preload on the recoil cycle

ike most people, the only objective

L measurement of a springer’s
performance that I could take until just over
a decade ago was the muzzle velocity. I had
no idea of what effect any modification had
on the shot cycle, whether or not the recoil
cycle was improved in any way, nor why. I
could – and did – shoot the rifles, and try to
reconcile my perception of changes in the
recoil cycle with what I imagined might be
going on inside it, but truth be told, I did not
know whether any conclusions were real or
just imagined.
Lacking the knowledge, experience and
budget to even contemplate taking
measurements of the internals of the springer
during the shot cycle, the next best option was

accuracy you achieve with it.
My experiments suggest that effecting
small variations in muzzle energy by varying
spring preload does not come at the cost of
any undesirable side effects in the recoil
cycle, other than a slight change in recoil
acceleration that probably has little effect on
hold sensitivity.

I took a look at the Milbro Explorer, which
for a gun costing so little, certainly had a
great deal to offer. Now it would be quite in
order to leave things there, but I don’t want
to do that, because I know you’re itching to
see inside, if only to see if this gun’s appeal
is purely skin deep.
As I mentioned last month, I think this
gun may hold a few surprises and I like
pleasant surprises, so without further delay,
it’s time to get the screwdrivers out.

First step for me is to remove the rear sight, to
avoid damage later. Keep turning the elevation

then hinge the sight up. Inside will be the

which secure the base. These are quite small
and tight, so take some time to select the best
fitting bit before attempting release.
