Discussion
There are factors that influence why some people misuse and
abuse medicines. As a young adolescent, it is important to become aware
of the dangers posed by the improper use of medicines

The following are some of the potential dangers associated with medicine
misuse and abuse:
1. Physical harm
a. Deafness-Some people have hearing loss after taking in certain
medicines at a regular basis
Example of ototoxic medicines:
 Aspirins (in large amount)
 Anti-Inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen
 some antibiotics, some diuretics for high blood pressure, and some
medicine for cancer patients.
b. Increased diarrhea- there are various strains of bacteria inside the
intestines, and one of them is called gut flora or helpful bacteria. The
improper use of antibiotics can remove many of these good bacteria.

c. Low birth weight or birth defects- when a pregnant woman takes

illegal or nonprescription medicine during her pregnancy, the like-hood
that the unborn child will have side effects Increases exponentially.

d. Organ failure - if a person is dependent on some medicines or illegal

drugs for a long time, he or she becomes vulnerable to heart, kidney, lung.
or liver failure.
2. Psychological harm
a. Depression-when an individual becomes dependent on a drug, he or she
develops a tolerance for it. As this tolerance develops, the need to take in

more of that drug increases. If the addicted person is not able to take in
the needed amount of the drug, he or she will become depressed: this a
cycle of drug dependency or addiction.

Application
Direction: Form a group into four, each group will role play the following
types of medicine misuse and abuse.
The group 1 will role play the self-medication.
The group 2 will role play improper use
