Alyssa’s Project Prospectus

The majority of law enforcement’s job is spent writing up accident reports. However, this

isn’t something that people know about. Law enforcement officers have to file an accident report

for every call they receive, no matter how small. An accident report is a detailed list of

information that is filed to identify patterns and possible causes of issues. Possible issues could

include road conditions which will help them configure new ways to decrease these problematic

areas. An accident report is used to detail what occurs in the incident and obtain information

from the person(s) involved. An accident report is a file that holds all information of the people

involved. It typically includes first and last names, license plate numbers, seat belt use, weather

conditions, substance use, time of day, etc.

To create an accident report I will need to get the proper paperwork that is used and

create my case. Due to the confidentiality and time, accident reports have now been switched to

being online through the South Dakota Accident Reporting System (SDARS). Due to not having

access to the online system law enforcement uses today, I will be doing it on paper as they used

to. After I get the proper paperwork, I will begin to create my case. I will then slowly begin

filling out the paperwork properly. To plan for setbacks, I hope to have all of this configured and

have extra copies of the paperwork. I will have a written explanation of the accident that

occurred and the paperwork that law enforcement will send to SDARS.

There will be parts that I enjoy throughout the process of creating my accident report. On

the other hand, there will be problems I encounter. I am most excited to create my accident. I

believe that this will be something that I genuinely enjoy. I also know that this will help me see

more of the law enforcement career that many others don’t see and know about. However, I will

have to create fake names because of confidentiality. A setback I may encounter is obtaining the

proper paperwork for my accident report because it has switched over to the computer. To help

me overcome this, I will ask Deputy Poppen to assist me with any information I am not familiar

with. I will also take my time and occasional breaks to help myself relax.

There are many careful steps that I will need to consider throughout this process. I need

to keep in mind the confidentiality in the case I create. Using real names or real accidents could

end me up in a lot of trouble due to the policy they have created to ensure privacy. I will also

need to make sure that I have it detailed as I am writing out a case and that is a realistic case that

could occur in the area I choose. Creating a detailed accident will help me when I begin filling

out the accident report. I feel like I am very well prepared for this because of the time I spent

shadowing. I have seen what the accident reports look like and the amount of detail put into

them. I am very grateful for the information that Deputy Poppen has given me so that I succeed

in creating my senior product. I know that I can do this if I try my hardest and ask questions

when I encounter problems.
