Convenor’s Note

t is a well-known fact that there is abundance of quality

translators - interpreters or language professionals (both for Indian
and foreign languages) in India. Over the years, there has been a
desire to bring these quality language associates to a common
platform. The reason is quite obvious. After the phenomenal success
of BPO, Software Development, etc. the huge reservoir of
technically qualified linguistic professionals, viz. translators,
interpreters, phonetic experts, etc. in India is attracting global
attention.
Indian Translators Meet 2005, New Delhi, 17th Sept, 2005
evoked a keen interest and the presence of language associates
from different parts of India. That this meet was well represented
by representatives of country’s premier language service providers,
senior government officials, leading language faculties from top
notch Universities, delegates from MNCs and established emerging
freelance translators / interpreters.
The day started with thought provoking speech by our chief guest
Mr. R. Viswanathan, a veteran of several years’ service at the

Ministry of External Affairs, followed by Microsoft India (the

Principal Sponsor) presenting its premier productivity programs
suite, Microsoft Office 2003, fully configured in Indian languages,
as a toolkit to facilitate the work requirements of the modern
translators. Adequate emphasis was given for the future of Indian
languages and the services extended in Indian languages by the
translation industry.
In addition, several interesting papers were presented during the
meet that covered various issues related to quality control in the
field of translation services, existing tax structure applicable to
the industry, payment related issues, identity crisis faced by Indian
language professionals today etc.
A draft proposal stating the possibility of the formation of Indian
Translators Association was also presented and was well received
by delegates who even discussed issues involving types of
membership, the events to be held and the objectives of such a
body, along with the means to be adopted to reach out to the
people more effectively.
On behalf the Organizing Committee, I express sincere thanks to
our Chief Guest Mr. R. Viswanathan, Principal Sponsor -
Microsoft India, presenters and all the participants for having
made this event a grand success, and at the same time it gives me
immense pleasure in celebrating success by fully achieving the
objectives that were set.
Publication of this directory is another step towards uniting
Translators and Language Professionals of India, and that this
will serve as ready reference guide for companies looking for hiring
reliable and quality conscious translators supported by a vibrant
forum that will continue to grow and strengthen itself with the
guidance and support of fellow members, government officials
and corporate bodies.

FOREWORD

6 he Indian Translators Meet held in September 2005 has

proved to be an important event in creating a platform for
laying foundations of a translation industry in India. This
meet was well attended by more than 130 representatives of
country’s premier translation service providers, corporate
bodies, state officials and freelancers who discussed and
explored all possible avenues to ensuring a healthy growth of
the India- based translation sectors.

However, this profession as an industry is nascent, and

accordingly there are many issues and areas that need to be
taken into consideration for its healthy growth.

A large component of the industry functions in an

unorganized, unaffiliated nature. This leads to a crisis in terms
of regularization and definition of the industry they constitute.
The unregulated translation industry also is prone to a vast
variety of financial problems with respect to the price of
services offered.

Another issue of profound significance is the future of Indian

languages and the services extended in Indian languages by the
translation industry. It is of prime importance of any such
venture to focus attention on home grounds first. The
protocols and vision necessary for the propagation of Indian-
language services is to develop the local market potential to
the fullest - financially, a necessity and, socially, a target of
maximum relevance.

The basis of the foundations of an industry is in the harnessing

of the relevant technologies to maximize efficiencies. There is
a greater need to constantly upgrade translation skills and to
adapt ever-changing technology and translation tools.

I strongly believe that the publication of Translators Directory

is another step towards organizing Indian translators. At the
same time, this directory will help Indian exporters in reaching
quality database of Indian Translators.

Joint Secretary

Brief Profile
MR. R. VISWANATHAN is Joint Secretary dealing
with Latin America and Caribbean in the Ministry of
External Affairs, since 17 september 2004. He was
in charge of promotion of Investment and Trade
from September 2003. He was Ambassador to
Venezuela from 2000 to 2003. He was the Consul
General in Sao Paulo, Brazil for four years. He set
up the Consulate for the first time. Before Brazil,
he worked in the Indian mission to the United
Nations in New York. His other postings were Port
Louis, Tripoli, Karachi and Lisbon. During his stint
in Delhi in 1990-92, he was Director of West Europe
Division in the Ministry of External Affairs. Mr
Viswanathan is a Latin America expert. His focus
is promotion of economic and commercial relations
between India and this region.

Brief Profile
MS. GITA MADHU, attended the first year of M.A in French
Literature at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. She holds
a Masters in Sociology from the Annamalai University as
well as a Degree in the Sciences. She has been a
freelance translator for more than twenty years now,

Communication India, on a UNESCO funded project.
