2 (a) Write about how God describes Himself so humans can know Him using: [10]

(i) Sura 2.255 (Ayat al-Kursi) (ii) Sura 114 (Ikhlas).

(i) Sura 2.255 (Ayat al-Kursi):

These two passages in the syllabus tell us teachings of the Holy Quran about Allah in
himself to help humans comprehend His infinite attributes and nature. The language
and descriptions employed in these verses aim to make aspects of God's nature
understandable and relatable to humans.
It is acknowledged that God is far beyond human comprehension. The Sura 2, Ayat
255, also known as Ayat al-Kursi (The Throne Verse) begins with the assertion that
“Allah! there is no deity except Him – the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of
existence”. The title "Ever-Living" signifies His eternal existence, transcending the
limitations of time. As the "Sustainer of existence," God is not only the Creator but
also the One who continuously maintains and supports all that exists. The verse
continues by describing God as “neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep”.
This negation of human vulnerabilities highlights God's tireless vigilance and
unwavering awareness. While humans experience fatigue and the need for rest, God
never becomes unaware or negligent in His duties. He is quite different from his
creation and his authority is unique because nobody can intercede in his presence
without his permission. His knowledge is complete , absolute , perfect as He is
aware of the hidden and the manifest , the present as well as the past which is
beyond our perception. He also knows what shall be in the future and none of his
creation including our angels and prophets can be equal in knowledge to him.The
latter part of Ayat al-Kursi states that His throne extends over the heavens and the
earth, and preserving them does not burden Him which symbolises God's supreme
authority and control over the entire universe. The mention of God's throne also
underscores His majestic and elevated status.Ultimately, Ayat al-Kursi serves as a
powerful reminder of God's unparalleled attributes.
(ii) Sura 114 (Ikhlas):
Sura 114, also known as Sura Tawhid, focuses on monotheism by telling us about
tawheed in personality and tawheed in attributes. In the beginning of the Surah , the
use of "Ahad'' exclusively for God emphasises His Oneness. "Samad," considered to
be one of God's perfect attributes, encompasses various qualities such as being The
Eternal Refuge, The Self-Sufficient, The Absolute, and the One on Whom all depend.
While all of creation needs Him, He is in need of no one.The verse emphasises that
God was not born nor did He give birth, emphasising His dissimilarity to creation
through relatable attributes. The assertion that “And there is none like Him”
reinforces the idea that there is nothing in the heavens or earth like Him. Through
these verses, God provides a clear and concise understanding of His divine nature,
inviting believers to acknowledge and worship Him in His absolute and unparalleled
reality.
