These are a list of plays that I have read and reviewed. *= Characters I would like to play
Biloxi Blues, By: Neil Simon Comedy, American Playwright Set: the year is 1943 at a training camp for WWII Characters: Roy Selridge, Joseph Wykowski, Don Carney*, Eugene Morris Jerome*, Arnold Epstein*, Sgt. Merwin J Toomey, James Hennesey, Rowena, Daisy Hannigan I really liked this play. This is the secound chapter in what is know as Eugene trilogy, following Brighton Beach Memoirs. The story follows Eugene who is enlisted into the army and travels the a training camp. While there he loses his virginity, falls in love (two different people I might add) and meets many interesting people. He also wrights in his memoir so that one day he may become a writer. It was show the struggle all the men have with the sergeant and dealing with the problems that arise at boot camp. I would love to do this show one day.
Brighton Beach Memoirs, By: Neil Simon Comedy, American Playwright Set: The Jerome House hold in Brighton Beach, New York. September 1937 Characters: Eugene*, Blanche, Kate, Laurie, Nora, Stanley*, Jack I really liked this play. This is the first chapter in what is know as Eugene trilogy, which is a semi-autobiographical play by Neil Simon. The play follows the Jerome family where Blanche and her daughters Laurie and Nora are living in Jack and Kates home. Nora wants to leave school to be in a broadway show, Stanley wants to quit his job so that he stands up for his princibles, Jack loses his secound job and then has a heart and attack and cant support the family. It also follows Eugene who is learning about puberty and writing in his memoir so he may become a writer one day. This was a great show
and I would love to do it one day! Death and the Maiden, By: Ariel Dorfman Political Thriller, Argentine-Chilean Playwright Set: In the Present, a country that has given itself a democratic government after a long time of dictatorship, in Paulina and Gerardos house. Characters: Paulina Salas, Gerardo Escobar, Roberto Miranda I really liked this show; it was a little too political for me but was still good. Paulina is a paranoid woman who has been raped in the past and is convinced it is Roberto who was the doctor who did it to her, so she ties him up and puts him on trial with her husband Gerardo, who was just appointed as one of the presidents investigating commission team members. It was a very powerful show with Paulina telling the story to her husband, then Robnerto repeating the story to her so that he may be let go. In the end youre not positive who was correct in saying if Roberto was guilty or the Paulina was just insane. Very good play righting!
Deathtrap, By Ira Levin Thriller, American Playwright Set: Sidney Bruhl's study in Westport, Connecticut Characters: Sidney Bruhl, Myra Bruhl, Clifford Anderson*, Helga Ten Drop, Porter Milgrim I liked this show, it was about how Sidney, an American thriller playwright, had one of this students, Clifford, comes over to revise one of Cliffords thrillers he is working on. In the process Sidney pretends to kill Clifford, but Clifford comes back and pretends to kill Sidney, which causes Myra to have a heart attack, and dies. In Act two Sidney starts to write a show about what they did to kill Myra and in the end up killing each other. Look: Weve Come Through, By Hugh Wheeler Drama, English Playwright Set: Living room of Bell and Jennifers apartment in Chelsea Manhattan in the present
Characters: Bell Dort, Jennifer Lewison, Wain Dumke, Miltie Mizer, Bobby Kraweig*, Skip I thought this show was ok. It followed Bell who moved from a small town to Manhattan and her roommate Jennifer, an aspiring actress, and how Bell is in love with Jennifers husband Wain. The show also is about the friend ship that develops between Bell and Bobby, which is my favorite part of the show. In the end I wouldnt mind doing this show but could only see myself playing Bobby.
Mrs. Lincoln, By: Thomas Cullinan Drama, American Playwright Set: June 1875 in Mary Lincolns room in Bellevue place sanitarium in Batavia, Illinois Characters: Mary Lincoln, Emilie Todd Helm, Sally, Lizzie Keckley, Robert Lincoln*, Billy Herndon, Dr. Patterson, a Veteran* I loved This show! It wasnt full of action but was captivating at every minute. It follows Mary Lincoln who is in an asylum after the death of her husband Abraham Lincoln and the Doctor trying to help her with her visions of people from her past and coping with the deaths of her sons. She keeps seeing her husband and dead sons and others that constantly put her down. A great and powerful show! Welcome to the Monkey House, By: Christopher Sergel Comedy, American Playwright Set: a Stage Characters: Miss Doris Sawyer, Newt, Harry Nash, Helene Shaw, Catherine, Susanna, Nancy, and Mary I did not like this show very much. There was no real plot because the show was about a community theatre putting on some shoes from the casting to the performance, skipping the rehearsal process. In the entire show the theatre does three shows with the cast playing multiple characters in each show. Not the most exciting story. Welcome to the Moon, By John Patrick Shanley
6 Short plays, American Playwright Characters: (The Red Coat: John*, Mary) (Down and Out: Love, Poet) (Let Us Go Out into the Starry Night: Woman, Man) (Out West: Cowboy, Girl, Betsy, Barkeep, Brother) (A Lonely Impulse of Delight: Jim*, Walter*, Sally) (Welcome to the Moon: Vinnie, Stephen*, Artie, Ronny, Shirley) I wasnt a very big fan of this show. The only short play I enjoyed were The Red Coat, about two high school students professing there love for each other. A Lonely Impulse of Delight, about two good friends where one is in love with a mermaid and trying to introduce his best friend to her. Finally Welcome to the Moon, which is about a boy coming back to his hometown to try seeing his friends but wants to commit suicide. All in all the play lacked substance and some had very bad dialog.
