EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Pathao means a pleasure ride. In simple terms, Pathao is a ride-sharing application

through which needy ones get the vehicle to reach on time. This is a popular initiative
that is brought to serve people across the valley. It has been an easy way of getting
and giving rides within Kathmandu. Pathao is an app which brings two wheelers as
well as four wheelers to the customers doorstep and drop customers at their
destination on time. This app basically plays the role of a matchmaker between people
who need ride on two wheelers and four wheelers and those who are willing to offer
rides inside the Kathmandu valley. Using mobile applications, the passenger can call
nearby pathao rider and get on the ride with minimum charge. Although the concept
seems to be around that of Uber or Tootle; Pathao is getting more popular across in
Kathmandu valley. Apart from making the ride easy, Pathao also provide bunch of
other services like courier service, food delivery service, E-commerce logistic
solution service. Pathao has also been helping a bunch of youth to earn pocket money
too along with making movement easier within the Kathmandu valley.

In order to get this application to get rides, one has to download Pathao drive app
from Google play store or App store and signup. To use this service to give rides and
make money, one has to download pathao drive app from Google play store and then
register by filling a form of requirements including the upload of a valid driving
licence. Pathao believes that the security of both driver/rider and customer are
important therefore it offers security features like real time ride monitoring, safety
SMS, rating system and helplines. Pathao also ensure all riders/drivers have a valid
driving license. Summarizing, pathao is a fastest growing start-ups in Asia, dedicated
to develop solutions for daily transportation problem of public. Now it is considered
as the biggest and most popular ride hailing service provider in Kathmandu.

viii
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Project

Pathao is a on-demand digital platform and transportation network company. Pathao
has ride sharing services, food delivery, courier, and E-commerce logistics solution
services. Pathao follows a superapp model, providing all its services through one app.

A live project comprises the negotiation of a brief, timescale, budget and product
between an educational organization and an external collaborator for their mutual
benefit (Zaremba, 2021). The project must be structured to ensure that students gain
learning that is relevant to their educational development.

Live Project is initially developed by Harvard University which enables in the real-
time study, observation, analysis, and conclusion of any
institute/organization/company. It is a shorter version of Internship and a bigger
version of volunteering. Basically, it helps to study the project in a company and
attain some practical knowledge and many more (Mangal& Gaur, 2017). As this
practice is more practical based, it helps the students to enhance their knowledge,
communication skills, confidence level and improves leadership qualities. Live
Project is conducted to sharpen or to test the intelligence level of a students. While
working on a live project, a student could learn to work on deadlines, to survive work
pressures, to test the actual results, to face and resolve real-time issues to work
efficiently, to handle important data and many more.

In today’s times, practical or applied learning is of utmost importance for the budding
management graduates. Live project gives opportunity in which students work
together on projects based on analysing a current business problem, conducting
market research for a new product or benchmarking current organization practices.
(Greatlakes,2019) This brings together an additional platform for students, giving
them pioneer knowledge along with a skillset towards developing a management-
oriented thought process.

1
1.2 Context of the Study
Travelling from one place to another has always been trouble for the people of
Kathmandu valley, especially in office hours. The rapid increase in number of
population and busy route, vehicles and roads are main reasons for difficult public
transportation. People either need to go through crowded and uncomfortable public
buses or travel by Taxi. Taxis are not affordable for most people and people have to
futile bargaining. Now, a new solution has been there which provide easy and fast
travel by bike, scooter or four wheelers with a very reasonable price. With the
introduction of new service industry like Pathao, people nowadays feel more
convenient, easy and secure to travel.

Pathao, a Bangladeshi on-demand digital platform and transportation network

company headquarted in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The company operates in three cities of
Bangladesh: Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, and in kathmandu, Nepal. Pathao started its
journey as a delivery service back in 2015 with its fleet of motorcycles and scooters.
The company was founded by Fahim Saleh, Hussain Elius, and Shifat Adnan.
Initially, they acted as a delivery service for several E-commerce companies of
Bangladesh. Later in 2016, Pathao started bike sharing service in mid-2016 and had
successfully signed up more than 100,000 drivers and around 1 million users in march
2018 across the country (Saleha,2019). On 12 September 2018, Pathao announced
launched their bike sharing operation in kathmandu. Several recruitment
advertisements for hiring operations manager, marketing manager and executives
were also seen in Nepalese Job-seeking websites from August 2018.

Pathao is considered as the biggest and most popular ride hailing service provider in
kathmandu. It is among the fastest growing tech startups in Asia, dedicated to develop
the optimal solutions for daily transportation problems of the public (linkedin,2019).
Pathao follows a superapp model, providing all its services through one app. They
update their app frequently to make the overall app navigation more straightforward
and more natural for all users. Both the driver and the passenger is required to have an
Android or iOS-based, internet and GPS-enabled, smartphone to avail Pathao's
service. Pathao uses a location based system to match the passenger with a driver

2
nearby heading towards the destination. It has more than 100,000 registered vehicles
across the country (Gupta & Tiwari, 2020).

Pathao fulfillment delivery service provides logistics support to its customers by

connecting the online stores with their customers (Azoulay,2018). Domestic E-
commerce business i.e., daraz, ajkerdeal etc. uses Pathaofulfillment services to deliver
the goods brought through their sites directly to the customer in person. The services
offered through this vertical of business include: cash on delivery (COD); reverse
logistics (which is a return to sender/origin support); 24-hour customer service.
Consumers benefit through the added convenience of goods being delivered to their
home, and businesses benefit by not having to borne huge delivery costs and offering
customers a value added service (Sapkota, 2017).Pathao app uses a mobile-friendly
interface which enables users to access the services on any platform: web, computer,
mobile, and a 24-hour customer service means that customers can have their problems
sorted at any hour of the day. Furthermore, by harnessing the power of technology,
Pathao aims to provide all services in one platform.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

Due to rapid increase in number of population and busy routes especially during the
office hours, traveling from one place to another place has become trouble for the
people of Kathmandu valley. But after the introduction of digital platform
transportation network company which has ride sharing services and many other
services, travelling has become convenient for the general public. The research
question of the study therefore deals with the following issues:

 What is the customer’s attitude toward Pathao ride sharing service?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

Research is carried out under the fulfillment of some objective or to achieve the desire
goal on any selected topic. The general objective of this study was to analysis the
present situation of Pathao. However, the major objective of the study is given below:

 To evaluate the customer’s attitude toward Pathao ride sharing service.

1.5 Significations of Study

Research is based on reliability data; it will guide others as a sample or example to
carry out their research works. The information obtained from this research will be

3
useful to those who would likely to know precisely about customer’s perception
toward Pathao ride sharing service. Further, the data obtained from the study can help
further researchers to study in depth.

1.6 Literature Survey

1.6.1 Literature Review

Literatures are formulated to explain, predict, and understand phenomena and, in
many cases, to challenge and extend existing knowledge, within the limit of critical
bounding assumptions. The Literature view is the structure that can hold or support a
theory of a research study. The literature review introduces and describe the theory
which explains why the research problem under study exists (M.K., 2006).

(Mohsina Jahan, 2019) conducted a research on “Factors Affecting Customer

Satisfaction of the Ride-sharing Industry in Bangladesh”. The quantitative research
technique has been used with 158 sample size. The data were collected through an
online survey questionnaire. Secondary data was collected from company websites,
journals, newspapers, and published research works. A convenient non-probability
random sampling technique has been used for this study.

The survey questionnaire mostly covered the demographic information, six

independent variables i.e. speed of ride, cost of ride, security of users, convenience of
ride, waiting time for the car and driver’s behavior and last of all, the dependent
variable i.e. customer satisfaction and sustainability. The independent variables in the
questionnaire were created in a one to five-point “Likert Scale”. Since the dependent
variable in this study is “customer satisfaction” and the response is categorized in
either “Yes” or “No”, it was a binary classification problem. Several studies (Cook,
1998; Davis &Offord, 1997; Hair et al., 1998) suggested that binary logistic
regression fits better in this circumstance.

According to the respondent’s demographic characteristics, among the total

respondents, 60% were males. As the non-probability random sampling technique was
used for this research it proves that males are more likely to use ride-sharing services
than females. Among all of the profession student represented 94.4% of the total
sample. It is clear that students constitute the major market for ride-sharing services.
So, the ride-sharing service providers should target their marketing activities mostly

4
towards students. From the table, we can see that (21-30) age bracket represents
95.6% of the total sample chosen which means young generations represent the
attractive market for ride-sharing services.

The descriptive statistics of six independent variables that are, speed, cost, security,
convenience, waiting for time and drivers' behavior shows the distribution of the
dependent variable, that is, customer satisfaction, 75.9% were found satisfied with the
services of ride-sharing companies, whereas 24.1% were found dissatisfied.
Respondents provided opinions regarding the improvement of the service that will
increase customer satisfaction including decreasing cost of the ride, increasing the
security of personal data, maintaining business ethics principles, improving vehicle
fitness, improving drivers' skills regarding safe driving, use of GPS, and making
services more available.

According to research results, the speed, cost, and convenience of the ride can
significantly impact customer satisfaction with the ride-sharing industry in
Bangladesh. So, decreasing the cost, increasing the speed and convenience can
improve customer satisfaction more than before. Although 76% of the total
respondents were satisfied using ride-sharing, many of them mentioned that
maintaining business ethics, the confidentiality of personal data, improving vehicle
fitness, service availability, and safety driving can also increase customer satisfaction
more than before. According to customers' opinions, it can be said that there is a very
big gap between the ride-sharing companies and their customers. Customers are
facing many problems and want service improvement. Ridesharing service providers
should focus more attention to reduce the fare of the ride, increase the speed and
convenience of the ride, and also consider the above-mentioned factors that impact
customer satisfaction. The findings of this study are expected to be helpful for ride-
sharing service providers to gain a better understanding of the factors that impact the
level of customer satisfaction

1.7 Research Methodology

The main purpose of research methodology is to describe the nature of research
design, sampling and data collection and analysis procedures (Adhikari& Pandey,
2016). So, this chapter includes types of research, population and sample, sources of
data, techniques of analysis.

5
The study is done to determine the consumer review on Pathao ride sharing in
Kathmandu. The research responses are derived from questionnaire survey and focus
group discussion. The method of data includes primary data. Here, primary data are
the summary of descriptive statistics associated with general information of the
respondents like age, gender, profession along with percentage frequency distribution
of the general information of the respondents.

1.7.1 Research Design

This study has employed descriptive research design. According to Cooper (1996), a
descriptive study is concerned with finding out who, what, where and how of a
phenomenon which is the concern of this study. The main advantage of this type of
design is that it enables the researchers to assess the situation within the study area at
the time of the study. The researcher therefore used the design to assess the marketing
analysis and consumer review on Pathao ride sharing in Kathmandu valley. Thus, the
research deemed the design appropriate for the study as it allowed for investigation of
how different factors attract people for selecting two-wheelers in the area of study.

1.7.2 Sampling Plan

The sampling plan of the study is:
 Sampling area: Customers of Pathao in Kritipur.
 Population: All the user of Pathao inside Kritipur.
 Sampling size: 60 users of Pathao as a respondent.
 Sampling method: Convenience sampling method.

1.7.3 Sources of Data Collection

The study has used both primary (original, new and fresh data) and the secondary data
(reliability, suitability and adequacy data). Primary data collection includes
observation, survey and questionnaires whereas Secondary data collection includes
documents and paper obtained from some published or unpublished sources such as
magazines, journals, articles, reports, related books etc. Similarly, the structured set of
questionnaire was distributed to the App users and was collected after the certain
period of time.

1.7.4 Method of Data Collection

6
The data was collected conveniently by distributing the questionnaire developed by
the researcher. Questionnaire was distributed inside the Kritipur to the users of
Pathao.

1.7.5 Statistical Tools

Various statistical tools can be used to analyze the data available to the research.
These tools are used in research in order to draw the reliable conclusion through the
analysis of collected data. Some of the statistical tools like tables, percentage analysis,
mean and standard deviation. SPSS statistics tool was used to analyze the data.

1.8 Limitation of study

The major limitations of the study are as follows:

 The study is done on the basis of the primary sources of data provided by
the respondents. Therefore, the reliability of conclusion of the study
depends upon the accuracy of the information provided by the respondent.

 This report is based on primary data collection and their authenticity

depend on answer by the respondent.

 This research was planned and prepared over limited time period and thus
researcher felt inadequate time to cover more area of the study as well as
lack of practical knowledge to involve in detailed investigation during the
study.

 Data collected were mainly based on questionnaires and based on

quantitative research only.

 Most of the findings in this study are not consistent with many of the
studies. Therefore, it is worthwhile to note that nature of data and
specification of the models may themselves be responsible for the
difference in results.

2.4 Focus Group Discussion

A Focus Discussion is a qualitative research method and data collection techniques in
which a selected group of people discusses a given topic or issue in depth, facilitated
by a professional, external moderator. As per our survey with the pathao rider and the
company we got to find the following things.

1. Creating Employment Opportunity

Pathao is able to create employment opportunities to most of the youth in the country.
There are seventy thousand people registered at patho office among which the seven
thousand are the active riders of pathao which consist of six hundred to seven hundred
female rider. As per our survey there is a lady named Om KumariChamjong who is
actively participating into as the rider and making her earnings from 2 years of time
serving the pathao. She used to be the Chinese language translator and the trekking
guide before the covid 19 pandemic and living her life but after covid she involved
into the patho and now continuing the same profession of being pathao rider.

2. Safety and Insurance

For any company the safety of their staff and the employee is the must. They should
provide with some insurance to their employees likewise, Pathao rider are also getting
the accidental insurance upto 1 lakh in case of any accident with them and for the
death of the rider it is upto 5 lakh.

3. Commission Rate
Rider have to pay the 20% of their total earning per ride as the commission to the
pathao company. There is the complaint by the rider and time to time protest with the
company to decrease the commission rate from their earning and in the same time
tootle is charging only 10% as a commission of their earning. so the pathao rider are
not satisfy with the commission charged by the company and they complaint that the
company do not address their voice.

4. Admission charge

13
For the registration, pathao company takes renewed bluebook with the third party
insurance and the license of the rider with charge of Rs. 2500 per vehicle. The charge
for registration was Rs. 1500 at past.

5. Dress code
The dress of pathao rider cost Rs.2500 but it could not be used and effectively utilized
because of the various issues of the dress code. At present if anybody seen wearing
the dress are charged fine of Rs. 1100 by the traffic police which is imposed by the
government.

6. Penalty
There is the provision of the penalty if any rider violet the rules and regulations of the
company. They are charged certain amount of fine and can be suspended for 6 to 8
hours for the another ride.

7. Real Time Tracking code system

Pathao company has been issuing one-time code system to riders as well as the
passengers. It updates about the location, the fares charged, the detail of riders and
their vehicles and the routes they followed. If any issue happens during the ride the
victim can complain and demand complete information so that database can help to
track them within a min.

Adding more to the issues in terms of company perspective, The Assistant Manager,
Shanshank at Pathao says.

Meanwhile, laws regarding pathao are not static which have been hindering towards
progressive entrepreneur.

CHAPTER III

FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND IMPLICATION

3.1 FINDINGS
This study investigated the Customer’s review on Pathao bike sharing services. This
study was based on those people who have been using the pathao ride services. The
descriptive survey research design was adopted in this study. Convenience sampling
technique was used to select the samples from the population. A total of 61
respondents were used for analysis. To support the study, information relevant to the
study were obtained from both primary and secondary data. Primary data were
acquired from the respondents of the study by providing them the questionnaire. The
