CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
K-pop or Korean pop is a genre of music that draws on a wide range of
popular music styles. Though it originated in South Korea, K-pop has gained a
global following, with millions of fans around the world (Shelly, 2022).
Therefore, K-pop has become a truly global phenomenon because of its
distinctive blend of addictive melodies, slick choreography and production values,
and an endless parade of attractive South Korean performers (Romano, 2018).
In addition, K-pop idols have gained massive popularity among young
people worldwide, including in the Philippines. While their music and
performances are the primary reasons for their fans' attraction, their influence on
students' lifestyles is a matter of concern. K-pop idols' fashion, beauty, and
lifestyle choices are often emulated by their fans, leading to the adoption of new
trends and habits (Vergonia, 2018).
“K-pop music taught me to work hard and helps me reach my goal” (A K-
pop fan from the internet, 2013)". This proves that K-pop fans serve music as
their motivation in life, specifically K-pop music. Also, the internet has significantly
influenced the K-pop generation, with social networking sites like Facebook and
Twitter allowing fans to express their support and stay updated on global events
and K-pop trends (Agatep et. al., 2014).
This research is significant because it provides insights into the complex
relationship between popular culture and the lives of young people. By
understanding how K-pop affect the lifestyle of junior high school students, the
educators, parents, and policymakers can develop strategies to support the
students' healthy and holistic development. The study also contributes to the
growing body of literature on the impact of K-pop on youth culture, which has
important implications for media and cultural studies.
This research paper aims to assess the effects of K-pop idols on the
lifestyle of junior high school students. By analyzing questionnaires, surveys, and
interviews, we hope to present the benefits of K-pop idols to the youth culture in
the Philippines.

Research Paradigm
The study's conceptual base was the Input-Process-Output Model, as
represented in figure 1 under the research paradigm. The input contains a demographic
profile of junior high school students in terms of lifestyle, culture, behavior, and
language. In addition, structured interviews will be the primary technique for data
collection, and with the output providing critical advice to students on how K-pop affects
their lifestyle.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
The study will assess the effects of K-pop on the lifestyle of junior high school
students at Dr. Jose Lapuz Salonga High School enrolled for the school year 2023-2024.
The study will be conducted at Sto. Cristo, San Antonio, Nueva Ecija. In this research,
we will use the phenomenological method, where the standard number of respondents is
5–25, and the 25 junior high school students will be the chosen respondents for this
study. A structured interview will be the main tool in data gathering, and the observation
method will also be used to conduct the study. However, the study will also not examine
the long-term effects of K-pop on the lifestyle of junior high school students, as the
research only covers a short period of time. Overall, this study will provide insights into
the effects of K-pop on the lifestyle of junior high school students at Dr. Jose Lapuz
Salonga High School. The findings of this study may be
useful in developing strategies to support the healthy and holistic development of
young people in the context of popular culture.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The results of the study's findings would be significant to the following:
School administrators. This study may help them make well-informed choices
about whether to support or incorporate K-pop-related activities in the classroom or in
the whole school.
Teachers. In this study, teachers may be able to use this interest as a way to
connect with their students and increase their engagement in the classroom. By learning
about, K-pop and its benefits, teachers may be able to gain a deeper understanding of
their students' knowledge.
Parents. In this study, parents may now understand how and what K-pop idols
can do to improve some students' lifestyle. They can finally realize and know that, with
the help of K-pop, their children will become more active and inspired to continue
studying.
Students. The results of the study help the students to understand how K-pop
affects their lifestyle.
Future Researchers. This study may help them in their future research by letting
them know the "Effects of K-pop on the JHS students." on the life's of JHS students.
CHAPTER II
A. Local Literature
According to Carbonell et al. study in 2017, found that gender affects the level
of addiction to K-dramas. Also, the academic performance of the students is
affected by their gender, age may also affect the level of addiction, though it
doesn't affect the academic performance of students. The strand or track is
affected by the level of addiction to K-drama and by the academic performance
of the students, there is a significant relationship between the academic
performance of the students and their level of addiction to K-drama.
Additionally, Semilla and Soriano (2017) discovered that senior high
students at Marinduque, Midwest College are drawn to Korean dramas due to
attractive actors and compelling stories. They spend hours watching episodes,
sacrificing sleep, food, and school. Despite its popularity, the study found that
watching Korean dramas has fewer negative effects on students' everyday lives.
Also, Labrador (2018) highlights that Korean pop music has exerted a
profound influence on the lifestyles, culture, behavior, and language of Filipino
students.
Moreover, as noted by Salceda et al. (2019), the pervasive influence of K-
pop among PSALMS students in Valencia City has not only shaped their
fascination with idols' food, fashion, beauty, and language but has also
precipitated a notable shift in lifestyles, prompting the adoption of idol behaviors.
In addition to Padilla's (2020) findings, the Korean Wave has significantly
impacted Filipino youth, particularly adolescents, who are attracted to Hallyu-
related content in various settings such as schools, malls, public markets, and
transportation. This has led to improved lifestyles and behaviours.
Furthermore, music is a powerful force that can profoundly affect our
emotions, moods, and cognitive abilities. Many of us have experienced the power
of music to transport us to different places and times, evoke memories, and
create strong emotional responses (Sandy V. 2023).
B. Foreign literature
In the study of Habieb (2017) says that globalization has made a huge
difference in people's lives, making the world no longer borderless. With the
absence of borders, many things can easily come to this country, such as
culture. K-pop, which originated in South Korea's tradition, is one of the
cultures. Currently, K-pop gets attention from citizens around the world,
including Indonesia, and most students in Indonesia are fond of K-pop. As a
result of K-pop, students' appearance, communication, and learning methods
have changed.
Additionally, participation in music was found to positively influence academic
performance. This was seen in enhanced cognitive skills and improved reading
comprehension. It was also found that students who participated in music stayed
generally engaged in school compared to their non-co-curricular activities
counterparts (Okumu, 2017).
Similarly, Indira et al. (2018), says that music is a relatively less intrusive
and less expensive tool to improve academic performance with its own merits
and limitations. There are few studies which evaluated the effect of music therapy
on academic performance. The current study suggests that a subgroup of
students can benefit when music is used as an intervention to improve academic
performance.
Moreover, in Legaspi's study in 2019, it was found that 82% of the
interviewed students were honor students and average learners who learned K-
pop through peers and the internet. They have been fans for over two years but
less than five years. 36% are not supported by parents but do not neglect their
studies. Only 27% think K-pop has harmed their studies. They manage their time
effectively, focusing on K-pop on weekends and becoming more friendly with
others who share their love for K-pop.
Furthermore, According to Rundle (2020), K-pop music can be inspiring for
students, as it can motivate them to work hard and achieve their dreams. Songs
like 'Breakthrough' by Twice can uplifting impact students' writing and exam
performance. Music also fosters friendships and relieves stress. So, without
realizing it, a lot of young people, especially Korean Pop fans, are starting to
change their lifestyles, especially in fashion.
Additionally, According to Stren (2022), K-pop a popular genre among college
students, often features fashion icons and trendsetters, influencing their lifestyle
choices. This glamorous lifestyle can lead to extracurricular activities, leaving
students with less time for homework.
In addition, Sari et al. (2022) state that Indonesians are captivated by
Korean fever, particularly among millennial teenagers who are drawn to the
clothes worn by idol singers. This trend has led to a shift in lifestyles, particularly
in fashion, as K-pop fashion is attractive and fashionable.
Moreover, Bahagia et al. (2022) explained that K-pop culture can influence
students by fostering consumptive behavior and improving learning achievement.
It promotes clean behavior and self-confidence, and Korean music can also help
study. The spread of culture is influenced by parents, schools, and communities,
ensuring a positive learning environment.
According to Liu (2023) says that K-pop culture has a profound impact on
fans worldwide, with good idols leading fans on the right path and negative
influences from bad ones. The research shows that fans' lives are becoming
richer, but some may lose themselves in the pursuit of stars. Also, the
development of Hallyu has significantly influenced the spread of popular culture
globally, highlighting the importance of proper guidance from schools and
families. At the same time, some methods on how to correctly guide fans' values
are also introduced
Lastly, Sembiringa and Daulay’s study in 2023, explained that K-pop Idol,
a South Korean culture, has successfully penetrated Indonesia, particularly
among university students. These students, who are passionate about idols,
spend significant money on idol merchandise, demonstrating a hedonic style or
consumptive attitude towards the idols they admire.
