2. PURPOSE
2.1 The Purpose of this document is to explain how the measurement of the Pin Thread Pullout is
performed using a TenarisHydril thread pullout gage.
3. PERSONS AFFECTED
3.1 This document is applicable to all:
3.1.1 All Tenaris Premium Connections Manufacturing Services Personnel.
3.1.2 Facilities licensed to thread TenarisHydril connections.
4. REFERENCES
4.1 Not Applicable.
5. DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS
5.1 Definitions and Abbreviations are defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0001.
6. RESPONSIBILITIES
6.1 Responsibilities are defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0002.
7. PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION
7.1 Personnel qualification is defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0003.
8. PROCEDURES
8.1 Inspection
8.1.1 Thread End (pullout), there are two styles of thread pullout found on Wedge products.
Theses styles are:
8.1.1.1 Normal thread ends, typical of upset pin ends, threading tool pullout shall start at
the last required full form thread depth position and occur in lead. This style of
thread pullout is typically obtained by radially retracting the threading insert away
from the part while remaining in lead.
8.1.1.1.2 Partial thread crest may occur both ahead of and within the thread end
region when the threads are machined into a diameter not coinciding
with the true thread crest.
8.1.1.1.3 Steps, mismatch, etc. are allowable on either thread flank in the pullout
zone only providing:

a) The threading insert has reached insert or is beyond the distance
specified on the licencee product drawingto the thread end.
b) No point along the resultant stabbing flank contacts an adjointing
seal, shoulder, or chamfer.
8.1.1.2 Runout into pipe body OD, typical of non-upset pin ends, this style of thread ends
is obtained by machining the root portion of the thread form in taper and lead to a
diameter equality to or larger than the pipe body OD; ie. “threading into air”. Partial
black threads will occur in this region.
8.1.2 Thread Pullout gage
8.1.2.1 A TenarisHydril proprietary thread pullout gage is used to establish the thread
pullout/end location. The thread pullout/end is defined as the point where the
threading insert pulls away from the thread root during the normal threading path.
8.1.2.2 Adjust all contact points on the thread pullout gage so they fit into the root of the
thread and the indicator contact point rides freely in the last thread thread groove.
Apply the gage to the pin with the indicator contact just over 90 degrees from the
last scratch. Thread the gage around towards the last scratch until there is a
change in the thread root depth as indicated by movement of the dial indicator.
Mark this location and measure the thread length from the stab flank till the face of
the pin, as specified on the Inspection Report.
8.1.2.3 Drawing Example: Thread Pullout
8.2 Acceptance / Rejection criteria
Thread Pull Out Inspection is acceptable if the measured values are within the limits prescribed
on the IR.
8.3 Records
The result of these inspections shall be recorded on the IR.
