Chapter one

1.1 BACK GROUND OF THE STUDY

The history of performance appraised is quite brief. It roots in the early 20 th century

traced to Taylors pioneering time and motion studies. As a destines and formal

management procedure used in evaluation of work performance really dated from

the time of second world war not more than 60 years ago. Performances appraised

have been increasingly implemented by most modern organization as tools for

employee assessment (Mondy1998p335).

According to (Mondy1998 p336) several reasons that formal performance

evaluation is to stay in the organization. Accordingly formal evaluation is required

to justify wide range of human resource decision such as pay raises, promotion,

demotion, and termination…

It also required determining employees training need the author sited study on high

performance practice organization that practice of performance appraisal was cited

asone of top vehicles for creative advantage. More over performance measurement

allows organization to tell employee something about their competences and their

potential.

The use fullness of performance evaluation as managerial decision tools depend

party on whether or not performance appraisal system able to provide accurate data

on employee performance and hence rating accurately is critical of getting accurate

appraisal employee job behavior is most often attributed to fault in rating formant

used deficiencies in appraisal content rather resistance to judge other and the

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In most organization employees are complaining of who evaluates their

performance appraisal standard the interpretation of performance evaluation result

and time of evaluations. The study has been further access and identified the major

and serious problem of performance appraisal and its impact employee morale and

satisfactory

This was main reasons that initiate me to conduct this study; the performance

appraisal and it impact on the performance of the employees. Hence the study was

conducted on the current performance appraisal methods and practices at wukro

hospital and it was gave an idea about the employees’ satisfaction level towards the

appraisal at Wukro hospital.

1.3 Research question

Based on data that will collect from wukro hospital, it was tried to analyze the

performance appraisal practice and its impact o employee morale & job

satisfaction on hospital.

Thus the researcher was tried toanswer the following.

 What are the performance appraisal systems in the hospital?

 To what extent do employees receive the feedback on the result of

performance evaluation?

 What are the impacts of performance on the employees’ job satisfaction?

 What are the strength and weakness of the performance appraisal in the

hospital?

1.4 Objectives of the study

1.4.1 General objective

The general objective this study was assessing what performance appraisal look

like, how it is applied and its impact on employee morale and job satisfaction in

Wukro hospital.

1.4.2 Specific objective

 To assess the distinct purpose of performance appraisal in the wukro

hospital.

 To study the impact of performance method on employees morale and job

satisfaction in the health center.

 To summarize, conclude and recommended alternative way to the problem

of performance appraisal process of Wukro hospital.

1.5 Significance of the study

This study enables to know about the role of performance appraisal, understand

why the organization likes to appraise their employee. In addition to this the study

help to understand whether evaluates standard or criteria are valid or not as

compared to employee performance. In appropriate performance appraisal may

lead the organization into devious problem because these evaluations may create

moral discrimination on the employees those who have good performance quality

and therefore this study give important case about the performance appraiser and

its impact. It has its own significance for Wukro hospital and to the researcher.

1.6. Scope and limitation of the study

1.6.1 Scope of the study


The scope of the study was limited to Wukro hospital center which is located on

the central part of Wukro town. The researcher will try to look what performance

appraisal and its impact on the morale and job satisfaction of the employee.

1.5.2 Limitation of the study

There are problems faces in the study; there are external (uncontrollable) variables

that the smooth implementation of the research. The lack of cooperation of the

respondents and their commitment to complete filling the questionnaires,

constraints related with time, budget and availability of sufficient data. There was a

difficulty in gathering secondary data due to shortage of material like annual

report, previously done researcher related topics; but the researcher was supposed

to use other alternatives like internet.

1.7 Research Methodology and Approach of the study

1.7. 1 Data type and source

To conduct this study there researcher will used secondary and primary data. The

strength of primary data gives grater details, more accurate information of

respondents. And the strength of secondary data is for more economical as the cost

of collecting and saving much of time.

1.7.2 Sample size and Sampling technique

Since it is difficult to collection of information from whole population the

researcher will use sampling particularly random sampling for data analysis

To conduct primary data the researcher will use questionnaire because it is easy to

fill or selects one of the structured answers for questions. The questionnaire

includes both structured open ended questions and closed ended questions. More

over interview has been used in the gathering tools to assess how the performance

appraisal system conducts and what it may follows on the employee morale. To

collect secondary data the researcher will use written documents about the

organization performance evaluation reports and other additional written materials

related to the company.

1.7.4 Data analysis

After the data will be collected through different data gathering tools mentioned

above the analysis part of the raw data will be edited and checked for errors and

omissions. Then the edited data will be analyzed.

The study will use statistical tools such average and percentage to analyze and

interpret the data. And the data are present in the table forms.

1.8. Organization of the paper

The study paper consists of four chapters, chapter one introduction, chapter two

review of literature, chapter three data analysis and interpretation and chapter four

the conclusion and recommendation.
