EARLY MEDIEVAL SCOTTISH

800AD to 1250AD
Viking raids commenced at the beginning of this period, and were to continue almost until its end. Most of
the Isles and some parts of the mainland came under Viking rule. Against this background, the merging of the
Scots, Picts and Caledonians into the Kingdom of Alba (Scotland) continued, with recognised Kings of Scotland
appearing around 900AD-though Scotland did not encompass the same area as the modern country, being
shifted somewhat South and including modern Cumbria and some of Northumbria. Both these areas were later
lost to English or Norman invasion.
