HISTORY
Evening wear is based on court attire. For women, the evening dress has its
origins in the 15th century, with the rise of the Burgundian court and its fashion,
which was very important to Philip the Good. Evening dresses were reserved for
ladies of the court, and initially made of wool, woven in various ways, and
embellished with a train for formal occasions. These complex fabrics were very
expensive and therefore used by the nobility as a differentiator of social rank
and as a marker of their condition. The Renaissance then gradually modified the
system of social rank, and allowed rich patricians and bourgeoisie to display
their success. The art of silk weaving was established around the Mediterranean
around 1400, and quickly became fashionable for those who could afford it.
Dresses for court balls and other festivities were then generally made of silk and
trimmed with furs, again as an indicator of social rank.
DESCRIPTION OF AN EVENING DRESS
An evening dress is a long, flowing dress normally worn for formal events.
Evening dresses are usually made of luxurious fabrics like chiffon, velvet, satin,
etc. Silk is also very popular for evening dresses. We sometimes distinguish the
ball gown, always comprising a skirt and a fitted bodice, from the evening dress,
which can have any silhouette: sheath, mermaid or trumpet, and can be wide or
fitted.
THE SILHOUETTE OF THE EVENING DRESS
The silhouette of the evening dress is an important element to consider when
trying to describe an evening dress. The silhouette can make or break the dress,
so it's important to choose it wisely. The ideal silhouette depends on your body
shape.
THE COLOR OF THE EVENING DRESS
The color of the evening dress can be decisive in creating the desired
atmosphere. It must be in harmony with the location of the evening, the theme if
there is one, and of course with your personality! If you want to attract attention,
choose a colorful evening dress that is out of the ordinary. Red dresses are
always elegant and glamorous, just like black dresses. For a more chic evening,
prefer pastel or nude tones.
THE MATERIAL OF THE EVENING DRESS
The evening dress can be made in a variety of materials, including silk, satin,
lace and tulle. It can be decorated with pearls, sequins and embroidery. Evening
dresses can be purchased in fashion boutiques or made to measure by a designer.
THE QUALITY OF THE EVENING DRESS
The quality of an evening dress is very important. You want your evening dress
to last a long time and be able to wear it several times. The quality of the
evening dress depends on several factors, including the fabric, cut and finishing.
Fabric is one of the most important factors to consider when shopping for an
evening dress. You want a fabric that will last a long time and won't lose its
shape after a few washes. Some fabrics, like polyester, are more durable than
others. Silk is also a good choice, but it is more fragile than polyester. If you opt
for a silk dress, you may need to have it professionally cleaned.
