What are the four pillars of

Christianity?
Christianity is based on four Pillars,
namely:
1. CREED – representing our Faith:
what must we believe?
2. SACRAMENTS – representing our
Public Worship: we must we
celebrate as a community?
3. COMMANDMENTS - representing
our Morals: what must we do?
4. OUR FATHER – representing our

comes from the Latin verb credere, which means “to believe.”

THE VIRTUE OF FAITH

What is Faith?
Faith is the theological virtue by which we believe in the existence of
God and in his revelation. Etymologically, it comes from the Latin word
fides, which means “the act of believing.”

What are the three Theological Virtues?

1. Faith, by which we believe in the existence of God and his
revelation, is the virtue that concerns the past, because we believe
in what God has already revealed.
2. Love, or charity, by which we do good deeds for God and
neighbor, is the virtue that concerns the present, because we can
love only at the present moment.
3. Hope, by which we desire Eternal Life as the reward for our faith
and good works, is the virtue that concerns the future, because only
after death we can enjoy the eternal communion with God.

In Paradise, faith will be replaced by vision, and hope by fulfillment, but

love shall remain for ever; because Heaven is the eternal communion of
love with God. As St. Paul wrote: “Faith, Hope, and Love remain; but
the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13).

LESSON 1: Existence and Attributes of God

OBJECTIVE:
This lesson is ordered to lead you to:
Doctrine: understand fully the Existence and Attributes of God
that He is Eternal, Almighty, All-Knowing, and All-
Present;
Morals: embracing more our Faith as baptized catholic; and

Worship: submitting our whole self by doing public worship

Activity 1 : Self Reflection.

1. How does this Pandemic affect your spiritual life?

2. What are your realizations during the Community Quarantine?

From the questions above, we need to deepen and to strengthen our faith
and offer everything to God, especially in the crisis that we are in today.
The only way to help ourselves is to believe that there is God and he will
never abandon us.

Taking the right Path

Besides the word Creator, there are other words that we use to describe
God alone. These are God’s attributes, or characteristics. The
attributes of God, the supreme Being, include Eternal, Almighty,
All-Knowing, and All-Present.

Eternal. Think about the time it would take to travel to a far place and it
will take a lot of time and effort to reach your certain destination. But for
God these time and effort that you exerted would like be an “Instant.”
This is because God is eternal: He always was and always will be.
Almighty. When we say that God is Almighty, we mean that God can
do all things. Another word for almighty is omnipotent. Meaning it is
impossible for God to commit a sin.
All-Knowing. Because God is eternal, he knows everything past,
present, and future. Another word for all-knowing is omniscient.
Meaning God does not control our choices or destroy our freedom to
live a full human life.
All-Present. God is everywhere. Another word for this attribute of God
is omnipresent. Meaning God is present by the fact that he created
everything and keeps everything in existence. That God is not a material
being; God not made of matter and has no material parts.

Where Are We?

When Catholic renew their baptismal promises at Easter, the priest

sprinkles the assembly with the water blessed during the Easter Vigil. In
response the congregation makes the sign of the cross.
 By doing so, what will be our response about our belief in God?
In response to our Catholic faith that we believe in the Blessed Trinity
meaning that there are three Persons in one God. Therefore, our life is
for God as the center of everything.

Taking the right Path

The Biblical Proofs of the Trinity

The Trinity is based on the words of Jesus who, before ascending into
Heaven, proclaimed: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy
Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). The manifestation of the Trinity happened at
the Oak of Mamre, when God appeared as the three angels, representing
the three divine Persons: “The Lord appeared to Abraham by the Oak of
Mamre….looking up he saw three men standing near him” (Genesis
18:1-20).

The divinity of God the Father is evident in the words of Jesus, who
said: “When you pray, say: “Father, hollowed be your name” (Luke
11:2). God is father because he created the Universe, and also because
he provides for all his creatures.

The divinity of God the Son is revealed in the following passages:

1.) The prologue of the Gospel of John “In the beginning was the
Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And
the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us”
(John 1:1, 4).
2.)The answer given to by Jesus to Philip: “Whoever has seen me has
seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you
not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?”
(John 14:9-10).
3.) The declaration of Jesus to the Jews in the temple, for which they
wanted to stone him to death: “The father and I are one”
(John 10:30).
4.) The profession of faith of St. Thomas: “My Lord and my God”
(John 20:28).

The divinity of God the Holy Spirit is manifested in the words of Jesus:
“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name,
will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you” (John
14:26). The Holy Spirit was revealed as God on the Pentecost Day:
“They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in the
different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim” (Acts 2:4).

The Trinity of Rublev

(1410 AD)

This Famous icon represents the Three Angels who visited Abraham at
the Oak of Mamre, namely, the three Persons of the Trinity. They all
wear a blue garment, symbol of their divinity, but each has something
that speaks of his own identity.

The HOLY SPIRIT, on the right, wears a green robe, representing the
new life he brings; he touches the altar,to transform the bread and wine
in Jesus’ body and blood; and has a mountain at the background,
representing Sinai and Tabor, the places of the manifestation of God. He
is looking at Christ, to draw our attention to him.

JESUS CHRIST, at the center, wears a red garment, symbol of his

humanity; and has a golden stripe, representing his resurrection. He rests
two fingers on the altar, signifying his human and divine natures, and
points to a chalice filled with wine, referring to his real presence in the
Eucharist. Behind, there is a tree, representing the Oak Mamre and the
Tree of the Cross. Jesus gazes towards the Father on the left, because all
prayers are addressed to him.

GOD THE FATHER, on the left, is completely covered with a veil, to

signify that he remains hidden to human eyes, and clasps the staff with
both hands, symbolizing his authority on earth as in heaven. Behind him
is a house, representing the Church and Paradise, his dwelling place, to
which we are all invited.
