Lesson 1 Of 1
Learning Objective(s)/Competency
Students will: Recognize main stressors in their lives
Students will: Understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy coping strategies
Students will: Identify healthy coping strategies and positive self-talk examples
Materials:
Canva presentation, pre/post test, coping skills worksheet, monitor to display slides, reinforcer
(candy), iPads to complete pre/post test
Procedure: Describe how you will:
Introduce: I will begin by introducing myself and role as an intern, the topic of the
(7 min) lesson, how this lesson topic was chosen (it was highest rated topic in
universal screener), and why it is beneficial to their needs. (Slides 1)
I will ask students to take some time scanning the QR code and taking
the pre-test. I will walk around to assist students if they have any
questions or trouble signing on. I will remind students that it is not
graded, but to give it their best effort. (Slide 1)
Once all iPads are down I will move on to classroom expectations. I will
have one student read out loud. (Slide 2)
I will then provide a check-in to gage student’s energy levels because it
will be first period. If necessary to boost engagement, I will bring out my
candy and reinforcer for participation throughout lesson. (Slide 5)
Next, a mindful breathing exercise to center ourselves for the lesson
topic. (Slide 6)
Teach Content: I will transition into teach content by reviewing ASCA Mindsets &
(13) Behaviors and explaining to students that just like teachers, school
counselors have standards when teaching. I will review lesson objectives
as well. (Slides 3 & 4)
The general overview of the lesson is as follows (Slides 7-19):
Having student read basic definition of stress and assuring
students stress is totally normal, but it is how we manage it that
is key to positive outcomes.
Explain types of stress and ask students if they knew there was a
“good” type of stress
Ask students what are some current stressors they have? Then
have students read four domains listed. I will also ask students if I
missed any stressors/domains. I will give personal example: Going
on social media with the intent to de-stress, but seeing current
events that indirectly makes me feel more stresses, anxious,
overwhelmed.
Discuss serious stress and negative mental and physical outcomes
of prolonged stress, have students read slide.
Ask students how do we usually handle our stressors?
Review unhealthy coping strategies, emphasize that “avoiding” is
the most common one. Give personal example.
Discuss how facing our challenges and using healthy coping
strategies helps us get better at facing our challenges.
Discuss that by changing our mindset from thinking of things as
threats, to challenges we can overcome, is key. Ask students
where they can identify strengths and support when there are
stressors.
Review positive self-talk and ask students to read slide then give
me an example.
Practice Content: Pass out coping skills worksheet where students have independent work
(8 min) time to answer the three questions (What are three stressors in your
life? What are three healthy coping skills you can use? What are three
positive self-talk examples you could say to yourself?) (Slide 20)
I will write down an example answer to all three questions on the board,
and walk around to answer questions and assist students.
Summarize: Review questions where students raise their hand to answer. I will also
(3 min) provide the post test at this point. (Slide 21)
Close: Review resources available to them on campus, including the Wellness
(2 min) Center, the counseling team, and trusted adults. Ask students if they
have been to the Wellness Center and remind them of the names of the
counseling team and where they can find us. Lastly, provide QR code
resources for mindfulness apps and coloring pages, and thank them and
their teacher for being a great and respectful class.
