               BALANCE
the equalizing visual forces or elements in an
  artwork.
the visual distribution of weight through
  COLOR, TEXTURE, and SPACE.
balance makes the image feel stable.
visual weight to create visual equilibrium.
              three forms:
             ASSYMEMETRICAL
SYMMETRICAL RADIAL
       SYMMETRICAL
-also known as FORMAL BALANCE.
-a mirror image (an exact copy of the other side).
-a concept of aesthetic composition involving equal weight and
importance on both sides of a composition
          ASYMMETRICAL
the two sides of a composition are not
the same but appear to have an equal
visual weight.
Negative and positive shapes are
unequal and unevenly distributed
throughout the artwork, leading the
viewer's eye through the piece.
        RADIAL
in which elements are equally spaced
       around a central point.
    creates a strong focal point.
         balanced equally.
            SCALE AND
           PROPORTION
PROPORTION
- is the size of objects in relation
to each other, or within a larger
whole.
Scale
- pertains to the size in relation to
what is normal for the figure or
object in question.
  PROPORTION
                                                        IDEALIZED
   NATURAL most common to those
relates to the realistic EXAGGERATED that follow canons of
                                                          perfection, the size-
   size of the visual
refers to the unusual relations of elements or
    elements in the
size relations of visual objects, which achieve
artwork, especially for
elements, deliberately the most ideal size-
 figurative artworks.
                               exaggerating the relations.
                                 immensity or
                           minuteness of an object.
       EMPHASIS AND
         CONTRAST
Emphasis
-allows the attention of the viewer to a
focal point(s), accentuating or drawing
attention to these elements or objects.
Contrast
-is the disparity between the elements
that figure into the composition. One
object may be made stronger
compared to other objects (hence,
emphasis).
 UNITY AND VARIETY
Unity
-is the overall cohesion of the work.
Variety
- is a sense of the difference
between elements of an artwork
the opposite of unity, or
harmony.
       HARMONY
-is the use of related elements or
how the elements work together.
-This might be similar colors, shapes,
sizes of objects, etc.
-It’s about repetition and a
relationship between elements.
- This creates a sense of
connection between the objects,
creating a sense of flow.
   MOVEMENT
-This indicates the direction your
eye takes as you view the work –
in what order does your eye
               travel?
 - These focal points can be lines,
edges, shape, and color within the
     work of art, among others.
         RHYTHM
-This is created when an element
  is repeated, creating implied
 movement. Variety of repetition
   helps invigorate rhythm as
      depicted in the artwork.
 -a kind of relationship between
         patterned objects.
REPETITION AND
   PATTERN
        Repetition
        - refers to one object or shape
        repeated;
         Pattern
-is a combination of elements or
shapes repeated in a recurring and
        regular arrangement; rhythm--is a
        combination of elements repeated,
        but with variations.
