Today I am going to represent about the word of athletics.
In the next few minutes you are
going to gain insight in this sport, which is often called ”the queen of the sports”. I have
brung some informations about what athletics summarizes, about the coming word
champonship (which is going to take place in Budapest) ,about how young athletes train and
race, and also about how you can do this sport without being professional.
The first time that this sport has showed up was in the first ancient olympic games, which
was held in before Christ 776. After the rise of christianity and the downfall of the Roman
Empire Olympic Games disappeared for a while. The next time when athletics appeared was
in the 19th century.
Athletics includes running, jumping, throwing and walking. These activites are the basics to
all sports. So based on these, we can say athletics has a big effect on everything in the word
of sports.
We differentiate indoor and outdoor season in athletics. The speciality of the indoor season
is the elevated and shorter track, plus there are less events. The outdoor season is what we
have got use to, basically a 400m track, with long jump pits, high jump and pole vault mats,
and throwing circles.
In this sport we treat both men and women equally. There are equal (concretely 23-23)
events for both genders.
This is an invidiual sport as many of you have already heard. The only exceptions are the
relays, but the athletes are also running alone there.
Running in athletics includes so many different distance, and type of event.
We use to separate flat running events and hurdle/steeplechase events.
The most famous part of running is sprinting, of course. It’s distance range is between 60m-
400m (indoor: 60m, 400m; outdoor: 100m, 200m, 400m). The special device here is the
blocks, where the athletes begin their race. In this point it’s really important to have a great
explosiveness, to have fast start. What the audience can see here is humans who put their
whole power into their runs. They usually don’t follow any plans, because their distance is
too short to make plan for a race. So that is why they have to train their strength, agility and
endurance (endurance has an important role in the 400m) to hold their max speed as long as
they can. They often have strong, muscular body, and in a lot of cases they are kinda short,
but it’s not a criterium to be a star athlete. (for example Usain Bolt is 1,95 meters tall)
The next part is the middle-distance, which is includes distances between 800m-3000m. The
athlete who chooses this have to be good at pacing. When the gun goes the field picks up a
fast pace, and they usually finish their race with that same speed. If somebody wants to be a
great at this type of running, they must have an excellent speed endurance. The common
body-type here is kinda skinny, but not as skinny as in the long distance. Middle-distance
runners often do endurance trainings, but they also use to do a few gym workouts, so
basically they mix sprinter’s and distance runner’s training programs
We arrived the last dash running event, which is the long-distance running. The elite
sprinters here is often kenyan or ethiopian, but there will be always some exceptions. You
can recognize this kind of runner by their height (which is use to be short), and their lean
body-type. They usually have an excellent strategy for their main race, and they can control
their pace perfectly. We can find here some sections: there are runners who race on the
track, and those who run on the streets, or on a field.
More wealthy athletes use to go to training camps on mountains, because of the more rare
air.
Last but not least, I am going to take a few words for the hurdles/ steeplechase events. These
are one of the most special events in athletics.
Hurdles occur in the 60m, 100m/110m and 400m. We distinguishes the two genders here.
Women have a much shorter hurdle height, and in the outdoor season they just run 100m
counter to men, who have to run 110 metres, if they wanna race in the hurdles event. We
have talked about the sprinters, but the next one is the steeplechase. The only event there is
the 3000m steeplechase. This event mixes water jumps and hurdling into one race. This
event needs a lot of focus and technique from the athlete, because mainly the water jumps
can be tricky sometimes. The athletes need to be flexible and they must have an excellent
endurance level.
We separate 4 type of jumps: long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault.
In the long- and the triple jump athletes have their own lane, where they can accomplish
their jump. The main rule here is attached to the jumping board – if they step over the line,
their jump is going to be cancelled. Long jump consists of a run and a jumping part, but the
triple jump is way more complicated than this. When the athlete arrives to the board they
still have 2 more steps and a jump after those. Long jumpers and sprinters have a lot of in
common. They both need to be fast, and it’s not a bad thing, if they have a fast
explosiveness. And also we can notice that they have a similar bodytype, which is big,
muscular, powerful.
The last two jumping forms go towards the sky – high jump and pole vault are coming. These
two activities are one of the most complicated exercises, that we can see in athletics. I will
begin with the high jump. The whole movement starts with a slow, bouncy running towards
to the bar, and when the athlete finally reaches it, he jumps over it with a jump called ”flop”.
Flop requires a strong mind – firstly the athlete jumps up, then they bend their backs while
they are jumping backwards. It might sounds crazy, but actually it looks amazing and
incredible. Pole vault is also at least this hard, if it’s not harder. Every athlete hold a crossbar.
It’s their equipment for the jump. They run towards the height, and when they get really
close to it, they put down the crossbar and they pull themselves up, and in the end they turn
around in the air. It’s like a superhuman performance. Their dominant attribution is their
crazy flexibility. Actually it has come from gymnastics, where the flexibility is a big factor
about being succesful.
There are 4 types of throwing in athletics – shot put, javelin, hammer throw and discus. They
all need several form of movement, so we can say that some of them are a bit complicated
for beginners. Athletes that compete in shot put, hammer throw and discus throw use the
throwing circle. The exceptions are the javelin throwers, who have a separate runway for
their throws. For all of them dynamism is one of the biggest factor of the throw. They use to
train with hurdle jumps, special throws to earn this goal. In shot put the athlete puts the ball
on his shoulder, and then he just throws it as long as they can. In the shot put there is an
extra technique, when the athlete rotates before the throw. We can see rotating throwing
technique in the discus throw and in the hammer throw as well. Javelin throw is a bit
different in this point of view again. They run straight with their javelin in their hand, and
when the line is approaching they switch to side running, then they throw their javelin.
We can say, that all kind of throwers have a bigger, and muscular body than any other
athletes in athletics. All for the purpose to throw the longest distance.
Many of you might have heard that Hungary is going to hold the next Word Athletics
Championship in 2023. It is going to take place in Budapest 19th-27th of August. Here we can
see all those fantastic athletes who have already win a word championship or have been
having a word record. The stadium is still in under construction, but it is almost finished. It is
going to have 35 000 seats, and it is going to be Hungary’s biggest sport event that has been
ever held. 2000 athletes are going to arrive from 200 countries to compete.
Hobby sport plays a big role of the average peoples lives. One of the most popular form of
movement is jogging. It relaxes the mind and the soul, while you move your body. Also
running often gives you motivation, and balance in your life, which can never be enough.
Choose this hobby, if you want to be healthy, you wanna lose some weight, or you just
wanna spend some time in nature. If you begin this yourney, you must know that in the
beginning you won’t experience results. You must start with a slow tempo, and run like this
until you feel more confident. The location can be a nice path next to a river, or a busy road
in the downtown, or around your home. The main thing is to enjoy running as the way you
love it.
