                               IMPACT OF JET TEST RIG
AIM:
 To verify the momentum theorem, experimentally.
Specification:
   Structure: A Transparent clear box of dimension 400 mm x 400 x400 mm
   Storage tank: 700 mm x700 mm x500 mm
   Measuring tank: 400 mm x260 mm x 380 mm
   Nozzle : 8 mm diameter
   Dead weight to measure the force
   Plates: Flat plate, curved plate, angle plate (30⁰,60⁰).with chrome plating
   Necessary piping and fittings.
THEORY
A jet is a stream issuing from an orifice, nozzle or tube. It is not enclosed by solid boundary walls but is
surrounded by a fluid whose velocity is less than its own. The two fluids may be different or they may
be of the same kind.
From conservation of linear momentum, we know that if a jet of fluid striking an object, will exerts a
force on that object. Theoretically, the force can be estimated from conservation of linear momentum
in integral form (to get an average value) or in differential form (i.e. Euler’s equation or Navier Stokes
equation).
Experimentally, the force can be determined if we connect the object to a spring balance or scale.
For this experiment,

written in Y and Z direction.
By Newton’s third law of motion, an equal and opposite force is supplied by the fluid on the body
which bring the change in momentum.
Since the jet of the fluid turns by right angle when striking a flat plate, the final velocity V 2 will be zero.

EXPERIMENTAL SETUP
The setup mainly consists of a nozzle of about 10 mm in diameter fitted to a pipe of 50mm diameter.
The jet of water issuing from nozzle strikes a flat plate of about 100mm diameter placed at some
distance to the nozzle. A force acts on the plate and by which the lever moves on the side. A weight W
is placed on the pan P to contract the momentum caused by the force F on the lever. The lever arm

     again comes to its original position. Thus, the force F acted by the jet on the flat plate equal the
     weight W.
     The discharge, which falls in the tank after striking the flat plate is used to measure the discharge by
     volumetric method.
     PROCEDURE
1.          Switch on the Power & Start the Motor
2.        Mark the position of vertical lever and horizontal arm when there is no weight on the pan.
3.        Open the inlet valve so that jet of water strikes the flat plate at its centre. The lever is
   deflected to one side.
4.        Put a weight W on the pan so as to bring the lever in its original position as marked in Step 1.
5.        Measure the discharge Q by volumetric method.
6.          Repeat step 2 and 4 for various other discharges.
     CLOSING PROCEDURE:
     1.     When experiment is over, switch OFF pump first.
     2.     Switch OFF power supply to panel.
     PRECAUTIONS & MAINTTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
 1. Do not run the pump at low voltage i.e. less than 180 volts.
 2. Never fully close the delivery line and by-pass line valves simultaneously.
 3. Always keep apparatus free from dust
 4. To prevent clogging of moving part, run pump at least once in a fortnight.
 5. Frequently grease/oil the rotating parts, once in three months
 6. Always use clean water
 7. If apparatus will not in use for more than one month, drain the apparatus completely, and fill pump
   with cutting oil.
