Activity 6
Formative Assessment
1. Do oceans warm up and cool down? Why?
2. When ocean currents that bring cold water move towards a coastal region, the
temperature of that area decreases as warmer air from the land flows to the sea? What
will happen to the climate of that area?
3. When warm ocean currents that take along warm water go to a land mass, the
temperature of that place increases as warmer air above the water flows inland? What
will happen to the climate of that area?
4. What are the factors that cause ocean current?
5. Do ocean current make different climates in the different parts of the world?
REMEDIAL/ ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY
Temperature and Density-Driven Currents
KEY CONCEPTS
a. ice versus water density
b. ocean waters near the equator are heated by the sun's rays
c. surface (warm) and bottom (cold) water currents
Materials: · a tank, or wide-mouth glass jar · ink or food coloring · ground pepper · water · small
containers, or an ice cube tray, to freeze water in · prepared colored ice cubes
Objective: To demonstrate and observe the constant exchange of surface and bottom water
currents as related to density.
Method: Fill the tank one-half full with warm fresh water. Sprinkle pepper grains into the water.
These will settle to the bottom. Place a colored ice cube in the water.
Guide Questions:
1. Where does the melting ice water go?
2. If the pepper grains represent material on the ocean bottom, what happens to them?
3. What happens to the cold water as it warms up?

Activity 7 CLIMATE CHANGE
Discussing new concept no.2 (Picture Analysis)
Divide the class into 4 groups. Choose one picture per group. Brain storm about your reaction in
the picture, solicit ideas as many as you can about the prior knowledge you have in the
worldwide issues of climate change.
Guide Questions in Picture analysis
1. Describe the picture. What was happening to the world now a days? Infer what will
happen 10 years after.
2. Are this picture related to climate change? If yes, in what ways? If no, then why?
3. What are human activities that hasten (driven to its fullest) climate change?
4. How are these activities effect mankind and its environment?

Activity 8
Test the effect of a greenhouse on temperature
Materials needed:
Plastic bottle
Nail
2 thermometers
Notebook
Pencil
Procedure
Part 1: Making a greenhouse
1. Make a hole near the top of the plastic bottle with the nail.
2. Insert the first thermometer into the hole.
Part 2: Recording data
1. Place the second thermometer next to the bottle.
2. Make sure that the same amount of sunlight reaches both thermometers.
3. After 10 minutes, note temperature values from both thermometers.
4. Record the data in the notebook.
5. Take the temperature records again after another 10 minutes.
6. Repeat a few times.
Part 3: Analyzing results
Guide Questions
Do both thermometers record the same temperature?
If no, which one is higher?
Can you explain why these two temperature records are not the same?

What is the Ozone Layer? The ozone layer is a layer of concentrated ozone gas about 24km up
in the atmosphere. Like a good pair of sunglasses, it protects us from the sun’s harmful ultra-
violet rays. This very important layer is being destroyed by CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), which are
used in industry and everyday life (e.g. aerosol cans). The chlorine in these compounds can cause
ozone destruction. The hole in the ozone leaves humans and wildlife open to unsafe levels of UV
light.
What is the Greenhouse Effect?
Certain gases in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor trap energy
from the sun. The natural greenhouse gases act like a big blanket around the earth, keeping it
warm. Humans can create extra greenhouse gases but this means that more heat gets trapped.
This causes the temperature of the earth to rise, which results in Global Warming. Global Warming
is the recorded increase in the average temperatures of the earth’s atmosphere and oceans.
Global Warming affects the weather patterns on Earth and causes Climate Change. Climate
change results in higher sea levels, more rainfall and severe droughts and floods. What effect
does climate change have on humans and animals? A greenhouse is a small house made of
glass that is used to grow plants. A greenhouse traps the sun's rays and keeps the heat from
escaping. It is warm inside. In the same way that the glass traps heat in a greenhouse, the
atmosphere traps heat next to the earth.
Guide Questions
1. Describe the ozone layer
2. What are the chemical pollutants that destroy the ozone layer?
3. Is the ozone layer important? Why?
4. What are the gases that make up the greenhouse?
5. What is the effect of greenhouse in the earth?

Short quiz
1. In which bottle do the thermometer reading higher in Bottle A with thermometer inside or
in bottle B with thermometer on the side?
2. The ozone layer is the part of the atmosphere that traps the harmful ultraviolet rays, true
or false?
3. What will happen to the earth if humans continue to create extra greenhouse gases?
4. Are greenhouse effects contributing high in global warming? Why?
5. A greenhouse traps the sun ray’s and keeps the heat from escaping thus leading to a
colder temperature inside (true or false)

What You and Your Community Can Do to Reduce Carbon Dioxide?
Purpose: This activity will allow you to think about what you can do to help reduce the release of
carbon dioxide into the air and perhaps limit future climate change.
Time required: 40 minutes
Equipment:
Ball pen and paper
1. Find three other students with whom you would like to work. You will need pencils and paper,
and you might want to have these things with you: The “Frequently Asked Questions about
Global Warming and Climate
2. Take the next 20 minutes to discuss the following:
A. The four of you work for your town’s Department of Environmental Protection. You have learned
a great deal about climate change in the past several months, and you are becoming concerned
about the possible effects it will have on your local community if it continues to get worse. You
are now aware of some of the causes and effects of climate change, and you would like to do
everything you can to make sure that your community does not contribute more carbon dioxide
than is absolutely necessary. However, you also realize that people in your community enjoy the
way their lives are now, and you do not want to make too many changes that will upset their lives.
Your department has been asked to come up with some new programs for reducing the amount
of carbon dioxide generated by your community. What three programs would you propose to
encourage your community’s citizens, businesses, and institutions (such as schools) to change
their behavior so they produce less carbon dioxide?
