                                           Let’s learn
Summary is a shortened version of a text that highlights its
key points. To summarize is to retell a story in your own
words. Writing a summary requires you to make use of your
own words, make the original composition shorter, and tell
only the important points in the beginning, middle and
end.
Summarization helps you to determine essential ideas and
consolidate important details that support them. It also enables you to focus on
key words and phrases of an assigned text that are worth
noting and remembering. Thus, it teaches you how to
take a large selection of text and reduce it to the main
points for more concise understanding.
Don’t forget also the who (who are the characters), what
(what did the characters want), where (where did the
story happen), when (when did the story happen), why
(state the conflict) and how (how did the story end).
The Elements of Story are:
♦ Setting—a direct or an implied statement that
tells when and where the story happened.
♦ Characters —actors in the story.
♦ Plot—the body of the story made up of:
        a. Beginning or initial event—an action, an
idea, or a situation that sets the story’s plot
            in motion.
        b. Internal response—the main character’s response to the initial event including the
formation of a goal or a decision to pursue some course of action.
        c. Attempt/s—an effort/efforts to achieve the main character’s goal.
        d. Outcome—a direct result of the attempt.
        e. Consequence—an action, a change of behavior or a state of affairs that results from
the outcome of the main character’s attempt/s.
Here are the process writing a summary:
                                                                                                 6

Example of Summarizing the Article:
The scientist at Oxford UK University said that vaccine for COVID-19 could be ready
in September. Researchers are hoping to make millions of vaccines. Oxford scientists hope to
conduct thousands of clinical traits, but they are not sure if human have same immunity as
monkeys. It takes years to develop a vaccine and available for patients and the health officials
suggested that COVID-19 vaccine it could take between 12 to 18 months.

                                                      Summarizing in paragraph form:
There was once an old penguin named Tacky. Tacky
lived on an iceberg with other penguins. Tacky does
many things differently than other penguins, such as
sing, dive, and march. One day hunters come try to
capture the penguins. Tacky confused and annoyed
the hunters by singing, marching, and splashing
them until they left. The other penguins were
thankful to Tacky for saving them and thankful for
                                                his uniqueness.
Use few words to tell the most important part of the story. Summaries should be written in the
third person. A summary focuses solely on the content of what you have read, never on your
opinion or thoughts about the content.
Tips in Summarizing a Story:
1. When you summarize you think about the
beginning of the story. In one or two
sentences it tells what happened in the
beginning: telling about the main characters,
setting, and problem.
2. Then move to the middle of the story and
tell about the important things happening. In
one or two sentences, it tells what is going
on with the problem of the story.
3. To finish the summary look to the end of
the story and tell what happened. In one or
two sentences and tell how the problem in
the story was solved.
4. To end the summary with a sentence
talking about the theme of the story. You ask
your what is the author’s message or theme
and then tell a sentence describing this
theme.
                                                                                                 8
Example:
What Sarah Likes? Sarah and her mom
                          Sarah likes cookies. She made
                              cookies with her mom
When the cookies come out of
                           the oven they were burnt.
Sarah and her mom went to the
                        store and buy delicious cookies.
Summarizing the story in paragraph form:
Sarah likes cookies. Sarah and her mom made cookies. When the cookies come out of
the oven they were burnt. Instead, Sarah and her mom buy delicious cookies in the store.
When a reader summarizes a text, they evaluate the
information and decide what is important and what
isn’t. Summarizing helps a reader gain a more
                                         concise understanding of the text.
Main ideas are often found in topic sentences.
These are usually the first sentence of a paragraph.
The concluding sentences often contains the main
                                         idea.
                                                                                           9
Example:
Clare was relaxed at a beach all to
                                                 herself.
                                           The water was Clare thought
               A seagull flew
                                             very still. of her friends
                above her.
                                                                           back at work.
Summarizing the story in paragraph form:
Clare’s feet was lapped gently by the water at the beach and her lungs filled with fresh air.
Clare watched a seagull as it landed softly on the blue water. There was no single person in
the beach. Clare thought of her friends who back at work.
Remember, when you present a summary, you want your reader to be confident that you are
communicating only what the writer said, not your own ideas.
Writing a good summary is not as easy as it may appear. It requires quite a bit of finesse. First
you must read and comprehend the text. This may involve unpacking lengthy sentences and
decoding challenging vocabulary. Then you must identify main ideas and key points, which
means that you must have a good enough understanding of the text to distinguish between
essential and nonessential information. Finally, you must express this information in your own
words. This means that summarizing a text requires both comprehension and expression skills.
The Importance of Summarizing
Summarizing teaches you how to discern the most important ideas in a text, how to ignore irrelevant
information, and how to integrate the central ideas in a meaningful way. Teaching you to summarize
improves their memory for what is read. Summarization strategies can be used in almost every
content area.
                                                                                                10
Summarizing is an important skill in academic writing. It enables you to extract the most
important points from a text and rewrite them in your own words, in a shortened form. Such
skills are invaluable when you are note taking and researching for an essay. Being able to write
a good summary also demonstrates that you have fully understood the text you are reading.

POST-TEST:
Direction: Choose the statement that best summarizes the following passages. Write the letter
of the correct answer on your notebook.
1. The fact that electronic computers are now used for data processing has led the general
public to believe that it is a mysterious, complicated science and that the computers are giant
brains. Both ideas are false. A computer is basically just a high-speed adding machine that
performs the functions it is told to. If the input data are varied even a little, the computer is
unable to operate until it is programmed to accept the variations. The business operations it
performs are impressive only because of the extremely high speed of manipulation, but most
of these operations have been used for decades. Unlike man, the computer performs repetitive
calculations without getting tired or bored.
    a. A computer is a high-speed adding machine.
    b. A computer is a mysterious giant brain.
    c. A computer is impressive because of its high speed.
    d. A computer is superior to man in many ways.
2. In earlier days those who had overseas business which they believed should be discussed
personally, took ship and set out across the briny deep. Once aboard they transacted their
affairs, engaging in commercial and social matters or conducting government business. Today
ships and passengers continue to sail the seven seas, and airplanes soar overhead. But above
them all, words speed through the sky – telephone conversations quickly bring together in the
most personal fashion people who are separated by thousands of miles.
    a. Overseas telephone service today is ruling out all need for overseas travel.
    b. Nothing can take the place of person-to-person conversation in settling business, social,
    and government problems.
    c. Many conversations which once required overseas travel can now be conducted by
    telephone.
    d. Even with modern overseas telephone service people continue to travel abroad by ship
    or by plane.
3. The attitudes of Americans toward gambling are amazingly contradictory. You may find,
for example, that horse racing is legal in your state, but that you cannot legally play poker for
money on your front porch; bookies may be prosecuted by state law, but they are supposed to
purchase a federal license nonetheless; one church condemns gambling, while another raises
money by sponsoring Bingo games. Gambling laws are inconsistent from state to state or even
from town to town and are very difficult to enforce.
     a. Americans have negative attitudes toward gambling.
     b. Gambling laws are difficult to enforce
     c. Gambling laws are inconsistent from community to community.
     d. Churches do not have uniform ideas about gambling.
