The Love Canal

The Love Canal neighborhood in Niagara Falls, New York was the site of an environmental disaster in the late 1970s. A chemical company had previously dumped chemicals in an abandoned canal and later covered it with dirt when selling the land. In the following decades, residents became sick and toxic chemicals leaked from the canal after a rainstorm, contaminating the area. The government was eventually forced to evacuate families and pay to clean up the toxic neighborhood.
