Giles: "This world is older than any of you know. Contrary to popular mythology, it did not
begin as a paradise. For untold eons demons walked the Earth. They made it their home,
their... their Hell. But in time they lost their purchase on this reality. The way was made for
mortal animals, for, for man. All that remains of the old ones are vestiges, certain magics,
certain creatures...

In Venice, Italy, Angela Martignetti is the Slayer. Peter Toscano is her first Watcher - and
her lover. He is killed and she gets a new Watcher, Jason Cromwell. Due to her relationship
with Toscano, Cromwell is initially hostile to her, but eventually cools. Angela lives "many
years" after this. "Many" in this case meaning 3 at most, as Lucy Hanover is active by
1866.
(The first year for Angela mentioned is the book is 1872, but 1862 is specified twice later
and it works better with Giles' ref to Toscano being "mid-nineteenth century". On the other
hand, 1872 would make more sense with the mention of Angela living 'many years' after the
events portrayed in the book since we don't know anything about another Slayer until 1893.
Pick whichever you prefer, I suppose.)

Merrick, her Watcher, who later dies in battle with the Vampire Lothos; Buffy defeats
Lothos in the Hemery High gym; She's also "prettier than the last one" according to the
Master
(based on her "slaying for over a year" comment in "The Witch." I think it's safe to assume
the gym gets burnt down during a later battle, though as someone who's email I deleted
pointed out, in "School Hard" when Sheila comments about burning down the gym, Buffy
replies with something along the lines of "Not exactly...one time," so maybe the
hairspray/cross trick did burn down the gym. Or maybe Buffy was referring to the old
science lab that got burnt down in "Some Assembly Required." The episode "Becoming Pt.
1" showed the series Buffy learn about her destiny from a nameless guy with nowhere near
the style of the movie's Merrick, but I've kept the name and The Watcher's Guide calls him
that, too.)

January 9 - 13
Sixteen-year-old Buffy (sophmore) moves to Sunnydale from L.A. At her new school, she
meets her new Watcher, Rupert Giles, and befriends fellow students Alexander Lavelle
Harris (Xander) and Willow Rosenberg. She also meets class queen-of-cool, Cordelia Chase
and the brooding Angel. She learns about the local vampire leader, the Master, and that she
must disrupt "The Harvest" so the Master cannot escape his underground prison. She foils
the vampire attack on the local hangout, The Bronze, that Friday and Sunnydale is saved.
This time... Monday, it's business as usual, to Xander's shock. "I mean, the dead rose. We
should at least have an assembly."
(some of vaguest dating terms around thrown into this episode - "third day of the newest
light" and only slightly better "from out of the crescent moon, the first past the solstice" but
that's during the time when Sunnydale High would be out for the winter break. Depending
on your definition, 'crescent moon' could be any night other than the full and new moons.
                                                                                           22
For reasons which will become apparent later in the timeline, I'm picking Friday (thanks,
Cordelia), January 10th as the night of the Harvest, which just so happens to be the first
night after the new moon, and thus, it's a crescent moon. Thanks to Jay Laefer for pointing
this out. Works for me, your mileage may vary.)

Buffy decides to try out for cheerleader and meets quiet Amy Madison. Terrible things start
to happen to the cheerleaders, and Buffy and Giles realize a witch is involved. They find out
Amy's mom, Catherine, has switched body with her daughter and is trying to relive her
glory days. Unable to get Amy's body to perform, she uses her powers to eliminate the
competition - including Buffy. During the climatic confrontation after reversing the body-
switch spell, Catherine is caught in her own magicks and transferred into her cheerleading
trophy, on display in Sunnydale High.
(during this ep Buffy says she's fought no vampires in "over a week." She also says she's
been the Slayer for "over a year," giving a rough date for the events of the film as they
relate to the series.)
"The Witch"
February 3 - 7
Buffy’s kindly biology teacher, Dr. Gregory, is attacked after class by a giant praying
mantis. The substitute who replaces him is Miss French, a beautiful, exotic looking woman
whom Xander immediately falls for. She invites both Xander and jock Blayne Moll to assist
her after school in a 'special project.' While tracking a vampire with a metal claw for a
hand, Buffy sees him approach and then run in fright from Miss French. Keeping and eye
on Miss French, Buffy sees her rotate her head one-hundred and eighty degrees. Buffy
connects this to the praying mantis they were studying in biology. Giles gets background
from an institutionalized friend in England who was tracking the She-Mantis. Realizing she
lures young male virgins to their deaths, Willow fears for Xander's life. Buffy uses the claw-
handed vamp to track down the She-Mantis after finding the real Miss French, now in her
seventies and retired. With recordings of bat sonar and a large machete, Buffy defeats the
She-Mantis before it takes Blayne and Xander's virginity and then their lives.

The Master is planning for the arrival of the Anointed One, the Master's greatest warrior
and the Slayer's greatest foe, due to rise from the ashes of five dead. Meanwhile Buffy is
responding to the attentions of Owen Thurman, a handsome, sensitive, poetry-loving
classmate. Giles's research on a ring they found convinces him a prophecy is about to be
filled and forces Buffy to cancel her date with Owen. Nothing happens while they wait at the
cemetery, but elsewhere an airport van with five passengers crashes and is attacked by
vampires. Buffy and Owen try for another date, but Giles learns of the vampire crash and
suspects one passenger, Andrew Borber, of being the Anointed One. Giles, Willow and
Xander decide to check out the funeral home while Buffy is on her date. Giles is attacked
and the other two make it to the Bronze to summon Buffy's aid. Owen follows the gang to
the funeral home and gets knocked out during the fight in which Buffy cremates Borber.
Jazzed by the excitement, Owen wants more but Buffy realizes she can't let him risk his life
to be around her and breaks up with him.

"Never Kill A Boy On The First Date"
March 19 - 21
After an afternoon trip to the local zoo, Xander and a rough gang of bullies are possessed
by hyena spirits. He begins acting strange, cruel, leering at and even sniffing Buffy.
Principal Flutie's new school mascot, Herbert the pig, is eaten. Buffy tries to talk to Xander
but he gets aggressive and Buffy decks him. They lock him in the book cage in the library.
Meanwhile, Flutie has called the rest of the gang into his office to confront them about
Herbert's death, so they eat Flutie, too. Giles figures out what has happened to Xander and
the others and they devise a plan to lure them back to the hyena pen so the spell can be
reversed. The zookeeper knows of the legends and offers his assistance. Too late they realize
the zookeeper had planned on possessing the hyena's power himself, which requires a
predatory act. He grabs Willow but a recovered Xander gets her free and Buffy tosses the
zookeeper into the hyena cage where he becomes a part of them after all, just not like he'd
planned. Xander professes no knowledge of the acts he performed while possessed, but Giles
knows the truth.

"The Pack"
April 8 - 11
Buffy is attacked by three tough vampires but escapes with the mysterious Angel's help. She
convinces him to spend the night in her room since the vampires may still be outside waiting
for them. Giles identifies the vampires and impresses upon Buffy the seriousness of the
problem. Back in her room that evening, Buffy and Angel kiss but he pulls away to
reveal...he's a vampire! We find out the Master's favorite, Darla, is Angel's sire and former
lover. She tries to lure him back to the old ways. Giles discovers that Angel is a 240 year old
vampire who mysteriously stopped killing 80 years earlier and moved to America. Darla
tricks her way into Buffy's house while Buffy is at the library and attacks Joyce. Angel
shows up to stop her but Darla forces the dazed and bleeding Joyce into his arms. Buffy
arrives home to see Angel holding Joyce and throws him out of the house. Realizing that
despite her growing feelings, Angel is a demon-beast who must die, she heads for a
confrontation at the Bronze. Angel tells Buffy about his past and how he had his soul
restored by a gypsy curse, dooming him to forever feel guilt about the horrible things he'd
done as a vampire. Darla shows up and sees her plan to bring Angel back into the fold
hasn't worked and attacks. During the fight Angel impales Darla from behind (and a
certain web page maker goes into mourning). The Master goes berserk when he learns of
Darla's death, but the Anointed One comforts him. Buffy and Angel realize they can never
be together and share one last kiss, which leaves the imprint of Buffy's cross burned into his
chest.
(Buffy's mom was working on her taxes when Darla attacked her and I don't think Joyce
would wait until April 15th to do them, so I placed it the week prior.)

Buffy, Willow and Xander, along with computer experts Fritz and Dave and computer

"I, Robot - You, Jane"
April 22 - 25
Willow reveals to Buffy she's having an online romance with a boy named Malcolm. Buffy
doesn't like the idea. Willow even misses school because of the relationship, coming in at
fifth period one day. When Buffy tries to get Dave to help her find out about Malcolm, Dave
rather strongly tells her to leave Willow alone. Suspicious of his attitude, Buffy follows him
to Cadillax Research and Development, which seems plenty busy for a shut down factory.
Miss Calendar notices the blank pages in the book and Giles begins to worry some could be
up. Dave tells Buffy Willow wants to see her in girls' locker room, where Fritz has rigged a
trap to electrocute her. Buffy's Slayer abilities enable her to survive. A guilt-ridden Dave
tells a computer he can't go through with killing, so the computer types up a suicide note.
Giles tells Buffy and Xander that in the Dark Ages, demons were sometimes trapped in the
pages of books. It seems that scanning the pages "read" them, and allowed the demon
Moloch to escape into the internet. They realize not only Willow but Dave and Fritz are in
the demon's thrall. Looking for Willow, Buffy finds Dave's body, complete with computer-
typed suicide note. Fritz kidnaps Willow and takes her to Cadillax, where Moloch has set up
headquarters. Giles ask Miss Calendar for help, surprised to discover her mystical abilities
- she's a techno-pagan. At the warehouse, Moloch's robotic incarnation kills Fritz and is
advancing on Willow when Buffy and Xander arrive. Buffy fights Moloch's robotic
incarnation, which electrically fries itself when it punches a junction box.

New principal Snyder forces Giles to supervise Sunnydale's talent show. Snyder also forces
Buffy, Willow and Xander to participate when they mock the proceedings. Emily, a dancer,
is found dead, her heart removed. Buffy questions Morgan, a ventriloquist who was the last
person seen talking to Emily. Morgan's dummy Sid seems to have a mind of his own and
Morgan acts like he's real. That night, Buffy could swear Sid, sans Morgan, was in her
room. Giles tells the gang about a group of demons who need human organs to maintain a
human guise. Willow also finds a story about dolls and mannequins which can become
human by harvesting organs. Searching for Morgan, Buffy finds him dead, brain removed.
A lighting rig lands on her and Sid appears, knife in hand. They think each other is the
demon. Realizing their mistake, Buffy finds out Sid is a demon slayer from the 30s, cursed
into dummy form. He's after the demon who cursed him so he can kill it and be free of the
curse, which means his own mortal death. They discover Morgan had brain cancer. The
demon still needs a brain. At the talent show preparation, Marc asks Giles to help with his
guillotine trick. Buffy shows in time to save Giles from having the top of his head cut off,
and Sid manages to kill the demon after it shucks Marc's form. Sid the puppet collapses as
the curtains open, revealing the gang to a stunned audience.

"Nightmares"
May 15 - 16
Buffy dreams about the Master attacking her, and in school a student opens a book and is
attacked by spiders pouring out of it. Buffy sees a young boy watching. The Master tells the
Anointed One that fear is the most powerful force in the world, and changes are about to
take place. More student nightmares come true, and a girl is attacked by huge, deformed
man. The only clue to the attacker's identity she can remember is that it said "Lucky
nineteen." Xander finds out he's in class in only his boxer shorts. Buffy notices a newspaper
article about a boy in a coma. The picture is of the boy she saw, Billy, and he's wearing a
baseball uniform with the number 19 on it. Buffy's father arrives at school to tell her their
weekend get together is off. He tells Buffy it's her fault he left her mother and that he's not
going to visit her anymore He leaves Buffy speechless and in tears. Buffy sees the boy again.
Giles realizes everyone's nightmares are coming true, and that they could be fatal. Buffy
tracks down the boy, who tells her the Ugly Man wants to kill him. The Ugly Man attacks
and is too much for Buffy to handle. Willow finds herself onstage expected to perform an
opera. Xander is chased by a clown that scared him when he was young. Buffy and the boy
find themselves in the cemetery while trying to escape the Ugly Man, but the Master
appears and shoves Buffy into a grave. Giles, Willow and Xander realize they have to find
Buffy and wake Billy or the nightmares will take over reality. Giles sees his nightmare,
Buffy's grave. Buffy emerges from the grave, a victim of another of her nightmares. She's
now a vampire. They go to the hospital to try and wake Billy and the Ugly Man attacks.
Buffy puts him down and asks Billy to finish it. He peels something off the Ugly Man's face
and wakes up, reality restored. Billy's coach enters the room, surprised to see the boy
awake. They realize he's the one who attacked Billy after his team lost a game. Later,
Buffy's dad really shows, greeting her cheerfully and ready for their weekend. The
nightmares are over for now.

Cordelia's new boyfriend is beaten up by a baseball bat with a mind of it's own. Giles thinks
they're after a ghost or invisible demon. Cordy's friend Harmony is tossed down some stairs
by something unseen. Buffy hears a voice and tries to track it, but can't. Buffy asks Willow
for a list of missing kids, while Angel shows up to warn Giles of "something big" but he's
not sure what. Cordelia is elected May Queen. Buffy thinks Marcie Ross may be the
invisible girl, because Marcie was in the band and Buffy found a hideout above the band
room. A teacher who was going to help Cordelia is attacked and nearly suffocated. Xander
and Willow realize they both had several classes with Marcie, even signing her yearbook,
but they don't remember her. Giles surmises that thanks to the mystic influence of the
Hellmouth, Marcie became invisible because that's how she felt. Buffy realizes the attacks
all center around Cordy and that she's probably the next target. She's right, and Cordy is
grabbed while preparing for coronation. Marcie then lures Giles, Willow and Xander into
the boiler room, where they're locked in and succumb to gas fumes. Marcie has both Buffy
and Cordelia tied up at the Bronze and prepares to give Cordelia "a facial no one will ever
forget" but Buffy frees herself and defeats Marcie. As she does, FBI agents show up and
take Marcie away. Angel frees the gang from the boiler room, though Giles, mindfull of her
feelings about the vampire, tells her it was a janitor.
                                                                                           26

While Xander works up the nerve to ask Buffy to the prom, she's having a tough time with
some vampires, Giles discovers a prophecy concerning the Master and the Slayer, and an
earthquake hits Sunnydale. Buffy turns down Xander's invitation. Giles and Miss Calendar
realize the earthquake is one sign of a coming apocalypse. Most frightening of all, Buffy
hears Giles tell Angel "Tomorrow she'll face the Master and she will die." Buffy wigs out
and tells Giles she's quitting the Slayer gig. A roomfull of students, including Cordelia's
latest boyfriend, are slain by vampires in the A/V room and found by Willow. Seeing
Willow so freaked strengthens Buffy's resolve and she goes to the library to find Giles
suiting up to face the Master. He's decided she's not going to face him no matter what.
Buffy knocks him out and goes anyway, armed with her trusty crossbow. Xander, aware of
the prophecy of Buffy's death, forces Angel to take him underground to try and help her.
By the time they find her, the prophecy is fulfilled. Buffy is dead and the Master is free.
Fortunately, the prophecy writers didn't know about CPR, and Xander is able to revive
Buffy. Willow, Cordelia and Miss Calendar are surrounded by a horde of vampires
converging on the school. They make it to the library with Giles only to have a huge,
tentacled demon rises up through the floor and attacks. Buffy fights the Master on the roof,
eventually throwing him down through the skylight and impaling him on the broken
remains of one of the library's tables. He disintegrates down to just a skeleton, and the
demon withdraws back into the Hellmouth.
The gang decides there's still time to make the prom, because "We saved the world. I say we
party," says Buffy, the Vampire Slayer.

"When She Was Bad"
September 2 - 5
Buffy (now in her junior year) returns to Sunnydale from her summer vacation in L.A. with
her dad but she's not the same old happy-go-lucky Slayer. Her death, temporary tho' it was,
freaked her out more than she's willing to let on. Meanwhile, the Anointed One has a plan
to bring the Master back to un-life. Angel tries to warn her that the Anointed One is up to
something, but Buffy's acting cold and nasty to everyone, even dancing seductively (or
'making it with' depending on your point of view) with Xander to make Angel jealous.
Vampires kidnap Willow, Cordelia, Giles and Miss Calendar, beating up Xander in the
process. He tells Buffy off about her behavior and they go to save their friends with Angel.
After the gang is safe and all the vampires are destroyed ('cept for the Anointed One who
sneaks away) Buffy grinds the Master's bones to powder, finally coming to terms with what
happened at their last meeting. She apologizes to Giles but is scared to face Xander and
Willow in class, but when she arrives, it's just like old times. the three are still best buds.
(I'm going with a more traditional - to me, at least - beginning of Sept. to beginning of June

17 year old Meredith Todd and two other girls from the Fonderin High pep squad die in a
car accident on the way to a game
"Some Assembly Required"
September 10 - 12
After staking new vampire Stephen Korshak in the cemetary, Buffy falls into an empty
grave and discovers that the body of Meredith Todd has been dug up. After cheerleading
practice one night, Cordelia gets scared and hides in a dumpster, discovering pieces of three
bodies, Meredith Todd and the two others. But some of the parts are missing. Clues lead
them to Chris Epps, a science nerd who's been withdrawn since his brother Daryl's death.
Chris and his buddy Eric have been pulling a Frankenstein, making a girl from the parts
they kept, but not for selfish reasons. They'd already brought Daryl back, and now are
making him a companion. Unfortunately, the three girls weren't fresh enough and
formaldehyde had destroyed the brains. They still need a fresh head, but Daryl's choice,
Cordelia, is still alive and Chris doesn't want to kill anyone. Meanwhile, Giles and Miss
Calendar are on their first official date at a school football game. Cordelia is cheerleading at
the game and Eric decides to kill her and finish their project. Buffy arrives in the nick of
time to save Cordy, and during the fight with Daryl in the old science building gasoline
spills and catches on fire. Xander saves Cordy from the flames but Daryl opts to stay with
his headless girlfriend and perishes again, for the last time.
                                                                                               28
Angel admits to Buffy he's a little jealous of Xander, especially after Buffy's dance with

"Some Assembly Required"
September 16 - 18
The night of St. Vigius is coming and the Anointed One has a plan to gain extra power by
killing Buffy on this unholy holiday, but Buffy has bigger concerns. Principal Snyder is
forcing her and another troublemaker, Sheila, to organize Parent Teacher Night or be
expelled. Meanwhile, a new vampire, Spike, arrives in town. Barely two hundred years old
(or not, see 1873 entry) and he's already killed two Slayers. And he's not alone, for his
insane vampire girlfriend, Drusillasilla, is with him. Giles tries to get Buffy to take the
threat seriously but Buffy is caught up in organizing Parent Teacher Night and covering for
Sheila's constant absence. During the big night, Buffy tries to keep her mom and Snyder
from hooking up but gets sidetracked by Spike and the vampires attack on the school.
Seems Spike is the impatient type and doesn't want to wait for the night of St. Vigius.
Others join the party: Sheila, who is now a vampire, and Angel, Spike's "Yoda," who tries
to act like he's still his bad old self. Spike doesn't fall for it. Buffy continues to fight Spike
until her mother whacks him over the head with an axe and he runs off. When he gets back
to the vampire's lair, the Anointed One is angry. Not in a good mood himself, Spike shoves
the "Annoying One" into a cage and hoists him up into the sunlight. The Anointed One is
up in smoke and Spike and Drusilla go off to watch the telly.

The Night of St. Vigius
"School Hard"
September 22 - 25
Sunnydale High is sponsoring a cultural exchange program, bringing in foreign students to
live with Sunnydale students and see what a 'typical' American high school is like. Xander
is unhappy because Buffy's student is a guy. In the meantime, while their class is on a
museum trip, Rodney Munson tries to take a sacred seal from an Incan mummy only to end
up taking the mummy's place after it rises and kisses him.
Looking for the missing student, Buffy and the gang backtrack to the museum, where they
find Rodney's mummified mummy and are attacked by a machete-wielding man. Giles tries
to piece together the seal's message, but has trouble translating the pictograms.
Buffy's exchange student arrives in town, only to meet the risen mummy, who gives him the
kiss of death, too, and transforms into a beautiful girl. When the gang arrives, the mummy
girl pretends to be Empada, the exchange student. Xander is, to put it mildly, pleased.
Okay, he flips for her.
Giles enlists Empada's aid in translating the seal. She says the man with the knife is a
bodyguard. Said bodyguard shows up again at school, attacking Xander and Empada, but
they get away. Empada tells Giles to destroy the seal, but Giles wants to find the rest of it.
The bodyguard shows up again, only to fall victim to Empada's kiss.
Xander takes Empada to the school dance, where she starts to revert to mummy form.
Meanwhile, Buffy and Giles find the mummified exchange student and realize Empada is
the mummy, a teenage girl chosen at a young age to sacrifice her life to save her people, a
story close to home for Buffy.
                                                                                            29
Oz the guitarist notices an Eskimo-clad Willow, wondering "Who's that girl?", at the dance
while Empada searches for someone to kiss and rejuvenate herself. She heads to the
museum to try and destroy the seal before Giles restores it and traps her again. Buffy fights
her to save Giles from her kiss, but is tossed into the sarcophagus. Empada grabs Willow,
but Xander steps forward, offering his own life. Torn, Empada succumbs and starts to kiss
Xander but Buffy escapes and grabs her in time. She mummifies in Xander's arms and falls
to pieces.
At school, Xander is depressed about his taste in women but Buffy defends Empada,
knowing what it's like to have a destiny that gets in the way of a normal life.

Callie Megan Anderson, of Kent Prepatory School just outside Sunnydale, disappears.
("over a week" before episode)
"Reptile Boy"
October 8 - 10
Callie nearly escapes from the Delta Zeta Kappa fraternity. The Scooby Gang is blissfully
unaware of this, jazzing on the recent lack of Hellmouthy activity, though Buffy did find
part of a bloody bracelet in the cemetary.
Cordy's dating frat-boy Richard Anderson of Crestwood College. He's a jerk, but his pal
Tom Warner is charming, and interested in Buffy. He asks her to the upcoming frat party
but she demures since she's sort-of involved with Angel.
Dejected when Angel refuses to go on a real date with her, Buffy decides to go to the party
with Cordelia after all, lying about it to Giles.
At the party, the girls are drugged and chained up in the basement with Callie. Seems the
frat is a demon-worshipping cult who have to sacrifice three girls a year to the snake demon
Machida.
Willow tracks down the bracelet to the school where Callie disappeared from, and finds out
three girls disappeared last year, too. She tells Giles where Buffy really is and the gang ride
to the rescue. Buffy hacks the snake-demon in half as Angel and the rest help subdue the
frat boys. The frat is arrested and the remains of many past sacrifices are found.

"Reptile Boy"
October 29 - November 1
Buffy is videotaped Slaying (which messes up her first real date with Angel) by one of
Spike's vampire minions.
Buffy and the gang get roped into chaperoning kids for Halloween, which bums Buffy
because it's actually her one night off. Seems all the real monsters stay in that night. Buffy
and Willow sneak one of Giles's Watcher journals in an effort to find out more about
Angel's past. Buffy sees a drawing of a noblewoman from 1775 (when Angel was 18) and
feels there's no way she could hope to compete with a woman like that. Then she sees a
beautiful dress in a costume shop. A dress just like the one in the drawing. She chooses it to
impress Angel, while Willow gets a lame ghost costume and Xander picks up a toy gun to go
with his Army fatigues. While Spike is studying the videotape, Drusilla has a vision of some
outside force causing the Slayer to become weak on Halloween. Maybe there will be
something for the vampires to do that night after all?
                                                                                             30
And the costume shop owner chants by candlelight to a bizarre, two-faced statue.
Buffy convinces Willow to dress really daring for Halloween, but by the time they're ready
to go out, she's retreated back under her ghost sheet. As they lead their troop of trick-or-
treaters around the neighborhood things start to change. Everyone, at least everyone who
bought stuff at the same shop Buffy and the gang did, becomes whatever they're dressed
like. Willow finds herself an immaterial ghost, Xander a macho soldier, and Buffy a weak
noble who expects everyone else to watch out for her. Willow gets word to Giles about
what's happening while Spike goes to kill the helpless Buffy. Giles figures out that the
costume shop is the source of the trouble and finds Ethan Rayne, an old "friend" from his
past. An un characteristically violent Giles pummels Ethan into revealing how to break the
spell, and just in time. Buffy returns to her old self just as Spike is ready to put the bite on
her. Buffy beats the tar out of him in front of an audience of scared kids, also back to
normal, before Spike manages to get away. Awakening back in her body, the no-longer
ghostly Willow decides to ditch the sheet, and crosses the street in front of a van driven by
Oz, who once again wonders just who she is. Later, Buffy tells Angel she dressed like that to
please him, but he tells her he never liked the noblewomen of his day. They weren't exciting
enough for him.
When Giles goes back to the costume shop, it's deserted save for a note from Ethan: "Be
seeing you."
"Halloween"
November 2 - 6
In the park, Buffy spies Angel talking to a strange girl -- who we recognize as Drusillasilla,
the evil Spike's spaced-out paramour.
The next day at school, Buffy runs into an old friend, Billy Fordham. "Ford" has
transferred to Sunnydale from their old school (from which Buffy was suspended) to finish
his senior year. Later at the Bronze, Ford admits that he knows she's the slayer. We see him
enter the Sunset Club which is crawling with ghoulish people and find out he is plotting
something with them.
Angel, who's gotten a bad vibe from Ford, enlists Willow's help in investigating the kid on
the Internet.
Meanwhile, Buffy and Ford encounter some vampires on school grounds, and as she runs
off to slay one, Ford tells a girl vampire he'll spare her if she'll give him information. When
Buffy returns, he pretends that he killed the girl. Even though Willow doesn't find any
incriminating evidence against Ford, Angel's still sure he's bad news, and he, Willow and
Xander go to Ford's hangout. It seems all these creepy kids are not really undead, but just
vampire wannabes. Concerned that the vampires have come to Sunnydale High, Buffy
beeps Giles, who's out on a date with Miss Calendar at a monster truck rally. They all meet
at the library, and Buffy spots a picture of Drusilla in Giles' book. Suddenly, a girl vampire
runs in, grabs the book and flees -- the vampire Ford said he killed. Back at Spike's lair,
Ford enters and offers His Evilness a deal -- if he'll turn Ford into a vampire, Ford will give
him Buffy. Angel finally warns Buffy about Ford. When she confronts him about Drusilla,
he reluctantly reveals that he was responsible for her death -- he had been obsessed with
her, and he tortured and killed her. Buffy finally trusts Angel, and agrees to go out with
Ford to set him up.
When she goes to his hangout he and his friends lock her in. She tries to explain to them
that becoming a vampire doesn't mean living eternally, but Ford takes her aside and
confides that he has only 6 months to live, and this is the best alternative to death he can
find.
                                                                                              31
At sunset, Spike, Drusilla and company bust in and start ravaging the group. Buffy grabs
Drusilla and tells Spike she'll kill his girl unless everyone is released. The wannabes are
released and Buffy escapes, but leaves Ford inside to the death he prayed for.
In the morning, Buffy goes back to the club and sees Ford's body, probably to see if Spike
made him a vampire.
"Lie to Me"
November 6 - 8
That night, Philip Henry tries to get into the library to see Giles but is killed by a female
demon that used to be Deidre Page. After killing him,she turns into a puddle of green goo.
At school, Giles tells Buffy to meet him later at the hospital for a blood delivery, which
attracts vampires. Back at the library, a detective is waiting for Giles --the dead man had
Giles' address on him. Giles identifies the body as an old friend from London. The body has
a tattoo on it, which Giles says he can't identify. Shaken, Giles doesn't meet Buffy at the
hospital, and she battles the vampires alone until Angel shows up. When Buffy goes to Giles'
house to see what happened, he's disheveled and sends her away. He tries to call Diedre in
London and finds out that she's dead, too. As he rolls up his sleeves, we see he has the same
tattoo as his friend. Meanwhile, the dead friend, Phillip, comes back to life in the morgue,
his eyes flashing, and escapes.
Willow, Xander, and Cordelia meet with Jenny Calendar -- Giles' girlfriend -- for a make-
up computer class. Buffy shows up to express her concern about Giles' behavior. Cordelia
mentions the police visit to the library, which slipped her Cordelia-centered mind. In the
library, Buffy finds Ethan, the costume shop owner and Giles old friend who tried to kill
her on Halloween. As she calls Giles, Ethan mentions the "Mark of Eyghon." Giles says
she's in danger, and the dead Phillip enters. A panicked Giles shows up and, after a scuffle
which leaves Jenny unconscious, Phillip turns into the green goo. Some of it gets on Jenny
and when she comes to, she seems normal but we see her eyes flash. Research freak Willow
discovers the "Mark of Eyghon" in a book: Eyghon possesses the body of a dead or
unconscious host. They figure out that he's jumped from Phillip's body to Jenny's.
Possessed Jenny, looking and sounding like a demon, tries to seduce Giles. When Buffy
comes to the rescue, Jenny jumps out the window. Giles explains to Buffy that he ran with a
bad crowd when he was young, and they used Eyghon as a temporary high -- directing him
in and out of each others' bodies. But one friend died, then later the girl who killed Phillip,
and now it seems the rest of the group will die, too. Buffy goes to the deserted costume shop
to try to help Ethan but he knocks her out, ties her up and tattoos her. He pours acid on his
own tattoo so that Eyghon will take Buffy instead of him. Jenny enters, a full-tilt demon,
and Buffy breaks free. Angel enters suddenly and chokes Jenny: the spirit leaves her body
and enters Angel's, since he's really dead (Willow's plan: you go, girl!) It passes through
Angel, and Jenny's back to normal, but Ethan escapes.
(Ends on Saturday according to episode. I've had to shoehorn this one in to fit, but between
Halloween and a full moon for "What's My Line" there's not a lot of time. I said up top it
wouldn't work out exactly, right?)

"The Dark Age"
November 10 - 13
Meanwhile, it's Career Week at Sunnydale High for everyone but Buffy -- her fate as the
Slayer has already been sealed. While Buffy is bummed, Spike seeks out a cure for Drusilla
by having a transcriber go through a book stolen from Giles. They realize the book is in
code, and through tarot cards, they can figure out what to do. While at the cemetery, Buffy
enters a mausoleum and sees the transcriber and another vampire -- she's able to kill the
vampire, but the transcriber eludes her. When she returns home, Angel is waiting for her
and warns her of trouble. She's still upset about Career Day, and reveals her secret
childhood obsession with ice skater Dorothy Hamill.
("Tuesday" according to episode) Giles worries about the missing vampire and what was
taken from the mausoleum. We see Spike with a coffin pillow adorned with a cross -- part of
the cure. He knows if Buffy keeps interrupting, he'll never get the key to curing Drusilla, so
he decides to summon bounty hunters -- the most savage of killers. Giles chastises Buffy as
they examine the mausoleum together and Giles finds the name "duLac" -- he was the
author of the stolen book Spike has; a book of evil spells written in archaic Latin. They
realize the cross has been stolen from his crypt, and it is the tool which will allow Spike to
wreak havoc -- Giles says he must decipher the book first in order to save them. Meanwhile,
three strangers start hitting town and doing their damage-- one is a door-to-door cosmetic
salesman, one is an evil-looking guy, and one is a beautiful woman.
Buffy blows off the deciphering session to go skate with Angel, but Evil Guy is already
there. Angel tries to save her but she's able to cut the guy's throat with her skate blade.
Angel wigs when he sees the guy's ring.
Giles identifies the ring as the symbol of the Order of Teraka -- the deadly assassins. These
are not the ordinary vamps; they'll stop at nothing to kill everything in their paths. Buffy
freaks and goes to Angel's house while Angel goes to a local bar, trolling for information
about the bounty hunters. The beautiful woman arrives and attacks Angel, locking him in a
cage where he'll be vulnerable to deadly sunlight within hours. While working with the
transcriber, Spike has finally found the answer to curing Drusilla.
As Xander and Cordelia go looking for Buffy at her house, Cordelia lets the cosmetics
salesman in. Back at Angel's house, the beautiful woman tries to kill Buffy with an axe,
identifying herself as Kendra, The Vampire Slayer... Buffy freaks as Kendra identifies
herself as the Slayer. They realize that Kendra was summoned as the new Slayer when
Buffy died -- temporarily drowned, that is. Kendra, too, knows that evil is coming. Near
death at daybreak, Angel is dragged from the cell by the guy from the bar -- he dumps him
in a sewer and turns him over to Spike and Drusilla. When the full moon comes that night,
they will perform the ritual they figured out from the transcriber and Angel will die. Giles
seems to be bonding with Kendra, making Buffy feel left out. Now that there's a spare
slayer, Buffy considers giving up the business. At Buffy's house, Cordelia chats merrily with
the cosmetics guy until she realizes he has bugs crawling all over him. He turns into a huge
pile of them, sending Cordelia and Xander into hiding, and they fight over what to do. In
the heat of the argument, they kiss passionately (?!). They manage to escape and speed off
in Cordy's car. At Sunnydale High, Willow chats with Oz, her male computer nerd
counterpart, about their similar Career Fair paths. A police woman supervising the fair
suddenly opens fire on Buffy and accidentally shoots Oz, but Kendra comes to Buffy's
rescue. When the gang assembles in the library, Giles announces he's figured out the ritual:
Angel will die that night.
                                                                                           33
Buffy and Kendra go to the bar to try to get help finding Angel, but Kendra bails,
convinced that Angel is evil. Meanwhile, Drusilla is having a field day with her ex-
tormentor Angel, dousing him with holy water and watching him writhe in pain. The Bar
Guy leads Buffy to the church, which is filled with evil Tenaka bounty hunters. Buffy
watches in horror as Drusilla holds onto the tied-up Angel, sapping his power. As the
policewoman assassin goes to shoot Buffy, Kendra enters to save her. Willow, Xander,
Cordelia and Giles burst in and help, too. Xander and Cordelia wait for Bug Guy to, well,
bug out, then they pour glue all over him and stomp on the helpless creatures. Buffy
releases Angel, but Spike sets the room on fire and grabs Drusilla. Before they're able to
escape, Buffy hurls something at them and sends them crashing into a huge organ,
squooshing them both. The charm-free Kendra leaves town, and Buffy is the Number One
Slayer once again. But all is not well. Emerging from the rubble in the church is Drusilla,
now fully vamped out and strong enough to carry the injured Spike to safety. She's back,
and she's bad.
(Okay, this one causes problems due to references to both the new and full moon. I picked
this week because the full moon was on a Friday, and the entire show seems to be taking
place during the school week. Also there's a comment about the moon 'rising', a term I
don't recall hearing when talking about the new moon. Conflicts with 'reality' due to the
fact that while Tuesday is stated as the day of Buffy and Angel's skate-date, the show seems
to end two days later, Thursday, which isn't actually the full moon. Apparently, the spell
isn't picky and accepts the night before and after the true full moon, like some werewolf
stories do.)
"What's My Line"
Tara turns 17 in November. Sometime during this year her mother dies.
"The Body"
November 26 - December 3
On a Wednesday night, Buffy kills a vampire in the park
Buffy's walks in on her mom and mom's new beau, Ted, smooching in the kitchen. Ted
seems too good to be true. He cooks and he's a computer specialist -- making him an instant
hit with both Xander and Willow, but not Buffy, who's so uncomfortable with her mom
starting a relationship with someone that she nearly beats a vampire to death before staking
him in the park. And then wants more vampires to fight.
At school, Giles awkwardly chats with Jenny Calendar, but she says his concern about her
well-being (since she's recovered from being a demon) is getting on her nerves.
Ted continues to charm the gang, until he talks to Buffy alone at the mini-golf course on
Saturday and reveals a decidedly dark side.
Buffy puts on her Angela Lansbury hat and checks out Ted's place of business. She finds
out from a co-worker that he's engaged. She asks Joyce and Ted at dinner if this is true, and
Ted denies it -- but he's certainly hoping to ask Joyce to marry him if all goes well. Buffy
leaves and returns through her window as usual, only to find Ted snooping through her
things. He sees her slayer journal, and threatens to show it to Joyce if Buffy doesn't toe the
line. She talks back to him, and he pummels her. A fight ensues and one of her blows knocks
him down the steps -- killing him.
Buffy goes to school in a daze -- she's never killed someone who wasn't already undead.
Knowing Buffy wouldn't have tangled with someone just because he was dating her mom,
Xander, Willow and Cordelia try to figure out what Ted was up to. Xander's extremely
concerned, but suddenly says, "Don't sweat it." This is a big, honking clue to Willow, and
she realizes what's caused Xander's change of attitude -- he's eating one of Ted's
homebaked cookies. Analyzation shows the cookies contain a tranquilizer.
                                                                                           34
Then Cordelia investigates further and finds out Ted has had four wives. Meanwhile, at the
cemetery, Jenny apologizes to Giles for being short with him, but their warm fuzzy moment
is interrupted by a vampire who attacks Giles. Jenny tries to shoot the demon with Giles'
crossbow, but hits Giles by accident. Giles removes the bolt and kills the demon. Buffy
discovers the dead Ted in her room, looking remarkably healthy. She stabs him with a nail
file and discovers he's a robot. Xander, Willow and Cordelia continue their sleuthing and
stumble upon what's left of Ted's ex-wives in his closet. Back at the Buffy's, Ted approaches
Joyce, who is freaked to see him, then glad to see him, then completely wigged when he
starts short-circuiting and revealing his intent to dominate her. Buffy whacks him with a
frying pan, exposing his robot face and killing him (although on this show you never
know...).
At school, it's just another ordinary post-slaying day at Sunnydale, until the gang discover
Giles and Jenny making out.
("three weeks" since "The Dark Age" according to Jenny)
"Ted"
December 7 - 10
Buffy runs into a cowboy vampire at the mall, then returns to her mom Joyce, who is
becoming increasingly annoyed about her daughter's lack of responsibility.
The next day at school in health class, the students are asked to take care of an egg as if it
were a baby, to teach them how much responsibility it takes to be a parent. Giles warns
Buffy about the vamp she ran into -- he and his brother, the Gorches, are cowboy vampires,
but he's not sure why they've been drawn to Sunnydale at this time. But Buffy's head is not
into slaying or egg-raising these days -- she's ever more into the dreamy Angel, and her
nights at the cemetery have become nothing more than make-out sessions with her undead
man.
2:03 AM - Buffy's egg cracks enough to allow strange tentacles to crawl out and onto her
sleeping face. She doesn't awaken. By the time she wakes up, the tentacles are gone, the hole
in the egg resealed, and aside from feeling a little funky, Buffy doesn't realize anything is
going on.
2:45 AM - When Buffy returns from her non-productive investigation of the Gorches, she
finds her egg baby shaking -- she's wigged. A gross scorpion-like slimy creature bursts from
it and attacks her, but she manages to stab it to death. She calls Willow to let her know
what's happened, but Willow says her own egg baby is fine, and there's nothing to worry
about. But we see that Willow is lying, because her own egg is indeed broken apart, and she
has a spaced-out look on her face. When Joyce enters Buffy's room and finds her fully
dressed, she thinks she's getting ready to sneak out and grounds her. At school, Willow
gathers the gang for a monster autopsy. But she and Cordelia, whose egg has also spawned
a creature, wind up decking Buffy and Xander and dragging them into a broom closet.
Then, Willow, Cordy and a bunch of other students and teachers head zombie-like to the
basement with shovels and axes. Even Joyce winds up getting possessed, when she comes to
school to fetch her grounded daughter and instead finds a spaced-out Giles, who throws one
of the creatures onto her. When Buffy and Xander come to, they find a book which explains
what's going on. There is a creature in the basement called a bazor, whose offspring attach
themselves to human hosts and take control of their motor functions. They follow a
possessed student to the basement and discover Willow, Cordy, Giles, Joyce, and a bunch of
others harvesting eggs from a gigantic slimy parasite. As Buffy looks for a weapon big
enough to toast this mama bazor, the Gorch brothers show up. One of the bazor's tentacles
drags Buffy under the floor, and suddenly all the babies fall off of their human hosts, who
then fall to the ground. Somehow Buffy emerges victorious and the Gorches know they've
met their match.
                                                                                             35
The newly-unzombied Giles stumbles for an explanation for what's happened to everyone,
and tells the student body there'd been a gas leak. Once Joyce gets her bearing, Buffy is
more grounded than ever. She's not allowed to leave her room, but that doesn't stop her
from making out with Angel, who she kisses from her window as he is perched outside.
"Bad Eggs"
January 5 -
Buffy's nightmare about Drusilla killing Angel gives her a major wiggins. She tells Angel
about it in the morning, afraid that Drusilla might still be alive, but he thinks there's
nothing to worry about. They kiss a lot. That morning at school, Buffy is all swoony about
Angel, and Willow encourages her to move their relationship to the next level. Willow
works up the nerve to talk to Oz, the guitar-playing cybernerd who's been mooning over
her, and he asks her out for the following night -- where he'll be her date for Buffy's
surprise 17th birthday bash. When Buffy tells Giles and Jenny Calendar about her dream,
Giles says it's possible that Drusilla is alive, and to be on alert. Sure enough, we see Spike
and Drusilla at the factory. Spike is scarred and in a wheelchair but as evil as ever. Drusilla
is planning a party, too, but it's a safe bet there'll be no chips and dip at this one.
January 6 -
A strange man approaches Jenny in class -- it is her uncle, and we discover she is actually a
gypsy whose entire family was killed by Angel when he was the superevil Angelus. The
uncle says it's not fair for Angel to have any happiness, so it's Jenny's duty to keep Buffy
away from him. Jenny offers to take Buffy to meet Giles off campus, and they discover some
vamps making trouble -- one of whom is the transcriber who once worked for Spike. As
Buffy and one of the vamps scuffle, they go flying through the window of the Bronze where
the surprise party awaits. Newcomer Oz is startled to see Buffy slay one of them, and now
he's officially part of the gang. They open the box the vamps were carrying, and it contains
an arm which reaches out and chokes Buffy. Angel explains there was a creature called The
Judge who destroyed everyone who was righteous. He was finally dismembered by an army,
but his parts still exist, and reassembling him would bring on armageddon. Angel says he
must take that arm to the other side of the world, and must leave by boat immediately.
Buffy joins him at the dock to say goodbye, and he gives her a claddagh ring as a token of
his love. As they say goodbye, the vamps are back and the arm is stolen.
Drusilla's party is in full swing, and The Judge is the main attraction. His first conquest is
the transcriber, who he ignites with just a touch. When Buffy and Angel go to the factory to
see if they can find any more parts, they see it's too late, and The Judge spots them. They
escape to Angel's pad, where he finally tells her he loves her. They make love and go to
sleep. An undressed Angel awakens with a start and runs outside, suddenly fully dressed in
black, and collapses. He calls Buffy's name but she stays asleep.
Buffy awakens to find Angel gone. Angel is in the street, still calling her name. A woman
stops to see if he's in trouble, and he slays her. He's Angelus again.
                                                                                           36
January 7 -
Meanwhile, the gang at school, who pulled an all-nighter trying to track down The Judge's
parts, are worried about Buffy. She shows up and tells them what they just figured out --
The Judge is already assembled. Angel returns to the factory, and The Judge can't kill him,
which confirms that he's pure evil once again.
Xander and Cordelia's secret smooching is witnessed by Willow, who's completely crushed.
Buffy finally finds Angel in his apartment, but he's distant, snotty and generally obnoxious.
She is devastated. Jenny's uncle says that if Angel experiences one moment of true
happiness, his soul will be taken and Angelus will return. This freaks out Jenny, who
realizes that many people will die. As Willow and Xander try to make up, Angel appears at
school and asks Willow to approach him. Jenny shows up with a cross and Angel grabs
Willow, trying to bite her. Buffy enters and he kisses her, then shoves her and leaves. Giles
says some event must have triggered this transformation, but Buffy won't say, leaving
Willow to figure out that they must have made love. Buffy goes home and sobs. She dreams
of her special night with Angel, then of a funeral where Jenny is in black.
January 8 -
She busts into Jenny's class, demanding to know what she knows. Jenny admits she's a
watcher sent to keep Angel from happiness, so he'd pay for what he did. Buffy tells her to
restore his curse to make him human again. Xander decides that even though no forged
weapon could kill The Judge, that was way before today's technology, so he sneaks in an
army base (using what he learned when he became a soldier on Halloween). Buffy, Giles
and Jenny discover her uncle's body-- Angel killed him. The Judge, who was weak from all
those years of not killing, is finally ready to take over the world. The gang wonders where
he'll find the crowds he wants, since the Bronze is closed, and Oz suggests the movies at the
mall. The Judge is there, preparing to vaporize everyone. Wielding the biggest, baddest gun
imaginable, Buffy shoots The Judge. He's toast -- well, at least dismembered again -- and
the crowd is saved. But Angel still wants to kill Buffy. She doesn't have the heart to slay
him, but gives him a wicked kick in the groin, which knocks him to the floor. Giles warns
Buffy that Angel is sure to keep pursuing her in his new evil incarnation, but he doesn't
scold her for what happened. She and her mom have a belated birthday celebration, but
Buffy doesn't even want to make a wish on her candle, and just forlornly puts her head on
her mom's shoulder and watches a romantic old movie.
(Based on my figuring, this makes Buffy's birthday the 6th of January. Xander is already 17
in this episode.)
"Surprise" / "Innocence"
January 8 -
Willow and Oz go to a movie
January 9 -
At school, Oz thinks it's odd how the cheerleading trophy's eyes seem to follow him. Willow
laments to Buffy that her new boyfriend Oz is not as smoochy as she'd like.
January 11 -
Xander and Cordelia take advantage of the night by parking and -- whatta surprise --
making out, but they're interrupted by a werewolf who rips through the top of poor
Cordy's dad's convertible.
                                                                                            37
January 12 -
The approaching full moon has Sunnydale's self-defense class preparing for crazies, and
macho thug Larry mistakenly comes on to Buffy and is promptly and painfully flipped.
Giles alerts the gang that werewolves strike the nights before, during and after the full
moon, so they are not out of the woods yet (sorry). As Giles and Buffy await their four-
legged friend, Buffy is caught in the net of Mr. Kane, a bounty hunter who sports a freaky
necklace made of werewolf teeth. Giles reminds him that werewolves are really human
beings who only become wolves 3 nights out of the month. Kane says they sense sexual heat,
so Giles and Buffy decide to hit the Bronze to find it. The werewolf does show up, but Buffy
lets it escape, ticking off Kane. Meanwhile, our old friend Angel bumps into Sunnydale
student Theresa Klusmeyer (17) as she walks home alone, and cheerfully tells her he's a
friend of Buffy's. Buffy and Giles hear on the radio that Theresa's been killed and assume
it's the werewolf.
January 13 -
We see the werewolf in the woods transforming back into human form -- it's Oz.
Oz calls his aunt and finds out that his little cousin who had recently bit him is also a
werewolf. He's wigged when he finds out Theresa's dead. Giles has Willow check the
computer to see if any student fits the violent werewolf's profile. But Xander takes a guess it
might be Larry, and goes to the locker room to confront the brute himself. A series of
misunderstandings has Larry admitting he's gay, and thinking Xander is, too. When
Xander and Buffy see Theresa in the coffin, Buffy realizes her friend wasn't mauled -- she
was killed by a vampire. Theresa rises from the coffin to attack Buffy and says, "Angel
sends his love." Buffy fights her but Xander manages to slay Theresa. As Oz prepares for
his last night of being a werewolf, Willow goes to his house to ask him why he hasn't been
all over her. He starts transforming right before her eyes, and chases her out. Kane is
waiting with a gun which has a silver bullet, while Giles wields a tranquilizer gun. As Kane
goes to shoot Oz, Buffy decks him and scuffles with the werewolf herself. Willow shoots it
with the tranquilizer gun. Kane is peeved that a li'l gal like Buffy spoiled his fun, but she
sets him straight by bending his rifle.
January 14 -
Things are a little awkward between Willow and Oz the next day, but they chat and Willow
kisses him on the mouth. It's official: he's a werewolf in love.
(This ep is really iffy. The best time it could take place without seriously messing up the
series order is Valentine's week, but that's taken by Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered.
Hopefully, you can accept that the Oz-Willow / Willow-Buffy scene at the beginning was on
a Friday, with the cut to Cordy and Xander in the car jumping us ahead to Sunday night.
It's either that, or in the Buffy-verse, January's full moon was the 13th instead of the 12th.
Possible I suppose, since I have found that different sources don't always agree on which
day the full moon is.)

                                                                                           38
February 12 -
At night in the cemetery, Xander shows Buffy his V-Day gift for Cordy: a necklace with a
heart-shaped pendant. After cracking a few jokes, Buffy assures Xander that Cordy will
love his gift. She then slays a vampire which rises from its grave, and they continue on with
their conversation.
February 13 -
The next morning, Harmony and her friends are shunning Cordy from their discussion
groups. They mock Cordy for dating Xander, whom they perceive to be one of the biggest
losers in Sunnydale. Elsewhere, Amy asks Willow and Buffy if they plan on attending the V-
Day party at the Bronze. Willow is going to see Oz play in the band, while Buffy plans on
staying home. As everyone leaves and hands in their assignment, Xander notices that Amy
does not have a paper to turn in. To his surprise, he watches as Amy stares at Miss
Beakman, the teacher. Miss Beakman then reaches out her hand, as if she is taking Amy's
paper which doesn't even exist. Amy then turns and leaves. Xander catches up with Buffy
and Willow, telling them that he suspects Amy of messing around with witchcraft. Buffy
and Willow remind him that it was Amy's mother, Catherine, who was the witch, and that
Amy would never fool around with it. Giles spots Buffy and approaches her. Jenny
Calendar sees them and walks over, but Giles brushes her off, saying that he and Buffy are
busy at the moment. In the library, Giles warns Buffy that Angel has a long past of
committing horrid acts on Valentine's Day. He refuses to tell Buffy any specifics, however,
but he does suggest that she be careful. Meanwhile, in the factory, Spike and Angel give
Drusilla their V-Day gifts. Spike gives her a necklace, while Angel gives her a freshly torn-
out heart.
February 14 -
Buffy receives a box of roses, which were left at her doorstep. Buffy opens the box and finds
a card with only one word written on it: "Soon". At the Bronze, Xander sees Cordy and
walks over to give her his gift. After admiring the necklace for a moment, Cordy breaks up
with him. Xander is righteously furious.
February 16 -
At school, everyone seems to know that they broke up. Xander then notices Amy walking
around, so he runs over and tells her that he knows she's practicing witchcraft. With the
upper hand, Xander strikes a deal with Amy: help him cast a love spell on Cordy, and
nobody will have to know that she's a witch. After arguing the idea for a while, Amy
concedes and tells Xander that she needs a personal item of Cordelia's. Xander finds Cordy
near her locker and demands that she return the necklace he gave her. Cordy says it's in
her locker, but when she opens it, she hides behind the locker door so she can remove the
necklace from her neck without Xander seeing. Meanwhile, Buffy walks into the library and
shows Giles the "Soon" card. Buffy demands that Giles tell her everything she needs to
know about Angel and Valentine's Day, so Giles sits her down and proceeds to read various
anecdotes from his books.
In a darkened room, Amy and Xander perform the spell that should cause Cordy to fall in
love with him.
                                                                                            39
February 17 -
However, Xander soon finds out that the spell had no effect on Cordy. He walks into the
library where Buffy is still listening to Giles read his books. Buffy consoles Xander, then
suggests that they spend some time together that night. Buffy's suggestions get increasingly
lurid, but before they get too close, Amy walks in and tells Xander that she needs to have a
word with him. Outside in the hall, Amy tells Xander that the spell didn't work. Xander
could care less know, seeing how his dreams of Buffy and himself are finally being fulfilled.
However, Amy then suggests that they spend some time together later that night, without
the spells and other witchcraft. Xander grows suspicious, and his fears are confirmed when
another girl approaches and asks him to accompany her that night. Xander realizes that the
spell actually worked. However, instead of affecting Cordy, it zapped every other girl in
Sunnydale. Xander goes home to avoid everybody, only to find Willow waiting for him in
his bed. Willow wants to him to take her right there in his bed, and when things get a little
too steamy between them, Xander pushes her off and runs off.
February 18 -
The next day, every single girl in the school ogles Xander as he walks down the hall. He
quickly enters the library and tells Giles everything that's going on. Before Giles can
process the information, Jenny walks in and tells Giles that they need to talk. However, her
attention quickly shifts to Xander, proving that the spell affected not only the girls, but
every single female in town. Giles gets between the two and berates Xander for causing all
this to happen. He then leaves Xander in the library, dragging Jenny along with him. After
they leave, Xander tries to barricade the entrance to the library, but Buffy simply walks in,
wearing nothing but a raincoat. She seductively asks Xander to undress her, but he can't,
for he knows that what Buffy is doing is not out of attraction for him, but simply a result of
the spell. Just then, Amy arrives and tells Buffy to leave. Instead, Buffy punches her to the
floor. Angered, Amy gets up and casts a spell on Buffy, turning her into the small rat. Giles
and Jenny return just then. While Xander and Giles try to catch the rat, Oz walks into the
library and punches Xander for whatever he did to depress Willow. While Xander assures
Oz that nothing happened, the rat escapes through the partly-opened library door.
Realizing that the rat is gone, Giles commands Xander and Oz to find the rat while he tries
to get Amy to reverse the spells. Giles soon determines that Amy must have made a mistake
in the casting that caused Cordy to be protected by the spell instead of affected by it.
In the hallway, Xander notices a fight breaking out. To his horror, he sees a mob of girls
beating on Cordy. The mob is angry at Cordy for breaking Xander's heart. Rushing in
through the love-crazed girls, Xander pulls Cordy out of the pack and runs away with her.
They run outside, only to find Willow and dozens of other girls. Willow is wielding an axe,
for she would rather see Xander dead than with Cordy. While the mobs of girls battle each
other, Xander and Cordy escape through the commotion and end up at Buffy's house. Joyce
lets them in and, after sending Cordy upstairs to get some bandages, starts seducing
Xander. Cordy is sickened by this, so she pushes Joyce outside. Joyce punches through the
door window and struggles to unlock the door, so Xander and Cordy run upstairs and hide
in Buffy's room. Thinking they're safe, Angel suddenly arrives and pulls Xander through
the window and throws him to the ground below. Before Angel can kill him, Drusilla arrives
and protects Xander. While Angel leaves, Drusilla offers immortal life to Xander. Before
she can sink his teeth into his neck, the mob of girls finally track them down. They pull
Xander away from Drusilla and pile up on top of Xander. Cordy runs out and pulls Xander
out from the pile before quickly running back inside. All the girls chase them into the house.
That is, everyone except Drusilla. Angel reminds her that she can't get in without an
invitation. Xander and Cordy run into the basement and lock themselves in there.
                                                                                            40
Meanwhile, Oz tracks the rat into the school basement. The rat is first menaced by a cat,
then approaches a mouse trap. Upstairs, Giles and Amy perform the reversal spells. They
first reverse the spell on Buffy, causing her to transform back to her human self. She
quickly realizes that she is completely naked, so she asks Oz to find her some clothes. While
Giles and Amy work on reversing the love spell, the mob of girls break open the basement
door. Xander and Cordy run downstairs, but there's nowhere to go. Soon, all the girls gang
up on top of them. Finally, Giles and Amy complete the reversal spell, and everybody
returns to normal. All the girls look around, completely confused as to what's going on.
Cordy makes up an excuse that they had just finished a scavenger hunt.
February 19 -
The next day, Buffy thanks Xander for not taking advantage of her the previous day. It
seems that everybody retained their memory of what occurred during the run of the spell.
Xander then bumps into Harmony, who is walking with Cordy and the rest of their friends.
After Harmony mocks Xander, Cordy has had enough. She rips on Harmony and tells
everybody that she can date whoever she wants to date. Cordy then walks over to Xander
and takes his hand. Cordy is horrified by what she's just done, but Xander comforts her,
and the two of them walk off, together again.
(Okay, this one maybe is stretched a bit, because Valentine's Day was on a Saturday and
there's no clear mention of a weekend in the ep. It's hard to believe Buffy sat around all day
Sunday after getting the roses from Angelus, but to fit it into Feb. 1998, that's how it has to
be.)
"Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered"
February 23 -
Buffy wakes up in the morning to discover a piece of paper sitting on her pillow. She
unfolds it to discover a sketch of her face while she was sleeping. Buffy knows that Angel
must have been in her bedroom during her sleep. At the library, Buffy pleads to Giles that
he find a spell that would reverse the invitation into her home. Buffy and Giles then stop by
Jenny Calendar's computer class to meet Willow, who has just been assigned by Jenny to
fill in as class teacher the next day for the first few minutes. As Buffy and Willow leave,
Jenny does her best to apologize to Giles, who insists that Buffy is the one who deserves the
apology. Jenny also gives Giles a book that she has been reading since Angel lost his soul.
That night, Buffy tells her mother during dinner that Angel has been sort of stalking her
lately. Buffy asks Joyce to never invite him into the house. Later, Buffy talks to Willow over
the phone. During their conversation, Willow notices an envelope on her bed. She opens it
and discovers that all the fish from her aquarium have been removed and strung along a
wire, which she slowly pulls out of the envelope. Willow quickly retreats to Buffy's house to
spend the night.
February 24 -
At the factory the next morning, Spike grows increasingly tired of Angel's presence. Their
argument is interrupted by Drusilla, who falls onto the table in pain, for she senses
something going on that may endanger them. What she senses is Jenny's visit to the local
craft shop. Jenny purchases an Orb of Thesulah which she needs to restore Angel's soul.
The shopkeeper warns her that the transliteration annals have been lost for many years, but
Jenny tells him that she's working on a computer program that could translate the text.
                                                                                            41
Giles gives Jenny's book to Buffy and points out the revoking spell that he just found. Buffy
and Willow first help Cordy perform the steps on her car. The three of them then perform
the spell in Willow's house. While there, Cordy notices a piece of paper left on Willow's bed.
Willow unfolds it, then hands it to Buffy. It is a sketch of Joyce, asleep and completely
unaware of Angel's presence. Buffy and Willow race to her house to perform the spell.
Joyce soon pulls into the driveway, where Angel waits for her to get out of the car. Angel
pleads with Joyce to help him get Buffy back, and he eventually mentions the night they
made love. Joyce finally unlocks the front door and enters the house. Angel tries to follow
her in, but a force holds him back. He then sees Buffy and Willow coming down the steps,
and the door is promptly slammed in front of him. Back in Jenny's classroom, Giles walks
in. She tells him that she may have some good news, so Giles invites her to stop by his house
later. Meanwhile, Drusilla visits the shopkeeper after hours and asks him what he's been up
to with Jenny Calendar.
Jenny finally completes her program. She saves the translated text on a floppy disk which
she removes from the disk drive. As she prints out the text, she notices that Angel is sitting
in the classroom. He destroys the Orb of Thesula, her computer, and the print-out. Angel
then chases Jenny through the school halls before finally catching her in front of the second
floor window. In a single instant, Angel snaps Jenny's neck, then drops her to the floor.
Meanwhile, Giles stops by Buffy's house to pick up Jenny's book so he can perform the
revoking spell at his house. Upstairs, Joyce talks with Buffy about her irresponsibility.
When Giles gets home, he hears opera music playing and finds a rose on his door. He enters
and finds chilled wine, glasses, and a note that simply reads "Upstairs". He follows a path of
roses up the staircase, but what he finds is everything but romantic. Jenny's dead body lies
in his bed, and Giles drops the glasses and wine to the floor. Giles stares blankly ahead as
the coroners take Jenny's body out of the house. The cops then ask Giles to come with them
to the police station to answer a few questions. Giles asks if he could first use the phone. As
the phone rings at Buffy's house, Angel watches from outside, through the windows. He
watches Buffy's face as she gives the phone, then slowly collapses against the wall behind
her. Willow immediately bursts into tears, and Joyce runs in to console her. After a while of
recovery, Xander and Cordy arrive to give Buffy and Willow a lift to Giles' house. At this
very moment, Giles stuffs his weapons into a duffel bag and takes off for the factory. Buffy
and the others arrive too late, but they know where he's headed. At the factory, Giles
throws a flame bomb into the middle of the floor, setting it ablaze. Before Angel can run, an
arrow pins him against a post behind him. As he pulls it out, Giles ignites a club in the
flames and proceeds to beat Angel repetitively with it. Finally, Angel grabs Giles by the
neck and picks him up, but Buffy arrives just in time to take over the fight. Their battle
carries on to the catwalk above, but before Buffy can finish Angel off, he reminds her of
Giles, who remains collapsed by the rapidly spreading flames. He then throws Buffy over
the rail, but she lands on her feet and rescues Giles, thus allowing to Angel to escape once
again. Outside, Giles is furious at Buffy for interfering in his fight, but she punches him and
tells him to never leave her alone.
February 25 -
In the computer classroom, Willow takes over as substitute teacher until the new teacher
can arrive. As she arranges Jenny's desk, she unknowingly drops a disk through a crack
between the desk and a file cabinet. There the disk lies, the key to Angel's restoration.
                                                                                            42
March 1 -
Another day, another morning, Giles and Buffy stand over Jenny's grave. Buffy has finally
realized that she is ready to finish Angel.
(Takes place "around Valentine's Day" according to shopkeeper. It would actually feel
more 'right' to have it follow directly from B,B & B but then you'd have to overlook the
gang changing clothes during the middle of the day on the 19th. The tag is hard to place -
it's most likely the 25th when Willow tells Jenny's class she'll be subbing until a new teacher
is found, but Buffy and Giles can't be by Jenny's grave that same day. Pick a day that's
likely to be long enough away for a murder victim to be buried. I went for the following
Sunday here.)
"Passion"
March 9 -
The flu has been spreading around Sunnydale High, and Buffy's one of the unlucky souls
who's got it. While on a routine patrol through the cemetery, Buffy runs into Xander,
Willow, and Cordelia. Before she can get them to go home, Angel appears and attacks
Cordy. Buffy fends him off, but the flu has made her too weak to fight him effectively.
Angel nearly bites Buffy when the others come to her aid and thwart him back with their
crosses. After Angel leaves, Buffy collapses and lies on the ground, unconscious.
The gang brings Buffy to the emergency room of Sunnydale General. Giles and Joyce soon
arrive, and they wait for Buffy to be moved to another room so they could see her. On the
way to room, Buffy realizes that she's going to be there awhile, so she tries to get out,
screaming that she has to kill the vampires. Dr. Wilkinson injects a tranquilizer to calm her
down. Soon, Buffy is asleep in her new room while the others wait outside in the hall. Joyce
tells everyone that Buffy has been afraid of hospitals ever since she saw her cousin Celia die
in a hospital when they were both very young. The group goes home while Xander stays
behind to protect Buffy in case Angel shows up. That night, Buffy is still overcome with her
fever when she notices a young boy standing in her doorway. As the boy walks away, Buffy
sees a tall, demonic man following the boy. He is dressed in black clothes and a black hat,
and his fingers are long and pointed. Buffy gets out of her bed to follow them, but she soon
finds herself in a flashback to a time when she was much younger, walking down a similar
hospital hallway. As her young self walks into a room and approaches the bed curtains,
Buffy wakes up, realizing that she was just dreaming. She then gets out of bed and walks
down the hall. She stops outside of a door from which a body of a recently diseased girl is
being wheeled out of. Buffy eavesdrops on Dr. Wilkinson talking with another doctor, Dr.
Stanley Backer. Dr. Wilkinson is arguing about some kind of experimental procedure that
Dr. Backer has been performing on the children. Buffy then notices two children standing
before her. One of them is the same boy she saw earlier, who tells her that Death is coming
for them, and that he can't be seen by grownups. Elsewhere, Angel walks into the hospital,
holding some flowers for Buffy. Xander blocks his path and challenges him to a fight, but
Angel simply points out Xander's apparent jealousy of Angel for getting to Buffy first.
Angel then turns around and leaves.
March 10 -
The next morning, Buffy's fever has gone down, and the gang pays her a visit. Buffy tells
them about the apparent demon she saw walking the halls, the one that grownups can't see,
but also notes that she may have just been delusional from her fever. She also tells them
about the girl who died and Dr. Backer's experiments.
                                                                                            43
Giles and Willow return to the library to do some research while Xander and Cordy snoop
around the hospital for more info. They find nothing, so Xander decides to stay behind and
watch after Buffy. Cordy is upset with him for his obvious attraction that he still holds for
Buffy, but she later returns with donuts and coffee to keep Xander company. In the
meantime, Giles and Willow concoct a theory that the kids think they're seeing Death, but
they're really seeing Dr. Backer. Willow researches his background, but can't find much to
convict him of anything. Later that night, Buffy sneaks out of her room again. She heads for
the children's ward, where Dr. Backer is preparing to inject a sleeping girl with an
unknown solution. He then hears something, but it is too late, for an invisible force attacks
the doctor, slashing away at his body. The young boy, Ryan, wakes up and watches in
horror as Dr. Backer is slashed to death by the demon. Buffy looks in and sees Dr. Backer
being attacked, but she can't see the attacker. His lifeless body is then thrown out of the
room, and before Buffy can reach it, she is knocked back by the unseen force. She lies
against the wall, unconscious, while Dr. Backer's body is dragged down the hall and out of
sight.
March 11-
The next morning, Buffy tells the gang that Backer is no longer their suspect, then shows
them a drawing that Ryan made of the demon. Joyce arrives and tells Buffy that she's been
cleared to go home, but Buffy makes up an excuse that she's still not feeling well so she can
stay in the hospital and fight the demon. Willow stays to help Buffy investigate Dr. Backer's
office for clues as to why he was killed, while Xander elects to stand guard at the hospital.
This leaves Giles to reluctantly work with Cordy in the library. In Dr. Backer's office,
Willow finds a log proving that Backer was inoculating the kids with the same virus they
were infected with in an attempt to raise their temperature and burn out their fever.
According the log, the process was starting to work, so Backer really was helping the
children all along. At the library, Cordy notices that a picture on the cover of a book
resembles the picture that Ryan drew. She calls Buffy and tells them that the name of the
demon is Der Kindestod. Giles then tells Buffy that Kindestod kills its victims by sitting on
top of them and pinning them on their backs. It then sucks the life out of them somehow.
Buffy suddenly has another flashback to her earlier years. The younger Buffy walks into the
room and opens the curtains, only to see Celia screaming with her hands in front of her, as
if she is trying to push some invisible object off of her. Buffy realizes that her cousin Celia
was killed by Kindestod. After hanging up the phone, Buffy realizes that the only time she
was able to see the Kindestod was when she was still under the effects of her fever. Willow
and Buffy sneak into Backer's office again. Buffy opens the refrigerator and removes a test
tube that contains the same virus strain that Backer was using in his experiments. Willow
dilutes it with water before Buffy drinks it. Sick again, Buffy stumbles to the children's
ward with Willow's help. However, all the children are no longer in their room. Buffy then
sees Kindestod walking around inside the room, then entering a door labeled "Basement
Access". The door is locked, so Buffy needs to find another way to the basement. Dr.
Wilkinson walks into the hallway and tries to get Buffy back to her room, but Buffy pushes
her away, and she and Willow run for it. Two security guards stop them, but Willow throws
an imaginary fit to divert the guards while Buffy slips by. She finds Xander, and the two of
them head down to the basement. They find Ryan pinned to the floor by Kindestod, while
the rest of the children sit together screaming. Buffy fights Kindestod while Xander moves
the others to safety. Before Kindestod can drain Buffy of her life force, she grabs his head
with both hands and snaps his neck, killing him instantly.
                                                                                             44
March 14 -
Buffy is back in the comfort of her own bedroom. Xander and Willow are also there,
keeping her company while she recovers from her fever again. Joyce brings Buffy a letter
that just arrived in the mail. It's from Ryan, and Buffy opens it to find a drawing of Buffy
standing victoriously over the body of Kindestod, it's neck cracked open and blood spurting
out.
"Killed By Death"
March 23 -
A night at the Bronze does nothing to improve the Slayer's morale, as Willow notices when
she sees Buffy reject a guy. Willow tries to help her friend out, but Buffy opts to stop by the
school and see if Giles has any work for her to do. Unbeknownst to her, a boy is fighting
with a girl in the school hallway. He holds up a gun, and the girl tries to leave the scene. The
boy then shouts, "Don't walk away from me, bitch!" Buffy arrives at the school just in time
to stop the boy from shooting the girl. Buffy knocks the gun out of his hand, and the boy
soon returns to his senses. While he and the girl try to figure out what just happened, the
school janitor points out that the gun is nowhere to be seen.
March 24 -
The next morning, Principal Snyder calls Buffy to his office to let her know that he'll be
keeping an eye on her. After he leaves the office for a minute, a book mysteriously falls out
of the bookshelf. Buffy picks it up, noticing that it's a yearbook from the Sunnydale Class of
'55. Meanwhile, Giles stops by the computer classroom, where Willow is still serving as the
substitute teacher. She tells Giles about some of the files and pagan websites she found on
the computer, then gives him a rose quartz that once belonged to Jenny. Elsewhere, Buffy
has a dream in one of her classes that she's in the year 1955. She watches on as one of the
students approaches the teacher. They start to hold hands when someone else interrupts
them. Just then, Buffy wakes up from her dream and notices the teacher writing "Don't
walk away from me, bitch" on the chalkboard. He doesn't even notice it until the students
start laughing. In the hallway, Buffy tells Xander what happened. When they reach his
locker, a rotted arm reaches out of it and grabs Xander, trying to pull him in. Buffy helps
him loose, and the creature disappears. When Giles finds out about this, he deduces that
this is some form of paranormal activity.
Later that night, one of the teachers, Ms. Frank, passes by George the janitor on her way
home. Suddenly, they begin to reenact the same conversation that the boy and girl held the
night before. While this goes on, Giles is working in his office when he hears a female voice
call to him. He believes that it is Jenny's voice. When he walks out to investigate, he sees
George and Ms. Frank outside. Before Giles can do anything, the gun goes off, sending Ms.
Frank over the edge and onto the steps below. George tries to flee the scene, but Giles
tackles him. After the gun is knocked out of George's hands, it suddenly vanishes into thin
air. George has no idea what just happened, so Giles fills him in.
March 25 -
The next day, Giles tells the others that he believes the ghost is Jenny. They don't see how
the pieces fit, but Giles remains set in his belief. In the computer classroom, Willow looks up
any previous shooting victims in the school. She finds a record from 1955, when a student
shot his teacher, then himself. Buffy recognizes the faces from her dream, so she grabs a
1955 yearbook and looks them up. The boy was James Stanley, and his teacher was Grace
Newman. Buffy determines that they were having an affair.
                                                                                           45
However, Buffy feels no remorse for James's fate, for she feels he deserved whatever
punishment there was after shooting Grace. In the cafeteria, Cordy complains about the
upcoming Sadie Hawkins dance when another paranormal event occurs. This time, all of
the food transforms into snakes, sending the entire school population into panic. One of the
snake bites Cordy's cheek before she swats it away. After they evacuate the school, a team is
sent in to clean out the snakes. Principal Snyder talks with his friend on the police force,
Bob. Snyder knows that they're on a Hellmouth, but Bob demands Snyder to control the
situation, otherwise the mayor would have to get involved. That night, Willow sets up a plan
to exorcise the spirit from the school. To do so, Buffy, Xander, Cordelia, and herself need to
chant from different locations in the school at midnight, forming what is called a Mangus
Tripod. Buffy elects to take the center position, since that is where the most danger would
likely occur. After they split up in the school, Willow runs into Giles by the library. He is
trying to contact Jenny's spirit, so Willow leaves him alone. As midnight approaches, Buffy
sees a vision of James dancing with Grace in the band room. Cordelia inspects her wound in
the bathroom mirror, then watches in horror as the whole side of her face turns red and
swollen. Willow is suddenly pulled into the floor by an arm, but she is saved by Giles. Buffy
watches as James's face is replaced by a rotted skull, which tells her to get out.
March 26 -
The clock finally strikes twelve, so the group does the chant simultaneously. However, it
doesn't work like it's supposed to. A swarm of wasps invades the hallways, and everybody
makes a mad dash for the exit. They run to the street, then turn around to witness the
swarm surround the entire school.
At Buffy's house, Giles deduces that it is James spirit which is haunting Sunnydale High. He
is apparently trying to seek forgiveness from Grace, but that can never happen since she
dies before she can possibly forgive him. So, he is doomed to repeat this scenario over and
over again. While they try to figure out a solution, Buffy hears a male voice call to her.
Without telling the others, she sneaks off to the school. The wasps part to allow her access,
and she walks right in. Inside, Buffy meets Angel, who has come to finish things off.
However, James spirit possesses Buffy, and she begins to act out the scenario. Confused for
a moment, Angel approaches and is suddenly possessed by Grace's spirit. It all plays out the
same way, only this time, Grace (in Angel's body) gets up after being shot and falling onto
the steps below. In the band room, James (in Buffy's body) prepares to shoot himself, when
Grace stops him. She forgives him, and they share one last kiss before their souls finally
cross over, leaving Buffy and Angel in an embrace, kissing like they once did in the past.
When Angel realizes what he is doing, he pushes her off and escapes.
Back at the Summers home, Buffy realizes that James never meant to shoot Grace.
Apparently, Buffy and James had more in common than she realized, for they were both
tormented by guilt. Meanwhile, at their new home in an abandoned garden, Angel tries to
cleanse himself from the vile kiss he shared with his enemy. He takes Drusilla out with him
to find some blood, leaving Spike alone. After they leave, Spike rises from his wheelchair
and kicks it on its side, knowing that the time for his comeback is nearer than anyone else
thinks.

April 20 -
The beach is the site for the victory party of the Sunnydale High swim team, and everyone's
celebrating except Buffy. One of the team members, Cameron, approaches the lonely Slayer
and keeps her company. Another team member, Dodd, mocks Jonathan in front of
everybody, so Buffy steps in to stop the foolishness. Dodd and fellow member Gage then
leave the party and walk along the shore. Suddenly, Dodd disappears without Gage even
noticing. He smells a strong odor coming from somewhere, so he decides to return to the
party. He doesn't hear Dodd quietly scream in agony, nor does he notice the scaly creature
walking away from Dodd's remains.
April 21 -
The next morning, Principal Snyder stops by the computer classroom to talk to Willow
about one of her students, Gage. He is currently getting an "F" in the class, and Snyder
encourages her to work his grade into a passing one. Meanwhile, Cameron gives a Buffy a
ride to school, then tries to put the moves on her. She retaliates by busting his nose on the
steering wheel. Principal Snyder sees this and calls the two of them to Nurse Greenliegh's
office. The swim team coach, Marin, meets them there, and they discuss their chances for
winning the state title. In the library, Buffy learns that Dodd's insides were eaten from some
mysterious creature, leaving only his skin behind. Hours later, Xander takes a study break
and heads to the vending machine. He bumps into Cameron, who is on his way to the
cafeteria. Cam notices a foul smell when he enters the cafeteria, and a horrific scream
follows soon after. Xander follows the sound, but he's too late, for all that remains of
Cameron is his skin on the cafeteria floor. Xander then turns around and encounters the
scaly creature that most likely killed Cameron.
Later, Xander explains to Giles and Cordy that the creature got away before he could get a
good look at it. Without Cameron gone, Giles determines the pattern of the killing is
connected to the swim team ranks. Dodd and Cameron were the first and second best
swimmers on the team, respectively. Since Gage is the third best, he would most likely be
the creature's next target. Buffy decides to keep an eye on Gage, while Willow interrogates
Jonathan, who has tried out for the team several times but never made it on. All Willow
learns is that Jonathan peed in the pool. Later that night, Gage confronts Buffy about her
spying on him. She tries to come up with a good excuse, then simply tells Gage what's really
going on. He doesn't buy it, so he turns and walks out. Outside, he meets Angel, who
promptly sinks his teeth into Gage's neck, hoping to turn him into a demon. Buffy arrives
on the scene just in time to witness Angel suddenly withdrawing his fangs from Gage's neck
and spitting the blood out. He tosses Gage's weakened body at Buffy and makes his escape,
all the while spitting out the blood in disgust. Gage believes Buffy now, so he asks her to
walk him home.
April 22 -
At swim practice the next day, Buffy tells Willow and Cordy about Angel's distaste for
Gage's blood. She believes that Gage may have been taking steroids, which might have
turned Angel off. Willow then considers the possibility that the steroids might be what's
attracting the creature. They then find out that Xander has joined the swim team. The
position was open due to the recent deaths, so Xander took it as an opportunity to spy on
Gage when Buffy couldn't. After spending some time in the steam room, Xander gets
dressed and meets Buffy outside of the locker room, telling her that Gage is still inside. She
soon hears Gage screaming and runs inside, where she sees the creature standing in front of
Gage. She gets between the two of them, but something's wrong with Gage.
                                                                                            47
To her horror, Buffy watches as Gage tears away his own skin in agony before emerging as
the same type of creature standing behind her. Gage's former skin drops to the floor, and
he quickly attacks Buffy. The two of them are too much for Buffy, and when her guard
drops, one of them bite into her arm. Coach Marin arrives to pull Buffy out of danger, and
the two creatures escape through a hole in the floor. Buffy and Giles question Coach Marin,
but he denies any knowledge of substance abuse in his team. They can't figure out what's
going on, so Buffy assigns Xander to learn more about the team's drug use while she and
Willow talk to Nurse Greenliegh. However, Nurse Greenliegh is already being led to her
doom by Coach Marin, who won't listen to her pleas to stop the experiments. He drops her
into the sewer below, where the fish creatures quickly feed on her.
In the steam room, Xander learns from one of the other members that the steroids are in
the steam itself. This means that Xander has been exposed to the same substance that
transformed Dodd, Cameron, and Gage. He tells the others that he's already been in the
steam room three times, so Buffy talks to Coach Marin. Eventually, he tells her about
Russian experiments with fish DNA on their Olympic swimmers. He then draws a gun and
orders Buffy to drop into the sewer so his boys could satisfy their "other needs". After
dropping down, Buffy sees the chewed-up remains of Nurse Greenliegh floating in the
murky water. Upstairs by the pool, Cordy mistakes a newly-emerged fish creature for
Xander. She expresses her sorrow for his fate, but Xander shows up again, just in time to
save her from the creature's attack. They return to the library, where Giles has locked up
the remaining members of the swim team. Xander then goes to see Coach Marin, and they
engage in a struggle over the gun. Down below, Buffy fends off the creatures until they
finally surround her from all angles. Xander knocks Coach Marin down and extends his
arm through the hole for Buffy. She leaps up, grabs Xander's hand, and is pulled to safety.
Coach Marin gets up for one last strike, but Buffy is ready this time. She sweeps him off his
feet, sending Marin into the sewer with his swimmers. They converge on him, leaving Coach
Marin with nothing to do but scream. Later, Xander tells the others that he has to get a
blood transfusion along with the rest of the team, hoping that will prevent them from
changing. As they speak, the fish creatures swim out into the ocean, against the current.

May 10 -
Angel watches Buffy from afar as she battles a pair of vampires. She orders one of them to
take a message to Angel, saying that she's taking the offensive. The vampire doesn't comply,
so Buffy finishes him off.
May 11 -
Giles pays a visit to the museum, where a newly-discovered stone artifact has been
discovered. It is a few feet taller than Giles, and it contains some form of text on the side.
Giles asks the man in charge, Doug Perren, if they attempted to open it yet, but Doug didn't
notice the crack running down the side of the stone until Giles pointed it out. Giles then asks
Doug to refrain from opening it until he can decipher the text. At school, Buffy declares to
her friends for the umpteenth time that she's ready to face Angel, despite the fact that final
exams are approaching. Willow offers to tutor Buffy in chemistry during one of their free
periods.
Drusilla, Spike, and Angelus read about the museum's new artifact in the newspaper.
Angelus knows what it is immediately. Back in Sunnydale High, Buffy hopelessly tries to
solve a chemistry problem when she accidentally drops her pencil.
                                                                                             48
It rolls off into the desk and falls on the floor, right next to Ms. Calendar's disk which has
remained their ever since the night of her murder. Buffy pulls the disk out and hands it to
Willow, and pops it into the disk drive to check out its contents. What they find is Jenny's
final project: the curse for the restoration of Angel's soul. Meanwhile, Drusilla, Angel, and
several other vamps go to the museum to retrieve the stone, killing Doug Perren in the
process.
Buffy and Willow show Giles a printout of the restoration curse. Giles claims that the curse
would require a great knowledge of the black arts, and Willow feels that she's up to the
challenge. While everyone talks of Angel's salvation, only Xander is upset, for he feels that
Angel must pay for his murders with his life. Xander gets into an argument with Giles over
Jenny's last wish before telling Buffy that she's willing to forget all about the murders in
order to get her beloved Angel back. Elsewhere, Angel tells Spike the story of a demon
named Acathla. This demon possesses the power to literally swallow the Earth into Hell, but
he was stopped by a knight centuries ago. His body turned to stone with the sword still
embedded in it, then was concealed in the stone tomb and buried deep beneath the ground.
With that, two vampires open the tomb, revealing the body of Acathla inside. Only someone
worthy can remove the sword from Acathla's body, freeing him to reign terror on the
world. Later that night, Buffy finds the claddagh ring that Angel gave to her before he lost
his soul. She goes outside for a walk and encounters Kendra, who has returned to take care
of another dark force in Sunnydale. At the library, Kendra shows them a valuable weapon
that she brought with her. It is a sword that was blessed by the same knight who stopped
Acathla. If Angel succeeds in reviving the demon, it may be their only chance to stop it.
Buffy asks Willow to perform the curse as soon as possible, but they need an Orb of
Thesulah first. Luckily, Giles already has one in his office.
A human sacrifice is brought before Angelus, who promptly feeds on his blood, making sure
to spread some on the palm of his right hand. Angelus then approaches the body of Acathla,
reciting the incantations for the ritual of his revival. Angelus grabs the sword and pulls it
with all his might, but he fails. Spike is amused at Angelus's failure, and Drusilla is very
upset. Angelus then swears that they will turn to an old friend, and then succeed.
May 12 -
Buffy and the others take one of their final exams, unaware that a concealed vampire is
walking down the hallway toward their classroom. The vampire steps into the room, and
smoke begins to rise from her body as the rays of sunlight hit it. She warns Buffy that more
will die if she does not meet Angel that night. As she finishes the message, her body
disintegrates. Buffy tells Willow to perform the curse, leaving Kendra behind to stand
guard. Buffy finds Angel at the cemetery, and they begin to fight. Meanwhile, a group of
vampires invades the library during the restoration ritual. Back at the cemetery, Buffy
realizes that her fight with Angel is merely a diversionary tactic, so she turns and runs
towards the school as fast as she can. While Kendra battles one of the vampires, another
one pushes a bookshelf over, crushing Willow underneath. Xander fights another one, but it
brutally breaks his right arm before he can shake him off. After Kendra slays a vamp, she
attacks another that has knocked out Giles. As they surround her, Cordelia escapes from
the library, while Willow lays unconscious under the bookshelf. Drusilla then enters and
takes on Kendra one-on-one. Kendra is no match for Dru, who defends all of her attacks
before hypnotizing the Slayer into an immobile trance. Drusilla then slashes a cut in
Kendra's neck with her nails. Kendra falls to the ground as blood pours out of her neck.
                                                                                               49
Taking Giles with them, the vampires leave the library only moments before Buffy bursts
into the school hallways. She finally makes it to the library, but it is too late. She runs over
to Kendra's fallen body, but there's nothing she can do. Suddenly, the police arrive to see
Buffy over the body of a dead woman. One of them aims a gun at Buffy, ordering her to
freeze. Buffy's disastrous night has just gotten worse.
Unbeknownst to Buffy and the gang, Faith is called forth as the new Slayer during this time
"Becoming Pt. 1"
Two police officers rush into the library. From the looks of things, they believe that Buffy
has just murdered Kendra. They take her outside, where Principal Snyder arrives with
several more cops. Before one of them can cuff her, Buffy knocks the guy down and flees the
scene. After disguising herself in a coat and black cap, Buffy goes to the hospital and runs
into Xander, who is now wearing a cast on his right forearm. They go to Willow's room,
where she lies motionless in a coma. Cordelia arrives, and Buffy learns that Giles was
neither with her or in the hospital. Giles has been taken to the vampire's mansion hideout,
where Angel hopes to force the necessary info concerning the ritual out of the Watcher.
Meanwhile, Joyce learns from the police that her daughter is suspected of murder and that
she's a fugitive from the law. Buffy goes to Giles apartment to see if he's there, but instead
meets Whistler, who has been waiting inside. He tells Buffy that Angel was destined to stop
Acathla, not revive him. However, Buffy's relationship with Angel changed all that. Buffy
leaves before Whistler can tell her how to stop the demon. Outside, a patrolling officer
recognizes Buffy and orders her to freeze. Suddenly, Spike arrives and beats the cop into
unconsciousness. He wants Buffy's help in stopping Angel so he can have Drusilla back the
way she used to be, in exchange for his leaving town with Drusilla and never returning.
After some hesitation, Buffy decides to take him back to her house so they can plan their
attack. They get there just as Joyce is pulling into their driveway. As Buffy tries to make up
an excuse for Spike's presence, a vampire that has been spying on them attacks. Right in
front of Joyce's eyes, Buffy stakes the vampire spy, turning him to dust. Realizing what she
has to do, Buffy confesses to her mother that she is a vampire slayer.
At the hospital, Xander pleads to Willow for her to wake up. She finally snaps out of her
coma just as Xander says that he loves her. The first word out of her mouth is Oz's name,
who arrives to greet her back to consciousness. Meanwhile, Giles refuses to divulge the
information that Angel needs to properly perform the ritual, so more torture ensues. Back
at the Summers home, Buffy and Spike agree to work together, but only on the conditions
that Drusilla can leave with Spike, and that Giles survives. After Spike leaves, Joyce begs
her daughter to explain everything that's going on. Buffy tells her mom that there's no time
to explain it all, which infuriates Joyce. Joyce doesn't want her daughter to be in charge of
saving the world, to which Buffy responds that she never wanted the duty in the first place.
Joyce tries to restrain her daughter from leaving the house, but Buffy pushes her back
against the kitchen counter. Joyce tells Buffy to never come back should she walk out the
door, but Buffy leaves anyways.
At the hospital, Willow tells the others that she is going to try the curse again. Buffy returns
to the library to retrieve the sword that Kendra brought. Principal Snyder finds her there
and promptly expels her due to all the trouble she's been involved in. After Buffy leaves,
Snyder calls someone to tell the Mayor that he has good news. Meanwhile, Drusilla tricks
Giles by making herself look and sound like Jenny Calendar in his eyes.
                                                                                           50
Giles says that Angel's blood is the key to the awakening ritual. Homeless and expelled,
Buffy has only one path to follow now. She returns to Giles apartment and asks Whistler
how to use the sword. He tells her that only Angel's blood can open and close the vortex to
Hell. With one blow, both Angelus and the demon Acathla would be sent back to Hell, and
the vortex would be closed.
Xander catches up with Buffy on her way to the mansion. She tells him to concentrate on
freeing Giles and escaping. Xander does not inform Buffy that Willow is attempting the
curse again. Inside the mansion, Angel slices his hand and approaches the sword in
Acathla's chest. Suddenly, the ritual is interrupted by Buffy's arrival. Angel doesn't even
notice Spike rising out of his wheelchair from behind. While Spike brutally beats Angel to
the floor, Buffy takes one of the other vampires in the room. During this battle, Xander
unties Giles and gets him safely outside. Spike doesn't get too many hits off before an
enraged Drusilla jumps into the fray, tackling Spike. While they fight, Angel manages to get
back up and run to Acathla. Just as Buffy drives a stake through the vampire's heart, Angel
grabs the sword with his bloody hand and finally pulls it out. Swords in hand, Buffy and
Angel engage in a sword duel. Elsewhere, Willow, Cordy, and Oz perform the curse of
restoration. Suddenly, Willow loses control of her actions and seemingly becomes possessed
by some spirit. Cordy and Oz watch in fright as Willow performs the curse herself in
perfect Latin. Spike subdues Drusilla and takes her with him as he escapes from the
mansion in his car. After the long duel, Buffy finally backs Angel up against Acathla. Just
as she is about to deliver the final blow, Willow completes the curse, restoring Angel's soul
to his body. Buffy lowers her sword as she realizes the change, and the two lovers are finally
reunited. However, it is too late, for Acathla is now awake. Buffy looks over Angel's
shoulder and sees Acathla's mouth creating a vortex to Hell. Angel has no idea what is going
on, so all that Buffy can do is give her lover one last kiss before driving the sword through
his stomach, thus releasing the blood needed to close the vortex and send the two demons
back to Hell. Shocked, Angel reaches out towards Buffy with his right hand, but nothing
can be done now. Buffy watches as the vortex closes around Angel, leaving the demon
Acathla as nothing more than a silent statue once again.
Buffy goes home and packs up her belongings without Joyce ever knowing she had
returned. When Joyce enters the room, she finds a farewell letter from her daughter left on
the bed.
May 13 -
At Sunnydale High, nobody knows what happened to Buffy and Angel. Some believe that
Buffy had to kill Angel before the curse was completed, while others believe that Angel has
been restored and they were taking time off to be alone together. Unbeknownst to them,
Buffy is standing far away by one of the trees, giving her school and her friends one last
look before hopping on a bus. The bus heads out of Sunnydale, and Buffy faces an unknown
future.

September 7 -
Sunnydale Cemetery. Evening. Willow, Xander and Oz try to dust new vampire Andrew
Hoelich but don't quite manage. With the school year beginning the next day, they wonder
if Buffy will ever return.
Buffy is living in a rundown apartment building in LA, still dreaming of Angel and what
she had to do to save the world.
September 8 -
First day of school: Oz has flunked and has to repeat his senior year, Xander and Cordelia's
reunion doesn't go as expected, and Giles gets yet another lead about Buffy's possible
whereabouts.
Buffy, going by her middle name Anne, is a waitress in a diner called Helen's Kitchen. She
serves a couple, Lily and Rickie, and Lily thinks Buffy looks familiar. Buffy leaves work
early.
September 12 -
Buffy sees an old homeless woman on the street repeatedly muttering, "I'm no one."
In Sunnydale, Giles visits Joyce to tell her the latest search was a bust, and is surprised by
Joyce blaming him for Buffy's situation.
Buffy runs into Lily again, who calls her by name and reminds her of their last meeting.
Lily used to be Chantarelle and was involved in a vampire-worshipping cult. (see "Lie To
Me")
An old man bumps into them, saying only, "I'm no one" and then walks into the middle of
the street in the path of an oncoming car. Buffy pushes him out of the way but is hit by the
car. She's unhurt, and as she leaves the scene, she bumps into (literally) Ken, who's handing
out flyers for a shelter called the Family Home.
At the Bronze, Xander decides to use Cordelia as bait to aid in their vampire slaying.
                                                                                            52
September 13 -
Lily visits Buffy at work and tells her that Rickie's been missing for over a day. After
reluctantly agreeing to help, Buffy finds an old man, dead in an abandoned building. He's
got a tattoo identical to one she saw on Rickie. Somehow, he's aged decades in just a few
days. Lily blames Buffy, as if Buffy somehow brought the trouble with her, and leaves,
upset. She meets Ken, who tells her that Rickie is alive and staying at the Family Home. Lily
goes with Ken to the shelter.
Buffy breaks into the blood bank for some further investigation and finds Rickie's file, and
several others, with the word "Candidate" on them for some reason. Buffy finds out Ken
has something to do with it and goes to the Family Home, just in time to see Lily get pulled
into some mysterious pool. Ken throws Buffy into the pool also, which is actually a portal to
another, hellish dimension.
Back in Sunnydale, Xander, Willow, and Oz try to dust the vampire again, this time with
Cordelia as bait. Xander and Cordelia argue and Willow is attacked. The vampire is dusted,
and Xander and Cordelia are once again in each other's arms.
Buffy regains consciousness inside a prison cell. Ken explains where they're at, and how
time advances differently there. A hundred years there is a day on Earth. Buffy realizes the
old people muttering 'I'm no one' are street kids who've been worked in this dimensions
factories until they're too old, then they're tossed back out on the streets of Earth, old and
alone, just days after being taken. Buffy fights back, and eventually gets Lily and some
others back out of the portal, which promptly shuts down.
September 14 -
Buffy decides it's time to go and leaves Lily her apartment, job and the name "Anne."
Joyce opens the door and sees Buffy has come home.
(So now we have Buffy's middle name, and for now, I'm again going with the day after
Labor Day as the start of the school year. I spaced out this episode because I need four
school days for the next episode, which doesn't lend itself as easily to skipping days as
"Anne" does. As noted previously, different sources I've seen can disagree on exactly which
day is the full moon, which is good because my main calendar says that Oz should've been
wolfed out on the night of the 7th, the 3rd night of the moon.)

"The Zeppo"
Buffy goes out to track down Xander and Willow. Buffy's mom has a Nigerian mask from
the gallery; she hangs it in her bedroom.
In a dark alley, Buffy notices a shadowy figure which turns out to be Xander. A vampire
attacks during the reunion, and the rest of the gang arrive, stakes and walkie-talkies in
hand. Buffy stakes the vamp and then the gang take Buffy to see Giles.
September 15 -
Joyce and Buffy go see Principal Snyder, who refuses to readmit Buffy even though she was
cleared of all charges.
Buffy hangs out at a coffee shop where she and Willow are to meet, but Willow doesn't
show.
When Buffy goes home, she meets a new friend of her mom's, Pat. Joyce has invited Giles
and the rest of the gang to dinner to welcome Buffy back.
While getting the good china, Buffy discovers a dead stray cat in the basement. They bury it
outside. That night, after Buffy and her mom are asleep, the mask begins to glow and the
cat emerges from the grave.
September 16 -
Buffy dreams about her and Angel walking around Sunnydale High during the day. She
wakes and goes to the kitchen, and is surprised by the reappearance of the cat. They call
Giles, who brings a cage for the undead feline and notices the mask on Joyce's wall while
he's there. He takes the cat back to the library (where Buffy can no longer go as she's not
allowed on campus anymore) and consults his books.
The Scooby Gang's plans turn Buffy's welcome back dinner into a full blown party, with
Oz's band providing the entertainment. Joyce's friend Pat also shows up, and shortly the
Summers house is packed with partying teens. Buffy tries to talk to Willow, but Willow
avoids her, while denying that she's doing it. Depressed, Buffy overhears part of a
conversation between Pat and Joyce, who comments about how difficult things are with
Buffy back. Between that and her friends avoiding her, Buffy heads upstairs to pack, and
leave once again. Giles finally finds the Nigerian mask in his books, but can't get through to
the house on the phone because the party is so loud the person who answers doesn't know
what Giles is saying.
Hurrying over in his car, Giles hits a man, who turns out to have been a corpse before Giles
ever showed up. All over the town, bodies are shown rising from the dead and heading to
Buffy's house.
Willow finds Buffy packing, and they start to argue. Joyce comes in, too. Buffy tries to leave
but her mom stops her right in the middle of the party and they start to have it out. Buffy
tries to tell them they don't understand, but the fear and worry built up over the previous
three months spill out, and even Xander jumps in.
With everyone attacking her verbally, it's only fitting that the zombies finally arrive at the
house and break in, killing several guests. Buffy, Joyce, Xander and Willow run upstairs
where they find Pat on the floor, while Oz and Cordy hide in a closet downstairs. Willow
realizes Pat is dead. Oz and Cordy venture out of the closet, discovering the zombies are all
upstairs.
They also discover Giles, who's finally arrived. He explains that the mask contains the
power of the zombie demon named Ovu Mobani, or Evil Eye. All the zombies are after it,
and whoever puts it on will become the demon.
                                                                                                54
Upstairs, no one notices Pat rising from the dead until it's too late and she has the mask on.
Buffy tries to fight her, but bright flashes from her/it's eyes stun her. She recovers in time to
take Pat/Mobani out through the second floor window. Realizing the source of it's power,
Buffy rams a shovel into the demon's eyes, killing it and causing all the zombies to
disappear. With their feelings finally out in the open, Buffy and Willow hug.
September 17 -
Giles gets a little rough with Snyder to get him to let Buffy back into school. Buffy and
Willow meet at the coffee shop and talk over their feelings about all that's happened to
them over the summer and accept that they've all had a difficult time of it.
"Dead Man's Party"
September 27 -
A limo pulls into the drive-thru at Sunnydale's Happy Burger restaurant. Inside the limo
are not your ordinary customers, but rather vampires in search of the Slayer. One of them
has cloven hooves in place of hands. On the way to their new hideout, one the vamps, Mr.
Trick, picks up a diet soda... and the drive-thru employee himself. Later that night, Buffy
dreams that she is dancing with Angel in the Bronze. During their dance, Buffy's claddagh
ring slips off her finger and falls to the floor. Angel picks it up and clutches it in his hand, so
tightly that blood starts to pour from his fist. As Buffy watches in horror, more blood seeps
from Angel's chest in the exact same spot that she drive the sword through months ago.
September 28 -
The next morning, Principal Snyder finally re-admits Buffy into Sunnydale High, due to
orders from the school board itself. Buffy needs to follow a few conditions, one of which
being her ability to pass make-up exams for all the classes she missed last school year. A
student again, Buffy visits the library with Willow, where they find a variety of spell
ingredients on the counter. Giles tells Buffy that he needs to perform a binding spell on
Acathla to make sure the demon remains dormant. In order for the spell to work, Giles
needs to know the exact details of how Buffy defeated Acathla and Angel. Buffy lays out the
basics, leaving out the part where Angel's soul was restored. Later that night at the Bronze,
Buffy turns down a dance offer from Scott Hope, a fellow student who's had his eyes on
Buffy for a while. Cordelia points out an interesting couple on the dance floor. As Buffy
watches them dance, she begins to suspect that the guy may be a vampire on the prowl. As
they head out of the Bronze, Buffy and her friends follow them out. Sure enough, the guy is
a vampire. What does take the group by surprise is the girl's handling of the situation.
Instead of screaming and trying to run for her life, the girl proceeds to beat the crap out of
the vampire, stopping momentarily to greet Buffy by name and introduce herself as Faith.
This new Slayer then takes the stake out of Buffy's hand and finishes off the vamp before
heading back inside. While the group listens to Faith's wild stories, Cordelia finally puts the
pieces together and realizes that Faith was called forth in response to Kendra's death. Faith
is unlike Buffy, but she's different than Kendra also. Kendra was always uptight and on the
defensive, while Faith is much looser and a little wild. During their conversation, Faith
informs Buffy that her Watcher is currently at an annual retreat.
September 29 -
Unaware of this Watchers' retreat, Buffy takes Faith to the library to meet Giles, who
apparently has never been invited to any of the retreats. Buffy invites Faith to dinner at her
place.
                                                                                            55
September 30 -
While Buffy takes one of her make-up exams, Xander and Willow give Faith a tour of their
school, pointing out all the hot spots where they brushed with death. Elsewhere, in an
abandoned building, Mr. Trick explains to Kakistos how they could stay in Sunnydale and
still operate around the globe, thanks to the internet. Kakistos has no interest in these
matters. His only goal is to kill Faith, who caused the huge scar running over his right eye.
At the Summers home, Joyce is as impressed with Faith as the rest of Buffy's friends are, if
not more so. Buffy excuses herself from the dining table to talk with her mom in the
kitchen. Joyce suggests to Buffy that Faith could take over her duties as the Slayer, but
Buffy reminds her that it's her job until she dies. Joyce is not happy to hear this, but she's
slowly learning to accept it. After dinner, Buffy and Faith patrol for vampires. During their
patrol, they get into an argument over Buffy's attitude towards Faith and the apparent fact
that she's holding something in. Suddenly, several vampires attack the two Slayers. During
the fight, Faith loses control on one vampire and repeatedly pummels it without even
thinking of finishing the job with a stake. This leaves Buffy at the mercy of the other two
vampires, who have her pinned to the ground. As one of them moves in for the kill, he
mentions a name: Kakistos. Buffy succeeds in breaking their hold and killing one of them,
while the other gets away. She then pulls Faith off of the brutally beaten vampire and dusts
it with her stake. It seems Buffy isn't the only one with personal problems.
October 1 -
Buffy tells Giles about Faith's actions the next morning at school. She also tells Giles what
the vampire said to her, and Giles immediately recognizes the name Kakistos. It's Greek for
"the worst of the worst". Kakistos is a vampire who is so old that his hands have turned
into cloven hooves. While Giles gets on the phone to contact Faith's Watcher at the retreat,
Buffy runs into Scott in the hallway. He makes one last stab at trying to get Buffy out on a
date. Charmed by his efforts, Buffy finally accepts. Scott then hands Buffy a box, saying it's
a gift to represent their friendship. Buffy opens it and finds a claddagh ring inside, exactly
like the one Angel gave to her that night on the docks. Overcome with emotion, Buffy drops
the ring. As it hits the floor in the exact same fashion that it did in her dream, Buffy backs
out of her date with Scott. Giles arrives and tries to help her, but Buffy insists she's okay.
Giles then reveals that Faith's Watcher is not at the retreat -- Faith's Watcher is dead.
Buffy tracks down Faith to a sleazy motel. Buffy informs her that Kakistos is in town, which
causes a look of fear and dread to wash over Faith's face. She immediately starts packing
and starts to head out. Buffy stops her by mentioning her Watcher, who was killed by
Kakistos. They hear a knock on the door, and Faith opens it. They are greeted by Kakistos,
Mr. Trick, and a few of their cohort vampires. Buffy shuts the door and escapes out the
back with Faith. The vampires chase them into a building. Seemingly safe for now, Faith
explains that she witnessed Kakistos murdering her Watcher. Just then, Faith notices a
couple of dead bodies on the floor. Buffy realizes that they didn't escape the vampires, but
were instead driven into the building on purpose. As the vampires start to converge on
them, Buffy and Faith run into the middle of the floor. Buffy takes on several vampires
while Faith goes one-on-one with Kakistos. Paralyzed with fear, Faith can't fight back while
Kakistos grabs her by the neck and repeatedly strikes her in the face. Buffy runs over to
help, while Mr. Trick and a female vampire decide to abandon their master and head out
into town on their own. Kakistos' body is so strong that Buffy's stake has no effect on him.
Faith takes a cue from Kakistos' mockery and picks up a huge pointed beam.
                                                                                            56
Before Kakistos can realize what she's doing, Faith drives it straight through his heart,
causing Kakistos to crumble into dust.
October 2 -
The next day, the Watcher's council approves Giles' request to watch over both Buffy and
Faith until a new Watcher can be assigned to her. Unable to keep her secret any longer,
Buffy tells Giles and Willow the whole truth about what happened that night in the
mansion. She explains that Willow's attempt at the restoration spell worked, and Angel was
cured before Buffy drove the sword through him and sent him to Hell. After she heads out,
Giles tells Willow that there never was a binding spell to perform on Acathla. He made the
whole thing up so that Buffy would finally vent out whatever's been eating at her from the
inside all this time. In the hallway, Buffy finds Scott and revives their plans for their
weekend date.
Later that night, Buffy revisits the mansion where Angel, Spike, and Drusilla once stayed.
Back at the scene where Buffy kissed Angel for the last time, she places the claddagh ring
on the floor and bids her final farewell to Angel. After she leaves, the floor of the mansion
begins to rumble. A bright light appears in the air, and the naked body of a man falls out
from it and onto the floor. He lies there, afraid and shivering. It's Angel, who has returned
from Hell... somehow.

Buffy and the gang have to save the world from the Hellmouth being opened by demon
Apocalypse cult the Sisterhood of Jhe. So major is the danger, they keep Xander out of it,
fearing he may get hurt. Instead, while tooling around in his uncle Rory's '57 Chevy Bel
Air, Xander stumbles into the company of 3rd year senior and practicing psychopath Jack
O'Toole. Jack drags Xander around to various cemetaries so he can raise his buddies, Bob,
Dickie and Parker, from their graves. In the course of robbing a hardware store so they can
'bake a cake', Jack decides to officially initiate Xander into their gang by killing him (turns
out Jack's been dead for 3 weeks after a drive-by) but Xander demures by jumping in the
car and ditching them. In the course of his escape, he happens across Faith, having a tough
time against one of the Sisters. Xander gives her an emergency lift and when they get to her
motel room, she jumps his bones. Afterwards, Xander realizes that the 'cake' ingredients
Jack's gang put together were for a bomb. He tracks them down and finds out the bomb is
in the school's boiler room. While Buffy and the rest fight the fiercest battle of their lives in
the library, Xander offs Jack's zombie pals and gets Jack to disarm the bomb. Before Jack
can retaliate, Oz-wolf devours him. The next day, as the wounded Scooby gang goes over
the events of the night before, Cordelia's barbs fall on deaf ears as a newly confident
Xander Harris walks away from her, smiling.

November 22 - 25
Buffy's Thanksgiving plans are interrupted by Hus, a vengence-seeking Native American
spirit released when the old Sunnydale Mission is uncovered. Hus begins to make the
current residents of Sunnydale (particularly Xander) suffer much as his tribe, the
Chumash, suffered when settlers first came to the Sunnydale region. Angel keeps an eye on
her because of Doyle's vision but doesn't let her know he's in town. Xander does.
"Pangs"
November 26
Buffy goes to LA, supposedly to see her dad but really to see Angel after finding out he'd
been in Sunnydale without telling her. While talking they're attacked by a Mohra demon,
who's blood turns Angel into a living, breathing, non-vampire guy again. After a night of
passion, they fight the demon again and Angel realizes that as a mortal, he's no good to
anyone. He can't fight evil and Buffy can't do her best while worried about him. He goes to
the Oracles and has them reverse time so he can stop the demon without getting its blood on
him. Angel is the only one who remembers his brief time as a human.
Angel: "I Will Remember You"
November 29 - December 2
After Oz has all his stuff removed from his dorm room, Willow gets into a deep blue funk.
She tries a spell to make her will be done, so she can magick herself into not feeling the pain
of loss. It doesn't work quite like planned, but work it does, so that any offhand comment
she makes come true. She blinds Giles, turns Xander into a 'demon magnet' and makes
Buffy and Spike think they want to get married among other things. She doesn't realize
what she's done until D'hoffren, the demon that made Anya a demon 1120 years ago, makes
her the same offer.
(at the end of ep, Xander is helping Giles test his eyesight. He holds up a clock for Giles to
read and Giles says "Five past two. Thursday," giving us an ending day of the week.)

"Hush"
December 13 - 14
An earthquake signals the beginning of the end...again. Three demons are going to open the
Hellmouth unless Buffy can stop them. Meanwhile, Spike is so depressed about his
condition that he's ready to stake himself, until he finds out the implant only keeps him
from harming humans. Demons, on the other hand, are fair game.

January 19 - 22
Buffy's birthday party is strangely uneventful for her. As she and Riley get closer, Giles
begins to feel more out of loop, and ends up drinking the night away with old enemy Ethan
Rayne, who warns him that the activities of the Initiative are upsetting the balance of
things, particularly in regards to something called '314'. When Giles wakes up the next
morning, a hangover is the least of his concerns; Rayne has transformed Giles into a demon,
and no one but Spike can understand a word he says. On the run from both the Slayer and
the Initiative, Giles has to find Rayne and get him to reverse the spell before the Slayer does
her duty on him.
(according to Buffy in "Doomed" she is a Capricorn on the cusp of Aquarius, which works
quite well with January 19th)

Angel: "I've Got You Under My Skin"

Kate responds to a call at a subway station to find that Angel has already killed the demon
involved. Her father is on the scene, too. Kate thinks he's checking up on her. Angel is
surprised to find that the Kwaini demon, a female species that is supposed to be peaceful.
Something or someone on the subway must've set it off. Angel finds out that Kate's father,
Trevor, is involved in something he shouldn't be, demon drug dealers. With Angel on their
trail, the pushers decide to kill Trevor. Angel gets to Trevor's apartment but can't cross the
threshold and can only watch as the bad guys vamp out and kill Trevor. Angel stakes one
vamp but the other escapes just as Kate arrives and sees what happened. Armed to teeth,
Angel and Kate go after the demon running the drugs.
                                                                                             64
Kate can't help but see Angel as just another of the type of creatures who killed her dad and
walks out.
Angel: "The Prodigal"
February 16 - 20
Buffy works closer and closer with The Initiative, a fact which bugs both the Scooby Gang
and Prof. Walsh, who's secret project in room 314 is Adam, a Frankenstein monster-type
creation created out of pieces of various demons, people and cybernetic enhancements.
Walsh gets too uncomfortable with Buffy's presence (and her relationship with Riley) and
sends Buffy on a suicide mission. She tells Riley that Buffy died on the mission, but Riley
isn't convinced as he sees Buffy quite alive on a monitor behind Walsh, promising to show
the professor just what a Slayer is. Riley walks out, leaving a furious Walsh to seek solace at
the side of Adam, who awakes and skewers his "mommy."
Buffy warns the gang of Walsh's treachery and finds out about Adam. Riley is stunned by
Walsh's death and begins to act paranoid and freaky. Turns out that the vitamin regimen
Walsh had the Initiative soldiers on was more than just vitamins, enhancing their
endurance and strength. Riley is suffering withdrawal. Buffy and Riley face Adam inside
the Initiative complex. Adams skewers Riley in the side and pummels Buffy a bit before the
Marines arrive and he bolts. The soldiers take Riley under their care and point Buffy
towards the exit. Spike is having his troubles, too, as the local demon population doesn't
take kindly to his occasional helping of the Scooby Gang dust their brethren.
"The 'I' In Team" / "Goodbye Iowa"
February 24 - 26
Angel stumbles onto a group that captures demons and pits them against each other in
fights to the death for the more "upright" citizens of LA to bet on and enjoy the gladiatorial
carnage. Cordelia and Wesley help save the day and a horde of demons is once again loosed
on LA. One of those 'good news, bad news' type things.
Angel: "The Ring"
February 25-27
As if worrying about Riley locked away in the Initiative infirmary and Adam's continued
killing of whatever he comes across wasn't enough, Faith wakes up and escapes the hospital,
bent on revenge against Buffy. She spies on the Scooby Gang, and catches site of Buffy and
the mostly recovered Riley, who's left the hospital under his own power. Faith goes to
Buffy's home and threatens Joyce but Buffy arrives to save the day. In the midst of the
battle, Faith uses a gadget left to her by the Mayor to pull a body-switch and knocks out the
surprised Buffy, now in Faith's body. The cops haul away an unconscious Buffy while Faith
(in Buffy's body) looks on. Even more plot complications: the Watchers Council has sent a
special team to take the newly-awakened rogue Slayer back to England, but of course they
get Buffy instead. Meanwhile Faith is trying to insinuate herself into Buffy's life. Willow
introduces Tara to her but Tara is powerful enough in the ways of Wicca to realize Buffy
isn't herself, literally. While Willow and Tara do a spell to find out what's going on, Faith
sleeps with Riley. Buffy frees herself and goes to Giles', who doesn't believe it's really Buffy
until Willow and Tara show up and explain. Faith has decided to skip town since being
Buffy, with folks who genuinely care for her, is too much for her. They all see a news
broadcast about a local church taken hostage by seriously deformed men who are
threatening to kill all inside. They're vampires that Adam has talked into facing that which
they most fear - God. Faith goes to fight the vampires and nearly has them all dusted when
Buffy shows up.
                                                                                            65
They fight and Buffy pulls the switcharoo herself, thanks to Willow and Tara's conjuring.
Back in her own body, Faith makes a break for it. While Buffy finds out about what Faith
and Riley were up too, Faith hops a train out of town.
(not only the day of the week but the date mentioned on-screen. thanks Joss!)
"This Year's Girl" / "Who Are You?"
February 28 - March 2
Angel helps out fading actress Rebecca Lowell, who repays him by loosing Angelus in an
attempt to get him to turn her into a vampire so she can keep her youthful looks.
Angel: "Eternity"
March 7 - 9
Schlep-boy Jonathan Levinson is The Man! Thanks to a spell, that is. A spell that makes
him the be-all, end-all of everything, and Buffy and the Scooby Gang his eager hangers-on.
Unfortunately, the spell also produces an evil as bad as Jonathan is good. Realizing the
trouble, Jonathan allows Buffy to defeat the creature and return the world to it's former,
non-Jonathan state.
"Superstar"
March 16 - 17
Buffy and Riley's passion in Lowell House rouses the spirits of the children who used to live
there and were punished severely for any 'unclean' thoughts they may have had. Xander
and Anya brave the house and save Buffy and Riley before their life force is drained
completely away.
"Where The Wild Things Are"
March 19 - 20
Oz returns to Willow, taking her out into the moonlit night to prove he finally has the wolf
under control after travels to Romania, Tibet and other exotic places. Unfortunately, things
are complicated by Willow and Tara's burgeoning relationship, and when Oz realizes
something is going on, he wolfs out and is captured by the Initiative. Riley tries to get the
Initiative doctors to stop their sadistic tests on Oz and is thrown in the brig. Buffy and the
gang launch a rescue mission for Oz and help Riley also, who deserts the project. Oz once
again leaves town, leaving Willow and Tara to see where their relationship will go.
"New Moon Rising"
March 20 - 25
Faith hits LA and is hired by Wolfram and Hart to kill Angel; after torturing Wesley, Faith
breaks down while fighting Angel, urging him to kill her; Angel takes her back to his place
to try and help her but Buffy shows, still steamed about the whole body-switch, sleeping
with Riley thing; during all this, the Watchers special forces team shows up to try and take
Faith back; after Angel and Buffy both risk themselves to help her, Faith turns herself in to
the police and Angel tells Buffy she shouldn't have butted in and to go home.
(Angel says it's a week after Faith left Sunnydale, but that doesn't work with the full moon
needed later for "New Moon Rising", which happens later. My choice was move the phase
of the moon up a few weeks, or move these eps back a few. I moved the eps.)
Angel: "Five By Five"/"Sanctuary"
                                                                                                66
March 26 - 27
Buffy returns to Sunnydale, where Spike and Adam have cut a deal - Spike splits Buffy
from the Scooby Gang and Adam splits Spike from the restraining chip in his head; Buffy
and Riley's best friend Forrest run into Adam in a cave - Forrest is skewered and Buffy
barely escapes with her life; Angel shows up to apologize for the way he treated her in LA
and runs into Riley; Spike's plan works and Buffy leaves the gang in a huff, while the last
part of Adam's plan shows up - in the form of Riley
"The Yoko Factor"
March 27 - 28
While Riley is held captive by Adam, thanks to the chip Prof. Walsh put in Riley's chest, the
Scooby Gang deal with the feelings brought out by Spike. Gradually they realize that Spike
was the one behind the whole mess and get the group back together in time for an all-out
assault on Adam, holed up in the Initiative complex. The gang peforms a spell to imbue
Buffy with the combined power of all the Slayers there's ever been, giving her enough
strength to turn aside Adams attacks and yank his power supply right out of his chest.
Afterwards, they have to fight their way out of the complex, now overrun by a bunch of
cyber-demons cooked up by Adam. They make it, of course, and the Initiative is shut down
for good.
"Primeval"
March 28
Back at Buffy's house after the showdown with Adam, the gang plans an all-night video
marathon since they're all still too wired after the spell to sleep. Of course, once they all get
still in the living room, they're asleep by the time the first movie starts. But their sleep is not
peaceful. A malevolent force stalks them in their dreams. Eventually it comes down to it and
Buffy, and Buffy realizes she's face to face with the very first Slayer. Buffy refuses to fight,
and the all wake up, hale and hearty. (NOTE: this is the first time Buffy's mom meets Riley,
who leaves before the gang sacks out.)
"Restless"
April 4 - 6
A scared girl is being chased down an alley by vampires. The vampires stop short when
they're confronted by a black-clad, heavily armed figure - Gunn and his gang of teen
vampire hunters. Meanwhile, Cordy drags Angel and Wesley to a party hosted by
billionaire software geek David Nabbit. He's being blackmailed and wants to hire Angel.
Seems he went to Madam Dorion's, a demon brothel in Bel Air, and someone took pictures.
Angel confronts the blackmailer and gets attacked by his partner, a demon. Angel defeats
the demon and then is attacked by Gunn's crew. Angel saves Gunn's sister Alonna from
getting killed during the ruckus and convinces Gunn not to kill him. The leader of the
vampire gang Gunn's people are after decides to take the fight to Gunn, and they kidnap
Alonna. Angel goes to meet Gunn again and try to talk them into letting him help. He gets
to them as they're gearing up for a fight with the vamps. Gunn traps him in a meat locker
and they head out to rescue Alonna. When Gunn arrives at the vamp's lair, it's too late.
Alonna is a vampire. Wes and Cordy release Angel and he goes after Gunn, arriving just
after he stakes Alonna. Gunn's gang and the vampire gang are about to go at it but Angel
stakes the vamp leader and convinces the other vampires they'd rather be somewhere else.
Everyone walks away.

April 12 - 15
After dusting a couple of vamps in a warehouse, Angel is attacked by a blind woman that
beats the stuffing out of him and gets away. Cordy and Wesley suspect she's some sort of
assassin and do a computer search. They get a name: Vanessa Brewer, currently on trial for
double homicide and being defended by Wolfram & Hart. As Lindsey is speaking to the
court, Angel walks in and tosses Vanessa's dark glasses to her. She snatches them out of the
air with no problem. Lindsey still manages to get her cleared of the charges. Holland
congratulates Lindsey and tells him to be ready to do it again, as they're sending Vanessa
after some children who pose a threat. Lindsey goes to Angel and asks for help. He wants
out. Angel enlists Gunn's help to get into the Wolfram & Hart building to get the
information on Vanessa's next job. After taking the files, Angel sees a bizarre tube holding a
parchment in the vault and takes it, too, setting off alarms. Holland confronts Lindsey
about his betrayal, but instead of having him killed, offers him a few days off to deal with
his crisis of faith. He helps Angel save the children - all seers. Wesley translates some of the
text on the parchment Angel found. It's the Prophecies of Aberjian. Some of it also
mentions the vampire with a soul. When Lindsey goes back to Holland, returning the stolen
discs (after making a few copies to keep himself safe from the company) Holland offers
Lindsey his job, with a "thundering raise and ungodly benefits." Lindsey accepts.
Angel: "Blind Date"
April 17 - 18
Cordy tells them that Lindsey was promoted while Wesley tries to translate more of the
prophecies about Angel. David Nabbit shows up wondering if they've seen any cool demons.
He wants to 'hang.' Wolfram & Hart call Voca forth, and they need to get the scroll back
from Angel for the raising. Cordy is put in the hospital with visions that won't stop and
Wesley is in the office when it blows up. Angel goes to the Oracles for help but they're dead.
Voca got to them first. During Angel's battle with Voca, Lindsey's hand gets cut off, but not
before the raising is complete. Holland tells Lindsey that the senior partners are impressed
with Lindsey. And thanks to the raising, they now have a powerful weapon against Angel -
Darla.

August 21 - 23
Buffy comes face-to-face with the legendary Dracula, who makes Buffy face up not only to
her Slayer heritage, but her actions since the gang performed the spell and brought forth
the first Slayer. Xander becomes Dracula's slave, luring Buffy to his mansion. After a fierce
battle, Drac is defeated but not permanently. Buffy tells Giles that she wants to learn what
it really means to be a Slayer and that she wants him to be her Watcher again, then her and
Riley plan on going to the movies. It would be almost the perfect end to a perfect day,
except as she gets ready to go out for the night, Buffy's mom tells her to take her little sister,
Dawn, with her.
"Buffy vs. Dracula"
August 30 - September 1
Buffy is trying to get into full Slayer training mode, not easy while also babysitting Dawn.
Dawn tags along with Buffy and Giles to the magic shop in Giles' new BMW. Willow and
Tara join them just in time to find out the store has been ransacked and the latest owner,
Mr. Bogarty, killed. They make Dawn wait outside while they investigate. She's accosted by
a crazy man who tells her she doesn't belong. Tara goes out to keep her company while
Giles, Willow and Buffy look around. While checking the paperwork to try and determine
what was taken, Giles realizes how much money there is to be made in the shop, assuming
he's not killed. They also discover a cheap unicorn statue was taken. Turns out it was
Harmony's "minions" - Brad (who got the unicorn for Harmony), Cyrus, Peaches and
Mort- that attacked the shop. She's out to be a full-fledged Slayer-killer. Tara talks with
Willow about Dawn and how she feels left out while they're setting up their dorm room for
the coming semester. Xander and Anya take Dawn Patrol (meaning, babysitting) while
Buffy and Riley do vampire patrol. Harmony and her minions go to Buffy's house to call
Buffy out, but of course she's not there. Xander enjoys taunting them from the safety of the
doorway and Harmony makes cracks about how easy it was for Dracula to put Xander
under his control until Dawn gets mad and yells at Harmony to "come inside and say that!"
She does, and after a short struggle with Xander is forced out of the house. Buffy is furious
that Dawn slipped and invited a vampire inside, especially Harmony who Buffy wouldn't
have had over even when she was alive. While Xander tries to calm Buffy down, and upset
Dawn runs out the back door. Anya goes out to bring her back in when Harmony's minions
attack. Anya is knocked back into the house and hurt. Dawn is abducted. While Xander and
Riley take Anya to the hospital, Buffy goes to Spike to find out where Harmony is hiding.
Harmony's minions get tired of her plans and vote (except for Brad who abstains) to kill
Harmony, eat Dawn and then deal with Buffy when she shows. Buffy shows sooner than
planned, and takes out the minions while Harmony escapes. The next day the gang is in the
magic shop, which Giles has decided to take over. It'll give the gang a nice spot to do
research and there's even a spot for Buffy to use in back for training.
"The Real Me"
September 19 - 22
The gang are in Xander's basement abode watching bad kung-fu movies when his parents
come home and argue quite loudly upstairs.
That's the final straw and the next day, Xander starts apartment hunting. Meanwhile, a
demon called Toth is after the Slayer. It shows up at the magic shop as Giles is trying to get
stuff sorted out, but leaves when it realizes Buffy isn't there. Giles notes it has an odor and
the gang go to the dump to look for its hideout.
                                                                                            69
They find it and during the fight, Xander is hit by a bolt from his staff. While the gang rush
to Xander's aid, Toth disappears. Groggy but okay, Xander lets them lead him away.
The next morning at the dump, Xander wakes up from where he was blasted by Toth.
When he gets home, his door is locked. He looks in the window and is startled to
see...himself! An exact double, only somewhat more neat in appearance, is in his home.
Xander follows this double and is distressed to see how well it lives his life. It even gets a
promotion at Xander's construction job. Meanwhile, Buffy's mom starts to have headaches,
which Buffy and Dawn each blame on the other's actions. Xander watches in dismay as his
double not only manages to rent the apartment Xander had been looking at the day before
(and can afford now thanks to that promotion) but also has the manager lady coming on to
him. Then the double calls Anya and tells her to come over. This is more than Xander can
take and he attacks the double. He's promptly knocked flat. He heads to Giles' apartment to
get help, but the double has already thought of that and is telling Giles, Buffy and Riley that
there's a double out there. Buffy tells the double not to worry. She'll take care of the fiend
with Xander's face. Xander high-tails it to Willow and Tara's dorm room. He convinces
Willow he's really Xander (not hard since she didn't know there was another Xander
around anyway). They decide the blast Toth hit Xander with must've allowed Toth to take
Xander's form. Buffy, Giles and Riley come to the same conclusion with the Xander-double.
Buffy prepares to go on a search-and-destroy mission for the Xander duplicate. Xander
starts to think maybe he should just give up and let the double have his life since everyone is
treating it better than they treat him. Then he remembers it had called Anya and he can't
let it near her because he needs Anya. He goes to her place but she's already gone, so he digs
out her gun. Xander arrives at the new apartment just as Anya and the Xander-double start
to get clingy. Willow goes to Giles' and tells them about Xander and they realize that
Willow had the real Xander and they had the double. But then Giles realizes that neither of
them had a double. He's studied some books and found out that Toth's staff is a ferula-
gemina, which splits a person into two distinct personality types - one of the person's
strongest traits and one of their weakest. Toth evidently planned to split Buffy and kill the
weak one, because once one dies, they both die. Back and the Xander-double's apartment,
Anya has sided with strong-Xander, who's ready to kick weak-Xander's tail until weak-
Xander pulls a gun. Buffy and the others arrive in time to keep Xander from killing himself,
and Toth arrives shortly after that. After a short scuffle, Buffy kills Toth. At the magic
shop, Willow does the spell to break Toth's spell, thereby rejoining the Xanders (over
Anya's request that they wait until she's had a chance to have sex with the two of them -
after all, if they're both Xander it wouldn't be cheating). The next day, the gang helps
Xander pack up his stuff - after all, he still has the promotion and the apartment. During a
moment alone, Xander and Riley talk with uncommon seriousness. Riley sees how much
Anya really digs Xander, and tells Xander how much he's into Buffy but makes the startling
announcement: "But she doesn't love me." Xander is speechless.
(Anya is still wearing a sling after her encounter with Harmony's minions in "The Real
Me".)
"The Replacement"
October 17 - 19
Buffy's nightly patrol is interrupted by Riley patrolling alone and Spike just causing
trouble. Buffy is a little miffed because she doesn't like Riley going out by himself.
The next day Buffy and Willow head to the magic shop where Xander, Anya and Tara are
helping Giles get the place ready for a grand re-opening. Giles leads Buffy into the back
room where she's tackled. By Riley. Her shock at seeing him is overshadowed by her shock
at seeing the room. It's a full-fledged gym for her to train in. Spike's evening of watching
Dawson's Creek is interrupted by Harmony who's certain Buffy is after her.
                                                                                            70
In the morning, Joyce is fixing breakfast for herself and Dawn when she suddenly gets
dizzy. She looks at Dawn and says "who are you?" before passing out. Dawn dials 911.
Buffy and Riley make it to the hospital and Dawn, who introduces them to an intern named
Ben. While Buffy talks to Ben, Dawn plays with a stethescope, listening to heartbeats. When
she gets to Riley, she hears his heart beating like a jackhammer. A doctor examines Riley
and doesn't want him to leave the hospital but can't force him to stay. Buffy is concerned
but Riley tells her his heart is just different after all the experiments Prof. Walsh had done
on him. The hospital lets Buffy's mom go, so they all go back to the Summers' home. Buffy
is still worried about Riley but doesn't know how to get in touch with the government folks
who may be able to help until Dawn gives her an idea. She goes to Riley's and picks up the
phone. "Riley's in trouble," she says. "He needs help."
The next day while Riley is playing basketball, he's visited by some old Initiative buddies
who try and get him to come in for an operation to help undo all that Walsh had done to
them. Riley decks them and runs off. They go to Buffy and tell her that she needs to get
Riley to the hospital where they have a doctor on call, and get him there FAST. At the
magic shop, Buffy is frustrated, not able to find Riley. They decide he may be in the
Initiative caves and Buffy goes to Spike since he's so familiar with the caves. While
Harmony hides, Buffy lays out the deal to Spike. He gets Riley to the government doctor -
she pays him. At the hospital, Dr. Overheiser finally has a patient but not who he expects.
Spike and Harmony show up so they can get the doctor to finally get the chip out of Spike's
head. Despite the doc's protests that he can't do it, Harmony, still in her 'super-villian'
mode, forces him to operate on Spike's brain. Buffy finds Riley in a cave, methodically
punching the rock wall and feeling no pain. He doesn't want to undergo the operation
because he doesn't want to be normal again. He feels Buffy won't stay with him if he was a
regular guy because her last boyfriend (Angel) wasn't exactly Joe Normal either. Buffy
convinces Riley that's not the case and that she wasn't with him just because he had super-
powers. They go to the hospital and find out that Spike and Harmony have taken the
doctor. The doctor says he's done and the chip is out, and just in time as Buffy arrives.
Spike attacts her with glee, then reels back in pain. The doc lied. Spike and Harmony head
for the hills and Buffy gets the doctor to operate on Riley. Meanwhile - back in his crypt,
Spike is visited by Buffy. She's finally going to kill him and he's finally ready for her to do
it. He tells her to go ahead and end his torment. She starts to stake him but hesitates. They
stare into each others' eyes for a moment before Spike takes her in his arms and they kiss
passionately. Spike tells her he loves her. Then wakes up next to Harmony with a start. "Oh
god, no," Spike moans.
"Out Of My Mind"
November 3 - 5
After dusting a vampire outside a warehouse, Buffy's caught by a night watchman who tells
her to move along and take her glowing ball with her. Buffy doesn't have any idea what it is,
but takes it anyway.
The next day, Buffy tries to make her mom breakfast since the doctors still don't know
what's wrong with her. Then at the lackluster grand-opening of the Magic Box (Giles'
magic store) she puts it to the group to try and find out what it is. They don't know, but it
Giles suspects it's paranormal in origin because it's so shiny. Riley suggest they go back out
that night but Dawn tells him no, Buffy said Riley couldn't patrol because she's worried
about him getting hurt, which doesn't set well with Riley at all. Or Buffy, for that matter.
Buffy and Dawn go back home and find Joyce in pain. Buffy heads to the hospital
pharmacy and again meets Ben the man-nurse. In the hospital a crazy man is wheeled past
on a gurney. It's the night watchman from the night before, when he wasn't crazy.
                                                                                             71
He sees the drugs in Buffy's hand and tells her it doesn't work and that "they come through
the family!" Back at the factory, a Czech monk is trying to do a spell with a map of
Sunnydale but something is after him. The Beast. The giant steel door is struck repeatedly
and finally breaks down. The Beast enters. It's an extremely attractive lady in a tight red
dress.
The next day the Magic Box is brimming with customers. Buffy tells the gang what the
watchman said, that whatever is wrong with her mom is supernatural and she's going to
hunt it down and kill it. The Beast is torturing the monk, looking for the Key, but he won't
tell her anything. Anya and Willow end up helping Giles as the Magic Box is being overrun
with customers. Anya shows a surprising ability at the cash register and knows her magic
stuff so Giles hires her to help out. Anya suggests they try out Cloutier's trance to see spells
to find out what's happening to Buffy's mom. Buffy goes home and prepares to get all
trance-y, letting Riley light the magick incense and pour the spooky sand so he won't feel
cute and weak and kitteny. But the spell has to be done alone so he leaves her, telling her
he's okay with not being super-guy anymore. Dawn wants to know what Buffy's doing but
Buffy yells at her to go do whatever she wants but just go! Dawn is dejected and goes to her
room. Once in a trance state, Buffy goes out and walks around the house and sees her mom
going out. Looking for some sign of the magic affecting her mom Buffy sees nothing unusual
until a family portrait catches her eye. In the photo of her, Dawn and their mother, Dawn's
image is fading in and out. Another photo reveals the same thing. Buffy goes into Dawn's
room, and sees it flicker in and out, replaced by an image of the room full of nothing but
boxes. Dawn finally gets her attention, asking Buffy what she's doing in her room. "You're
not my sister," Buffy realizes. Giles calls, breaking the moment. He tells her the glowing orb
is a Dagon Sphere - a protective device to ward off That Which Can Not Be Named. Buffy
goes out to check out the factory again and finds Spike outsider her house. He tells her he
was just passing by, but after he leaves she notices a dozen or so cigerrette butts behind the
tree he was standing at. At the factory, Buffy finds the monk. She starts to free him but the
Beast (still looking and acting like Claudia Christain in "Hexed") attacks. Buffy tries to
fight but is absolutely no match for the powerful woman, who seems more annoyed by
Buffy's punches than anything else. Buffy manages to get the monk free and jumps out the
window. The Beast stomps her foot petulantly and brings the whole warehouse down on her
head. The monk is half dead. He tells her about the Key - that it's a portal and they have to
protect it from the Beast. How it was energy until the monks gave it form and sent it
someplace safe. Buffy realizes he's talking about Dawn. The monks invented everyone's
memories of Dawn, knowing the Slayer could protect her, since as Dawn she has no power.
And as far as Dawn knows, Buffy really is her big sister. Buffy makes it back home and goes
to apologize to Dawn for upsetting her. Together, they sit and worry about their mother.
"No Place Like Home"
November 5 - 7
In their dorm room, Tara tells Willow she doesn't feel useful to the group. They wonder if
Buffy found out anything at the factory. While at Buffy's house, Buffy tells Giles what she
did find out - that Dawn not only isn't her sister but isn't even really human, though she
thinks she is. Buffy also tells him about the powerful young woman. They agree to keep
Dawn's true nature a secret from the rest. Giles suggests sending Dawn away to Buffy's dad
until they deal with the woman, but he's in Spain living with his secretary. At the site of the
factory, the woman bursts forth from the ruins. Now she's mad.
Back at UC Sunnydale, the gang helps Buffy pack up her stuff. With Joyce sick and Dawn
to take care of, Buffy is moving back home to Revello Drive. Willow reminds the gang to be
at the Bronze the next night for Tara's birthday party. At the hospital, intern Ben notes the
arrival of another mental patient. Another one with no previous history of trouble.
                                                                                             72
At the Magic Box, while researching the new big evil in town, Xander and Buffy wonder
what to do about a gift for Tara, since they really don't feel they know her. Meanwhile, at
Spike's crypt, he's having sex with Harmony but thinking about Buffy. Back at the shop, a
customer is joking about the gang using the magic stuff to turn folks into frogs when Willow
and Tara walk in. Tara stops, stunned. The customer is her brother Donny. And he's not
alone. Tara's dad and her cousin Beth are in town too for the birthday. Buffy goes home
and stops Dawn from going out across the street to Melinda's. Riley gets upset with Buffy
for not letting him get involved with what's going on and leaves in a huff. At the dorm, Tara
goes to her room only to be surprised by her dad, early for their afternoon meeting. He's
come to take her home. He'd hoped she'd dropped the witchcraft but now that she's turning
twenty... That's the same age Tara's mother was when... Apparently, it was bad, and now
it's going to happen to Tara. He calls it evil and tells her they're taking her home in the
morning. The evil woman has a Lei-Ach demon captive and tells it to get it's friends and kill
the Slayer. Tara sneaks to the magic shop and performs a spell on the others. Riley is
sulking at Willy's. A blond named Sandy sits next to him and he buys her a drink. She
offers to go someplace with him, but he tells her he doesn't go out with vampires. At Spike's,
Harmony comes in all happy because she's heard about the Lei-Ach demom's quest to kill
the Slayer. Spike leaves, telling Harmony that he's going to watch. Cousin Beth confronts
Tara and gets mad when Tara says she's not going back home with them. Beth also realizes
Tara's done some sort of spell so Willow and the gang won't see what she really is come her
birthday. At the Magic Box, the Lei-Ach demon arrives, but thanks to Tara's spell nobody
can see it. The demons attack Buffy in the training room, but she can't see it either. Spike
arrives and joins in the fight. He can see the demons just fine. Tara arrives and the store
and sees what is happening because of her. She quickly does reverses the spell and Buffy
takes the demon out. Tara's dad shows up to take Tara away, but she doesn't want to go
and the gang stands behind her, because she's family. Tara's dad tells them they'll be sorry
because she's evil, but can't tell them what kind of demon she is. Spike gets tired of the
arguing and punches Tara, resulting in the chip in his head causing him pain. Nope, Tara's
no demon.
The gang celebrate Tara's birthday party at the Bronze.
"Family"
November 15 - 16
Buffy is fighting a vampire in the cemetary (what's new?) when it suddenly gains the upper
hand and she finds her stake buried in her own stomach. Luckily Riley shows in time to
drive the vampire off and get Buffy back home, where he dresses the wound. They hide it
from Buffy's mom, but tell Dawn so she'll help Buffy with the chores until her Slayer-
healing powers do their thing. Riley says he'll finish the patrol, but Buffy makes him
promise to take the gang with him. It's not the best idea, as Riley tries to be all stealthy and
Willow, Anya and Xander totally don't.
At the Magic Box, Buffy wants to research past Slayers to find out what happened to them
and why they lost that last fight. Unfortunately there's no details. Giles supposes most
Watchers find it too painful and there's no one else left to tell the tale. Except there is, and
Buffy goes straight to the source - Spike, who's killed two Slayers on his own. Spike gets
Buffy to take him to the Bronze and buy the drinks (and pay him) to tell her how he did it.
Riley and the gang find the vamp that nearly killed Buffy. It goes into a crypt and Riley
realizes it's a nest. Too many of them. He tells the gang they'll wait until morning when the
vamps are sleeping and the gang can be better armed. Meanwhile, Buffy and Spike are
playing pool while Spike relates his tale. Riley sneaks back to the crypt without the gang. He
stakes the vampire that stabbed Buffy then blows the rest up with a grenade. In the alley
beside the Bronze, Spike continues his story as he and Buffy spar.
                                                                                             73
He gets into it, the tension between them increasing as Spike challenges Buffy to a 'dance.'
But Buffy tells Spike that he's beneath her, just as Cecily did all those years ago and for a
moment, he's not Spike anymore, just lonely, hurt William. The moment passes, and Spike
is all murderous rage again. He gets a shotgun and takes off after Buffy. Harmony tries to
stop him, reminding about the chip, but he figures while he'll have a headache for a few
hours, Buffy will be dead longer. Buffy arrives home to find packing for an extended
hospital stay. Turns out the 'nothing' she's been dealing with for the past few weeks might
not be nothing after all. Buffy stays brave for her mother, but later goes out and sits on the
back step crying. Spike arrives with the shotgun and is ready to kill her but she senses him.
Looking at her, sitting alone and crying on the stairs and looking so small, Spike can't bring
himself to do it. He sits next to her on the step, hesitantly patting her back to offer some
comfort. She lets him, and they sit silently together.
"Fool For Love"
November 17
Buffy and Dawn anxiously wait for Joyce's CAT scan to be done while at the Magic Box the
gang are looking over the new phone book with Gile's ad. They also tell Giles about how
Riley went back and blew up the vamp nest on his own. They also need to research this
mysteriously powerful evil woman and find her lair. Meanwhile, in her lair (which is
actually a rather nice apartment) Glorificus - Glory for short - is trying on shoes and
talking to a demon named Dreg who's brought her a new spell. All she needs is to pick up a
few items from the local magic shop. Riley drops by Buffy's house. The door is slightly open.
Inside, he doesn't find Buffy but does find Spike pawing through her stuff. Riley throws
Spike out, but not before Spike makes a few comments about how Buffy likes the dangerous
type and how much that's not Riley. Spike also happens to know where Buffy is at, a fact
she didn't tell Riley. Riley heads to the hospital to check on things. After the CAT scan, Dr.
Isaacs wants to operate. They've found a shadow and want to do a biopsy. Researching the
woman is going nowhere. Since the Dagon Sphere was created to protect against That
Which Can Not Be Named, they begin to wonder if she's so old she predates language.
During the researching process, Giles is distracted by customers purchasing items. The
doctor finishes the biopsy and while the results aren't in, he tells Buffy that they did find a
tumor and it could begin to affect Joyce's behavior. He starts quizzing Buffy on a variety of
things but she's having trouble digesting it all. Intern Ben arrives and tells the doc he's
needed elsewhere. He's not, but Ben wanted to rescue Buffy. She heads to the magic shop
after asking Riley to look after Dawn. At the shop, Anya gets upset because Giles sold
someone a Khul's amulet and a Sobekian bloodstone. Giles doesn't see the problem at first.
While the Sobakites were an ancient Egyptian cult, heavy into dark magic and the Khul's
amulet is a transmogrification conduit, he figures the Sobekian transmogrification spells
were lost thousands of years ago. Also, whoever used them would have to be extremely
powerful and the young woman he sold them to...then it hits him. Riley takes Dawn to the
carousel where she had her tenth birthday party right after they moved to Sunnydale.
Dawn talks to Riley about Angel and how Buffy used to cry all the time. How Buffy doesn't
get anywhere near as worked up over Riley as she did over Angel. Dawn thinks it's a good
thing, but Riley takes it as another sign that their relationship isn't what he'd like it to be.
At the shop, Buffy tells the gang she wants to do a spell to heal her mother but Giles tells
her it's not really a good idea. And reluctantly, they tell her about selling the magic items to
Glory. But they have an idea what she has planned. She's going to create a monster out of a
cobra. Glory and Dreg go the zoo for a snake. Buffy arrives but can't stop the spell. Glory
pounds her again then sends the new snake-monster on its mission - find the Key - after
Buffy staggers off. Buffy goes back to the hospital to be with her mom while Dawn goes to
the Magic Box after school and Riley goes back to Willy's and drinks.
                                                                                            74
He's joined by the vampire Sandy again. He goes with her this time, and lets her feed on
him for a moment before staking her. Meanwhile, snake-monster is slithering around
Sunnydale searching for Dawn. It checks out the churches and other Holy places first, then
starts to home in on the Magic Box. It burst in and goes right to Dawn, getting a good look
at her before heading back out. Buffy chases the snake down and manages to kill it before it
gets back to Glory's place. Buffy takes Dawn to the hospital so Joyce can tell her what's
going on. Riley is there (wearing a turtleneck) and wants to comfort Buffy. Wants her to let
down her guard but she can't. She goes into her mom's room and shuts Riley out.
"Shadow"
November 19 - 23
Buffy and Dawn are staying with Joyce in the hospital. She's scheduled for surgery in a few
days. Xander, Giles and Willow are taking care of the patrolling and fighting vamps.
Willow actually manages to stake them both, after a big fight. They wonder where Riley is.
He's in some dark warehouse looking place letting some vampire chick drink blood out of
his arm. Willow drops by the hospital with gifts and is there when Joyce has a short
outburst. Buffy tells her the docs told her to expect such sudden outbursts due to the tumor
pressing on her brain. Outside the hospital room, Willow, Dawn and Buffy are accosted by
the night watchman from Glory's factory. He's still nuts but his family is taking him home.
He sees Dawn and starts raving about no one being in there. Later, Willow is on the dorm
roof with Tara star gazing. They see a meteor crash in the woods nearby. The night
watchman approaches the crater, still mumbling, and is attacked by something. Then the
thing shows up at the hospital where Buffy and Dawn are talking Dr. Kriegel into letting
them take Joyce home to rest up before the surgery. He relents. Willow and Tara get Anya,
Xander, Giles and Riley to go with them to check out the meteor. They find it a hollow shell
and find the guard's body and realize they have something new to worry about. Riley
checks out the scene while the others go to do research. Riley calls in his government
buddies. In the hospital psychiatric ward, the thing from the meteor attacks one of the
patients, spitting goo into his face. The creature watches Buffy and Dawn take Joyce out of
the hospital. At home, Joyce keeps having her outbursts and saying nonsense or hurtful
things to Buffy and Dawn. They put her to bed, and she again looks at Dawn and calls her a
thing and tells her not to touch her. Buffy tries to explain to Dawn that Joyce doesn't really
know what she's saying and that she doesn't remember it later. The rest of the gang are in
the university library astronomy section trying to find out info about their 'killer snot
monster from outer space.' They realize it's a Queller demon - called forth to quell (or, ya
know, kill) the mentally ill. They call Riley who's already on it. His team has tracked the
demon to the hospital where there are five corpses in the psychiatric ward. Back at the
Summers home, Joyce is ranting in bed and Dawn can hear her. She tries to block it out.
Buffy is downstairs doing dishes and crying softly. What they don't know that at least part
of Joyce's rant is due to the demon hanging from the ceiling above her bed. When the
demon finally attacks and Joyce screams, Dawn runs into her room and sees the demon.
Dawn screams for Buffy and she engages in a cat-and-mouse hunt for it in the house,
running into Spike in her basement along the way. They fight the demon and after Buffy
kills it, Spike gives her a hand up. Riley and his men come in just then and he sees Spike
and Buffy holding hands. At the hospital, the demon Dreg confronts intern Ben and asks
him why he summoned the demon. He replies he's just cleaning up Glory's mess like he's
always done.
Before her operation, Joyce gets Buffy alone for a moment and asks her about Dawn.
During her fits she realized that Dawn wasn't really hers, but that she's important. Buffy
tells her it's true. Joyce says they need to protect Dawn, then the nurses take her away.

November 23
After the surgery, Dr. Kriegel tells Buffy he thinks everything will be fine. Anya and
Xander watch Dawn at Xander's new pad so Buffy and Riley can "boink." Spike watches
Buffy and Riley together and then sees Riley sneak out. Spike follows him.
Buffy is with Joyce in the hospital. Some of Riley's commando buddies pick up reports of
activity in Belize. Graham suggests they get Riley to join them. That night, Buffy is
awakened by a noise. She thinks it's Riley but he's not there. Instead, it's Spike, telling her
he has something she has to see. He leads her to a rundown warehouse with a lot of people
and vampires. The people are letting the vamps feed off of them. They go upstairs to a room
and Buffy sees Riley letting a vamp drink his blood. Buffy runs back home. Riley goes back
to his place and finds Graham and Major Ellis waiting. The invite him on the Belize
operation.
At the Magic Box, Buffy enters in a huff. She tells Giles about the nest where people were
paying vamps to feed off of them. The gang is shocked but Giles has heard of such a thing
before, explaining that some people get off of the danger. Buffy is out to destroy the place
with surprising (to the gang) vehemence. Leaving Anya to watch the store, they head out.
When they arrive at the warehouse, the place is empty, the vampire nest having cleared out
after the Slayer's visit the previous night. An angry Buffy sets the place on fire. An angrier
Riley pays a visit to Spike. He stakes Spike. Spike is shocked that he doesn't burst into a
cloud of dust, but Riley is using a plastic stake. He warns Spike to stay away from Buffy and
that he doesn't have a chance with her. Spike comes back with the fact that Riley doesn't
have a chance, either. That Riley isn't "dangerous" enough for her, the same thing Riley
has been worrying about himself. They end up sharing their misery and a drink. Back at
the Magic Box, Buffy is working out her frustrations in the back. Riley comes in and asks
Xander and Anya to leave so he can talk to Buffy alone. Riley tries to explain why he has
been letting the vampires suck his blood. He tells her that on some level, they made him feel
like they needed him in a way Buffy never did because she kept him out of her life. She
disagrees, saying she gave him her heart and soul but he says he never felt it. He tells her
about the Belize operation and that he's going unless she convinces him he has reason to
stay. This just makes Buffy angrier and she walks out. In the alley, she's surrounded by
vampires upset that she burnt down their clubhouse. They find out that confronting a
peeved Slayer isn't a good idea, as she dusts all but one in short order. The last one is a
woman, the same woman she saw Riley with earlier. She lets the woman run away, then
launches a staff through air like a spear, dusting the woman as she's running. Xander comes
out from the shadows. He wants to talk but she doesn't and goes into a random warehouse.
Xander follows. He tells her he knows about Riley and Buffy's relationship breaking down
and wonders how Buffy never realized it herself. More importantly he makes her realize
just how good for her Riley was and how she really was keeping him shut out. He gets
through to her, and she runs out after Riley. But she's too late, arriving just in time to see
the helicopter take off with Riley aboard. Meanwhile, perhaps thinking about what he told
Buffy, Xander goes back to Anya and tells her that he loves her.
"Into The Woods"
December 12 - 16
Lying in bed together, Xander and Anya wonder how Buffy is doing with Riley being gone
the past week or so. Buffy is dealing with it like she deals with most things - beating up
vampires, this time in a convent of all places.
While training with Giles the next day, Giles talks about his upcoming trip to England. He's
hoping the Council of Watchers will have something in their library to help them tackle
Glory. Anya is eager to run the shop while he's gone, but not to eager to have the others
drop in and get in her way.
                                                                                              76
Back home, Buffy is happily surprised to see Joyce up and around and in real clothes
instead of her pajamas. In Buffy's room, Dawn notices Buffy has finally taken Riley's
pictures down. In his crypt, Spike uses a store manequin to practice talking to Buffy. It
doesn't go well and he ends up bashing it with a box of chocalates.
Giles has been gone two days, and Anya gets mad at Willow because she's taking stuff off
the shelves to do spells with no intention of paying. She's especially mad when Willow
causes the cash register to disappear and brings it back in a smoking mess (but thankfully
the money is okay). Anya and Willow try to get Xander on their side, which he wisely gets
out of by leaving. Tara follows. Left alone, Willow tries to do the spell while Anya tallies up
the cost and constantly interrupts. The interruptions screw the spell up and a giant troll
appears in the middle of the shop. At UC Sunnydale, Tara and Buffy get out of class and
decide to go to the Magic Box and see how things are going. Meanwhile, Willow and Anya
are in Giles' car trying to follow the troll by the trail of destruction he's left behind. At the
Bronze, Xander is being bugged by Spike's presence. Spike particularly likes the chicken
wings and flowering onion. And bugging Xander. Buffy and Tara find the shop a wreck and
head out to find whatever did the damage. The troll heads towards the smell of ale coming
from the Bronze. The troll arrives at the Bronze, followed shortly by Anya and Willow and
Buffy and Tara. The troll addresses Anya by name, and reveals they used to date back
when he was a human named Olaf until Anya caught him cheating and turned him into the
troll, launching her career as a vengeance demon. Later, it seems, witches trapped him in
the crystal Willow used in her spell. Meaning he's not thrilled with Anya or Willow. Buffy
and Olaf fight, and Olaf's hammer ends up bringing down a large portion of the Bronze's
upper level. When Buffy gets free of the debris, Olaf is gone. She sees Spike kneeling by one
of the victims, but he says he's not sampling, even though he could, because he knows Buffy
wouldn't like it. It doesn't go over quite like he planned - she's still disgusted by him. Anya
and Willow head back to the Magic Box for supplies, and Olaf bursts in on them. Xander
shows and tries to fight but Olaf beats him down pretty easy then decides to let Xander
choose which woman dies - Anya or Willow. Xander refuses. Olaf breaks Xander's arm but
he still won't decide. Willow tries a spell and the cash register disappears. Buffy shows up
and attacks. Anya tells Buffy Olaf's strength is in his hammer. They fight, during which
Willow finally gets a spell that takes Olaf's hammer out of his hands Buffy attacks and is
still knocked flat because, of course, Olaf still has his troll strength. Olaf comments that
Xander and Anya will never last as a couple and this drives Buffy over the edge. With her
relationship with Riley seemingly over, it's more important to her than ever that her friends
are happy. She finally knocks Olaf unconcious. Willow uses a spell to send him to the land
of trolls.
Giles is back from England and at the Summers house. The Council doesn't know anything
about Glory but they'll use Giles' info and check into it. They talk briefly about the Key, as
Dawn overhears part of it from the stairs.
(Xander remembers Riley asking for a wrench three weeks ago and thinks he still needs to
give it to him, suggesting to me that it's been about that long since Riley left)

January 9 - 11
Giles reports that the Council of Watchers has come up with some info that might help
them and that Quentin Travers and some other Watchers are actually coming over from
England. Buffy isn't thrilled because she's still not keen on the Council in general and
Travers in particular.
When Travers and his crew arrive, they close down the Magic Box. They have info about
Glory, but are uncertain Giles and Buffy are up to the task, so they're going to hold a
review board.
On top of that stress, Buffy gets dressed down in class and takes it out on a vampire. Spike
arrives to 'save' her which just torques her off even more.
One of Glory's toadies, Jinx, approaches Ben at the hospital and tells him that Buffy is the
Slayer and asks for info on her. Ben refuses.
The Watchers begin their review by questioning the Scooby Gang (and Spike) in an effort to
judge Buffy's effectiveness as the Slayer. After an unspectacular physical review, Buffy goes
home to find - Glory.
Glory tells Buffy to give up the Key or Glory will kill everyone Buffy loves. During her
speech, Dawn walks in, but Glory doesn't realize that Dawn is the Key. Buffy hustles Dawn
and her mom off to Spike for safe-keeping. Joyce and Spike watch Passions.
On her way to the Magic Box to again face the Watchers, Buffy is attacked by a group of
the Knights of Byzanthium. They're on a mission to destroy the Key so that Glory can't get
it, and will kill Buffy in the process if they have to do so.
When Buffy gets to the Magic Box, she lays down the law to the Watchers. There will be no
review. The Watchers will reinstate Giles (and give him back pay) and give Buffy any and
all info they have on Glory, then they'll leave. Travers agrees and tells Buffy what they
know about Glory:
"She's a god."
"Checkpoint"
January 17 - 19
Buffy decides to tell the gang that Dawn is the Key that Glory is looking for. Glory is
apparently one of three hellgods that rule a dimension. Somehow, Glory has crossed over to
Earth, and as powerful as she is, being in human form is keeping her in check some. She has
to do a brainsucking thing to keep going, explaining all the crazies popping up in
Sunnydale.
Jinx and a few of Glory's minions interrupt the Knights of Byzanthium and get their butts
kicked. Just as Orlando gets ready to stab Jinx, Glory arrives. She questions Orlando about
the Key, but of course he doesn't know anything, so she sucks his brains out.
Tara and Willow do a warning spell around the shop to give them a heads-up in case
something hellgodishly powerful gets close.
Buffy's birthday party gets a little wierd as the gang tries to act normal around Dawn now
that they know she's the Key. Dawn gets mad and goes to her room, then climbs out the
window. She catches Spike lurking outside with a smashed up box of chocalates. She tells
him she's going to break into the Magic Box and Spike decides to go along for fun. Dawn's
mission is to find Giles's notes. As Dawn reads about the Key, she remembers some wierd
things that have happened to her lately. Spike takes the book and finishes reading and they
both realize the truth - Dawn is the Key.
Back at the Summers's home, the party is interrupting by Dawn and a large knife. She's cut
herself to see if she bleeds. Buffy and Joyce try to console her but Dawn screams at them to
leave her alone.
                                                                                             78
Buffy realizes that Spike was involved in Dawn's trip to the Magic Box and confronts him,
but he points out that if Buffy had told Dawn up front, she wouldn't have had to find out by
sneaking into Giles's papers.
Ben recognizes Orlando in the hospital mental ward. Jinx again tells Ben to help Glory and
again Ben tells Jinx to get lost and that Glory can't touch him.
Dawn gets suspended from school for yelling at the teacher. At home, she comes in on the
end of a conversation between Joyce and Buffy. Of course, the part she hears makes her
think that they don't consider her real or part of their family. She trashes her room and
runs away.
The Scooby Gang splits up to search for Dawn. Buffy takes Spike with her, and admits that
he was right and she should've told Dawn. Spike assures Buffy they'll find her.
Dawn makes her way to the hospital and wanders into the mental ward, where all the
patients get riled at her presence. She runs into Ben, who treats her to hot chocolate. Dawn
spills her guts to him, including revealing that she's the key. Ben freaks and tells her to run,
but before Dawn can leave, Ben morphs into Glory. Luckily for Dawn, Glory doesn't
remember what happens when she's in Ben's form. Dawn feigns ignorance about the Key
and gets Glory to tell her about it. Glory says the Key is evil. Glory also decides Dawn can't
help and gets ready to suck her brains out.
The Scooby Gangs checks out the hospital to see if by chance Dawn ended up there
somehow. They arrive in time to get Dawn away from Glory. During the fight, Buffy gets
stabbed with a tire iron. Before Glory can do much more damage, Willow and Tara do a
teleportation spell and get rid of Glory, materializing her high above Sunnydale. Buffy and
Dawn bond, as Buffy tells Dawn that no matter what else, they share the same blood -
they're sisters.
Dawn kind-of remembers Ben being around, but thinks he may have left before Glory
showed up.
(Trying to keep it in the neighborhood of January 19th, my pick for Buffy's birthday.)
"Blood Ties"
February 14 - 16
The gang is celebrating the re-opening of the Bronze (after being trashed by Olaf). Spike
sits down beside Buffy and starts complaining about the raised prices and the lack of
flowering onion on the new menu. Before Buffy can tell him to get lost, Xander comes up
and does it for her. Then Xander offers to buy drinks but realizes that Spike stole his money
when he stalked off. Meanwhile, Willow's still feeling a bit woozy from the teleportation
spell she and Tara used on Glory. While Xander tries to get his money back, Spike is more
interested in watching Buffy talk to Ben, who's just walked in.
At the train station, a train arrives with a load of dead passengers.
When Buffy gets home, Giles is there with Joyce and Dawn, offering what scant protection
he can in case Glory comes calling. Buffy accuses Dawn of borrowing a blue sweater, but
Dawn didn't take it. Spike did.
In his crypt, Spike is getting annoyed by Harmony's advances until she suggests playing a
game. Harmony gets to wear Buffy's sweater and play Slayer for Spike.
After school, Dawn goes to visit Spike. She likes him because he talks to her like a person.
She feels safe with him (which causes him to choke on his cig). Spike regales her with stories
from his bad old days which are interrupted when Buffy bursts in looking for her sister.
Peeved, Buffy is escorting Dawn home when Dawn drops the bombshell - Spike is into
Buffy.
While Buffy and Xander check out the train for clues, she tells Xander what Dawn said,
which gives Xander a good laugh until Buffy suggests that Dawn has a crush on Spike.
Xander is the one she's supposed to have a crush on.
                                                                                            79
When Buffy arrives home, she comes across Joyce and Dawn hanging with Spike. Spike
tells Buffy he's got a line on the vamp that killed the train passengers and takes her to a
warehouse. When Buffy and Spike go in the warehouse, the vamps rabbit. Buffy realizes
that these vamps aren't the right ones. They've been settled in for awhile. Then it hits Buffy,
this is Spike's attempt at a date. He swears he's changing, and not just because the chip in
his head keeps him from killing. Buffy's disgusted and leaves before Spike can get to the 'L'
word.
Back in his crypt, a dejected Spike has a visitor - Drusilla. She tells Spike about what's
going on in LA with Angel and the newly re-vamped Darla and Angel setting them on fire.
She wants the family back together. Dru tells Spike she knows about the chip but that he
can overcome it. It's a lie and he can be the big bad again if he tries. Harmony comes in and
tells Dru to hit the bricks. Spike tosses Harmony aside. He's back. Spike and Dru go to the
Bronze.
Joyce and Willow tell Buffy she needs to talk to Spike again and make sure he knows in no
uncertain terms that nothing can ever happen between them.
At Spike's crypt, Buffy finds a shrine to her that Spike has made. On her way out, she runs
into Spike and Dru. Dru zaps Buffy with a cattle prod. Dru hands the prod to Spike. He
zaps Dru.
When Buffy awakes, she's chained down in Spike's cave. And Spike has Dru tied up, too.
Spike's going to prove his love for Buffy by killing Dru. Unless Buffy doesn't admit that
there's even the smallest chance for them, in which case he'll let Dru go to kill Buffy. Buffy
doesn't give in. While Spike raves about what the two women have done to him, Harmony
shoots him with a crossbow (missing the heart). Spike and Harmony tussle and Dru frees
herself, going after Buffy. Spike pulls Dru off Buffy and unlocks Buffy's chains. Spike and
Buffy face down Dru and Harmony. Dru and Harmony leave. Buffy decks Spike. Buffy
walks home with Spike dogging her heels, trying to talk to her. Buffy once again tells him to
get lost and to reinforce the point, when Spike tries to go in Buffy's house with her, he can't
get over the threshold. His invitation has been revoked.
"Crush"
February 20 - 22
Buffy is working out and pounding the stuffing out of a heavily padded Xander, still
freaked at Spike's interest in her. She complains that she'll never find love. Meanwhile a
young, pretty, perky girl (April) arrives in Sunnydale looking for love herself.
At the Summers home, Joyce is preparing for a date with Brian.
At UC Sunnydale, Willow, Tara and Anya are approached April. She asks them if they
know where Warren is. When they don't, the girl goes to the next person she sees and asks
them.
The gang (and Ben) attend a party in a campus dorm. Buffy asks Ben to dance and waits
while he goes to dump his drink. April is there, too, asking everyone is sight about Warren.
A guy (Warren) cuts through the crowd to Katrina and tells her they have to leave. Spike
walks up behind Buffy. Buffy again tells him to get lost and he walks off as Ben comes back.
Spike sees April and approaches her. Whatever he whispers to her doesn't set too well with
her as she hoists him over her head and tosses him through the window. When Buffy tries to
talk to April, she tosses Buffy aside, too. Everyone agrees April is a robot. The gang decides
they have to find Warren, but that it can wait until the next day. Buffy gets home to relieve
Giles of Dawn-watching duty.
April is going door-to-door in the middle of the night looking for Warren.
At the Magic Box, Willow tracks down a Warren Mears who went to Sunnydale High for a
bit then switched to a tech school. The gang figures he's home for spring break at his
parent's house.
                                                                                          80
Buffy calls Ben and makes a coffee date with him then goes to Warren's house, just as he's
trying to hustle Katrina out of town.
As the gang prepares to leave the Magic Box and head to school, Spike comes in covered
with a smoking blanket. Giles promptly tosses him back out.
Warren tries to explain to Buffy that April isn't a sexbot, that he made her to actually care
about him. But it got boring because April was so predictable. Then Warren met Katrina,
but couldn't bring himself to tell April so he left her alone in his dorm room.
Katrina runs into April. When April asks her about Warren, Katrina tells April to go away
and that Warren is her boyfriend, not April's. April picks Katrina up by the throat and
starts to strangle her. Warren and Buffy arrive just in time. Warren tries to ditch April
again but Buffy forces him to break up with her the right way this time. He tells April that
he doesn't love her anymore and instead loves - Buffy! April's combat mode engages and
she and Buffy fight it out. April almost chokes Buffy but her batteries are winding down
and she loses strength. Buffy ends up sitting with April on the swings as April slowly loses
power, all the while hoping that Warren will come back to her.
Buffy calls Ben to break their coffee date and gets an answering machine. Glory is the one
who hears the message.
Spike shows up at Warren's house with all his Buffy stuff. He tells Warren to build him a
Buffybot.
Buffy arrives home, calling for her mom. There's no answer, but Buffy sees flowers from
Brian. Buffy calls up the stairs, asking if she needs to pick up Dawn from school. No answer.
Buffy looks in the living room.
Joyce is lying sprawled on the couch.
She doesn't move.
Doesn't blink.
Doesn't breathe.
"I Was Made To Love You"
February 22
Buffy calls 911. Then she calls Giles. Paramedics come but it's too late. They get another
call and leave Buffy alone with her mother's body. Giles arrives and stays with Buffy while
the coroner's office takes Joyce away. Buffy goes to Dawn's school and tells her what
happened. The gang get ready to go and be with Buffy and Dawn, all of them having a hard
time processing what happened, especially Anya. Everyone gathers at the hospital where
Dr. Kriegel has finished the autopsy. Joyce had an aneurysm related to the tumor she'd had
removed. The doctor tells them that even if someone had been with her, there probably
wouldn't have been anything they could do. Dawn tells Buffy she needs to go to the
bathroom but actually goes to the morgue to see Joyce, still not accepting what's happened.
The rest of the gang except Tara go off to find Buffy something to eat and Tara uses the
chance to tell Buffy that her own mother died when she was seventeen and that if Buffy
wants to talk about it... In the morgue, Dawn pulls the sheet from Joyce's face. Behind her,
another body sits up. A vampire. Buffy notices Dawn is still gone and realizes where she
went. Buffy bursts into the morgue and fights with the vamp, eventually cutting it's head off
with a bone saw, leaving her and Dawn alone with their mother's body.
"The Body"
February 28 - March 2
Buffy goes to pick out a coffin for Joyce with Giles and Dawn. At Buffy's house, the gang
try and figure out the funeral arrangements. Joyce had told Buffy before her operation that
if anything went wrong, she didn't want a wake because potluck dinners are depressing
enough.
                                                                                            81
Dawn doesn't want to come back to the house after the funeral so she gets permission to go
to Willow's. As Xander and Willow leave Buffy's, Spike walks up with flowers. Xander
thinks the flowers are a gimmick for Spike to get in good with Buffy, but Spike denies it. He
says he wasn't going to see Buffy, just leave the flowers. Joyce was the only one of the group
he could stand and the only one that treated him decent. Finally Spike tosses the flowers
down in disgust and walks off. Willow points out there's no card on the flowers.
The funeral goes as well as such things can. Tara and Willow take Dawn home when it's
over but Buffy stays by the grave until sunset. Then Angel joins her. At Willow's, Dawn tells
her she wants Willow and Tara to do a spell to bring Joyce back. They tell her they can't.
Witches can't alter the fabric of life for selfish reasons. Wiccans took an oath. Which means
to Dawn that it is possible. At the graveside, Angel and Buffy spend the night talking. Buffy
doesn't know how to face the next day without her mom in the picture. At the hospital, Ben
is approached by Jinx. Glory knows of Ben's attempt at dating Buffy and wants to
encourage it so she can find out information about the Key. Ben lets slip that the Key is an
innocent, though insists to Jinx that he didn't mean innocent person. He realizes Jinx will
tell Glory and stabs Jinx with his own dagger.
Willow and Tara get ready to leave for class. Dawn says she wants to sleep some more and
then will get Giles to pick her up. Before she walks out, Willow magically causes a book on
the shelf to slide out a few inches. Dawn gets the witchcraft book and flips the pages, finding
a resurrection spell. At the Magic Box, Dawn pretends to help out while scanning the
merchandise for the stuff she'll need for the spell. She snags some stuff and sneaks it into
her backpack. That night at the graveyard, Dawn is getting some dirt from Joyce's grave
when Spike shows up. He says he's not going to tell on Dawn - he's going to help her. He
offers to take her to someone that can help, but makes Dawn promise that Buffy never
hears of Spike's involvement. He knows Buffy would stake him. A wounded Jinx makes it
back to Glory's and tells her what Ben said, that the Key is in human form. Spike takes
Dawn to a shop run by Doc, who looks like a normal human but Dawn catches sight of a
scaly tail. Doc tells them they need to get the egg of a Ghora demon to do the spell. Spike
and Dawn head to the sewers and get the egg (after a fight, of course). Back at her house,
Dawn starts the spell. Back at Willow and Tara's room, Tara notices the witchcraft book is
gone. They call Buffy. Buffy bursts into Dawn's room as she finishes the spell. Buffy and
Dawn have a tearful confrontation as something makes it's way to the house. As a knock
comes at the door, Dawn realizes what it is that she's done and tears up Joyce's picture,
ending the spell just before Buffy opens the door. Nothing is outside. Buffy and Dawn share
a good cry.
"Forever"
March 12 - 14
Giles is helping out at Buffy's. He suggests maybe it's time to get back into their training
schedule but Buffy isn't sure. She's afraid that being the Slayer is making her too hard.
She's afraid that her mom didn't even know she loved her. Giles tells Buffy that there's a
quest she can go on that might help her find some answers. Meanwhile, at Warren's house
(from "I Was Made to Love You") Spike is there picking up his brand new Buffy robot. At
Glory's place, she's getting peeved. Ben is resisting her too strongly. But now she knows the
Key is human, and that the Slayer must have contact with it. She orders her minions
(including mostly-healed Jinx) to find out who is new in the Slayer's life.
Giles takes Buffy out into the desert and performs a spell to lead Buffy on her quest for
knowledge. In his crypt, Spike takes his BuffyBot on a 'test drive.' In the desert, a mountain
lion appears and leads Buffy to a spot she finds familiar. Dawn, Tara and Anya are at
Xander's place while Buffy is gone. They don't know it, but they're being watched by
Glory's minions. Willow is being followed at the UC Sunnydale campus, too.
                                                                                             82
Anya and Xander decide to do a quick patrol and are surprised to run into Buffy. Actually,
it's the BuffyBot, programmed a little too accurately and looking to Slay something. Spike
comes along and gets it away from a confused Xander and Anya after staking a few vamps.
Worried that Spike is using Buffy's rough emotional state to take advantage of her, they go
to check things out and sees Spike and the 'Bot making out in the graveyard. They go back
to Xander's and tell Willow and Tara what they saw. Xander goes to confront Spike (who
hides the BuffyBot in the tunnels), and while he's there Jinx and some other toadies arrive.
They knock out Xander and kidnap Spike, thinking he's the Key. In the desert, Buffy's
guide arrives in the form of the First Slayer. She tells Buffy that instead of not being able to
love, Buffy loves with all her soul. Loves so much she has to pull back. Then she tells Buffy
about her gift - death. The BuffyBot comes out of her hiding place and starts looking for
Spike, ignoring an unconscious Xander. It ends up at Xander's place and talks to Willow.
Xander makes it back to the apartment and tells them what's up. With Willow, Anya and
the BuffyBot, he goes to Buffy's place for weapons. Glory knows that Spike can't be the Key
because he's impure, but decides to torture him for fun (and maybe some information). At
Buffy's house, the real Buffy shows up as the gang is gathering weapons. They're all a little
grossed out when they realize that the other Buffy is one of Warren's robots and what Spike
must have wanted it for. The gang go searching for Glory's place. Spike is still being
tortured because he's not going to tell Glory anything about the Key. He escapes just as
Buffy and the gang arrive. After a fight with the minions, they get Spike away but the Bot is
damaged in the process. At the Magic Box, Willow thinks she can probably fix it.
At the crypt, Spike is in seriously bad shape after the torture. The BuffyBot comes in. When
she finds out why Glory tortured Spike, she says she'll go tell Glory where the Key is and
everything will be okay. Spike orders her to never ever tell about the Key because if
something happened to Dawn, it would destroy the real Buffy and Spike couldn't handle
that. The Bot kisses Spike. Except it's not the Bot, it's the real Buffy. She tells him that the
robot was gross and obscene and not real, but that what Spike did for her and Dawn was
real and she wouldn't forget it.
"Intervention"
March 19 - 21
Buffy drops out of school so she can take care of Dawn. Ben finds out that he's been fired
from the hospital because he hasn't been there in two weeks. Then he turns into Glory again
and takes a bubble-bath. Buffy then has to take Dawn to the principal's office at her school,
after finding out how many times Dawn has skipped. At the Magic Box, Buffy begs Giles to
help her with Dawn but he tells her that he can't. Buffy is Dawn's family and Buffy is the
one that has to put her foot down. So she does and takes Dawn home for her to do her
schoolwork. Tara and Willow get into a small fight and Tara is left to go to the Multi-
Cultural Fair by herself. Unfortunately, Glory now thinks Tara is the key and they go after
her. Dawn is rebelling against Buffy's new house rules, feeling that since she's not really
human it doesn't matter if she goes to school or not, but Buffy tells her it does matter - the
principal told her that if Dawn doesn't get it in gear at school, she'll be taken away from
Buffy. At the Magic Box, one of Glory's minions shows up and is quickly captured by the
gang. It tells them that it's job is to watch over the Slayer's people while Glory gets the Key.
They realize that Glory is after Tara. Glory finds Tara, then finds that she's not the Key so
she sucks her brain out, leaving Tara a mindless zombie. The gang takes her to the hospital
(Glory also broke Tara's hand) and then try and convince Willow to go home since Tara is
being kept overnight. Willow wants to go after Glory but Buffy tells her not to, they don't
have a chance against her. Willow agrees then goes to the Magic Box and heads straight for
the stash of extra powerful books and such. She raids Glory's place and gives it her best
shot.
                                                                                          83
Buffy goes to pick up Dawn from Spike's place, and they make Buffy realize that Willow is
likely to be going after Glory no matter what Buffy told her. Buffy arrives at Glory's during
the big magic fight and manages to get Willow out before Glory nails her.
Buffy, Dawn and Willow go to the hospital the next day to be with Tara. As they're having
lunch, Glory bursts in through the wall. About that time, Tara reacts to Dawn's presence,
recognizing her as the key. Glory smiles.
"Tough Love"
February
Gunn, Wesley and Cordy find themselves facing down zombie cops, including the late Peter
Harkes and Kevin Helenbrook. Angel uses Kate to get the man behind the undead peace
officers and undoes the spell, but not before Wesley is shot.
(Kate went to Harkes' funeral "six months ago" which was August, putting this ep in
February.)
