EXERCISES FROM THE LAST TUTORIAL

1. READ THIS DIARY EXTRact.

This is a basic diary format. However, this is not a particularly
interesting diary entry.

I assume that you read that diary entry. I will get you to try a diary entry
again this week.

2 Find 10 synonyms for ‘hard’ and put them into complex sentences.
Not done.

Two Main Homework Texts

1. This stimulus below was given in an exam. They asked the students to
write a newspaper article. We will discuss how to go about it. I will get
you to do this for homework also. It’s a bit difficult to read. We will chat
about how to approach this. Time – 30 mins. Actually don’t worry about
timing this one because you have not done this kind of text before.

Write a newspaper article.

A newspaper report will often include:

 a catchy headline that uses a pun, rhyme, or alliteration;

 a subtitle which gives a bit more information about what the report is about;
 the reporter's name;
 Where, what, who, what time, when etc. how… up front.
 third-person and past tense;
 formal language;
 rhetorical questions;
 an introductory paragraph describing the story.

Not done. Okay. I will give you this one for homework again this week.

2. Also, see if you can do this. Write this letter to the editor.
Write a persuasive letter. Set the timer and open the box below to
see the stimulus:

The Town’s water supply has become undrinkable.

Address

Date

Dear Editor,

(begin with something respectful…)

Normally a pipe would be clean and as luxurious and desirably neat as possible,
but would you, kind Ssir, drink from a pipe where moss is around it visibly , not
only in the inside but also on the outside. Innocent people have been drinking
from the tap or as people nowadays call it the bubbler. The next day they feel
unwell and have to rush themselves to the hospital to discover that they have
been poisoned by WATER.

You are the only one who can take action to help save your townspeople. Isn’t it
atrocious when no one even decides to take responsibility of for * because they
have a clean water source at home. Even if the home water is polluted by any
animal carcasses people buy bottled water. (off track) Instead of our
townspeople taking time to solve the problem, they are taking even more time
to just figure out how they could go to the store and get water.

In conclusion, we need to do something now or never. (request the editor

respectfully to include something… in the newspaper).

With concerns,
Vidhat Nanduri

You are definitely on the right track; however, you have to remember that this is
a letter to an editor of a newspaper. So there are some things missing from the
letter. We will talk about that.

Paper test

Exercises for this Tutorial

1. Find 10 synonyms for ‘hard’ and put them into complex sentences.

Main Homework Text for this Tutorial

a)
I’ll give you this one again because I’d really like to see you attempt a newspaper
report. Try this one again.
Include:
 catchy headline to get reader’s attention. Interesting adjectives,
alliteration, pun etc.
 byline with author’s name, job, and the date.
 short opening paragraph. All important details should be there. Who,
what, where, why, when, how. What happened?
 use third person, past tense throughout.
 more detailed information in the body of the text – several paragraphs
with most important information first.
 Include some quotes from people.
 End with a quote to sum up the story.

b) Write a diary entry based on the stimulus below. Write this in 30

minutes.
 The diary should be personal, emotional, honest.
 It should be in first person.
 It can begin in present tense.
 You might then want to change to past tense to say what happened.
 Make the content interesting. Don’t just talk about mundane things that
happened. Choose something interesting/fun/scary to engage the reader.

See you this afternoon.

Chaos at the beach

Alliteration /pun in your title.

Jacob Masters, reporter for name of journal, 3/4/23

On March the 25th a big cargo container was found in the ocean when a
family of 3 were scuba diving. They found a lot of plastic which they thought
that someone was doing illegal activity by dumping plastic in the ocean. All
important info is up front. (who, why, where, how etc…)

From this point, look carefully at the text that has been given to you and try to
use your imagination to expand on the details. Recount the details of what
happened.

e.g. Police got involved.

QUOTE from the police.
QUOTE from other people who were there and saw the event.

You can then add a little bit of a comment about pollution if you like, but that
should definitely not be the main content of the report.

Plastic on the beach is normal but a sea full of plastic isn’t. As police have
reported to the WHO that there was 100 tones of plastic. Never in hHistory
has this much plastic ever been found. Every year we produce around 10
tones of plastic that is part of landfill. The other 50 tones is in the ocean!

Not only does it impact our environment, it pollutes it. On March the 25th a big
cargo container was found in the ocean when a family of 3 were scuba
diving. They found a lot of plastic which they thought that someone was doing
illegal activity by dumping plastic in the ocean. Every year the cases reported
due to plastic has been rising higher than ever.

The death of endangered species have rosen too and many scientists
suspect there is a link between plastic and animals. Most of the fish have
been feeded with plastic due to the plastic littered around the ocean. Plastic
can be littered by the people who drive boats, or the passengers in it.

In conclusion the plastic not only pollutes the ocean it ruins living
beings so we must do what we can to stop it.
This is not the correct style for a newspaper report.

See if you can try this one again…

Please let me know if you cannot come on Monday. Thanks.
