Introduction
Some of the most relevant areas in our lives are our passions, likes, and interests. That is why it is
crucial to know how to express your ideas clearly in a foreign language. In this first unit, you will learn
how to express your interests and likes with different examples. Starting with some basic concepts
that will go deeper in the next stages of the unit.
Topics like the present simple, talking about your daily routines. Also, the use of some verbs which
help you express these ideas and concepts.

How could you ask an interchange student at your university about his/her likes and interests and
how could you express it to start a small talk?
1. Talking about likes and interests
To express your likes and interests, there are different options. You can use verbs such as like. Let's
see some examples with questions and answers:
Here is an example of a question with a complete answer:

Do you like rap music? Yes, I like rap music No, I don’t like rap music.
Does he like Chinese food? Yes, he likes Chinese food No, he does not Chinese
food
Here is an example of a question with a short answer:

Also, you can express your interests by using the questions like:

Those are basic but significant ways to ask for and answer questions about your likes and interests.

3. Expressing likes and dislikes
Well, you already know how to use the verb "like" and how to make sentences with it. Let's
remember that for using these verbs you need to use the auxiliary "do" or "does" and the verb "to
be" accordingly. In the next examples, you will see some examples in negative form. That means
the auxiliaries are going to be in their contracted form such as: (doesn’t, don’t, isn’t, can’t) If you
have some doubts about the use, do not forget to check the first lesson.
Now let's see which other verbs you can use to express likes and interests:
To express likes:
• I like the English class.
• I love my new car.
• I adore the school.
• I‘m crazy about the new gym.
• I’m mad about smartphones.

To express dislikes:
• I don’t like tomatoes.
• I dislike salsa music.
• I can’t bear romantic music.
• I hate horror movies.
• I can’t stand Chinese food.
• I detest the new amusement park.
As you can see, some expressions are using the modal verb "can" which you are going to study
further in the course.
4. Talking about your daily routine
In order to talk about your daily routine, you need to use the Present Simple. This tense is used
to express the things you do regularly, habits, repetitive actions, general facts, or daily routines.
The present simple uses the auxiliary Do and Does for its negative and interrogative sentences.
It is important to notice that the auxiliary is not used in affirmative sentences.
Let's see some examples:
Affirmative I like the rock music
Negative I do not/ don’t like the rock music
Yes/no question Do you like the rock music?
Wh question Why does he like the rock music?
It is essential to recognize the auxiliaries and how to use them. Each of the auxiliaries has specific
personal pronouns to use. Let's see that in the next chart:

Habits: something that you do often and regularly, sometimes without knowing that you are doing
it
Know: to have information in your mind
Profession: any type of work that needs special training or a particular skill, often one that
is respected because it involves a high level of education
Possession: the fact that you have or own something
Job: the regular work that a person does to earn money
Someday: at some time in the future that is not yet known or not stated
