READING

BY DIANA CRIȘAN & ALEX ȚANDEA

WHAT IS READING ?

• "Reading" is the process of looking at a

series of written symbols and getting
meaning from them. When we read, we use
our eyes to receive written symbols
(letters, punctuation marks and spaces)
and we use our brain to convert them into
words, sentences and paragraphs that
communicate something to us. Reading
can be silent (in our head) or aloud (so
that other people can hear).
• Reading is a receptive skill - through it

CLASSICAL LITERATURE
we receive information. But the complex
process of reading also requires the skill of
speaking, so that we can pronounce the
words that we read. In this sense, reading
is also a productive skill in that we are
both receiving information and
transmitting it (even if only to ourselves). 2
THE 3 STAGES OF READING
The Many Benefits of Reading
Beyond reading, because you have to, the importance of reading cannot go unnoticed. Reading is of
great value because it provides the means by which you get to:

Strengthens Brain Activity

Reading gets your mind working across different areas. For starters, it involves comprehension to
process the words you read. Beyond that, you can use your analytical abilities, stimulate memories,
and even broaden your imagination by reading words off a page.

Boosts communication skills

Both reading and writing work to improve one’s communication skills. That’s why if you’re looking to become a
better writer, many of the suggestions that you come across will include reading more. Reading can open your
eyes, literally and figuratively, to new words. Try this next time you read: if you come across any words you read
that you don’t know, take a moment to look them up and write them down. Then, remember to use your new
words in your speech so you don’t forget them!
Enhances creativity
Reading has the potential to boost your levels of creativity. Whether you read about a specific craft or skill to
boost it or you are reading randomly for fun, the words could spark new ideas or images in your mind.

Lowers Stress
If you don’t think that strengthening your brain is enough of a benefit, there’s even more good news. Reading
has also been proven to lower stress as it increases relaxation. When the brain is fully focused on a single task,
like reading, the reader gets to benefit from meditative qualities that reduce stress levels.

Entertains
It’s no wonder why you may see people reading by the pool, on the beach, or even on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Reading is a form of entertainment that can take you to fictional worlds or past points in time.

Helps Self-Exploration
Books can be both an escape and an adventure. When you are reading, you have the opportunity to think about
things in new ways, learn about cultures, events, and people you may have never otherwise heard of, and can
adopt methods of thinking that help to reshape or enhance your identity. For example, you might read a
mystery novel and learn that you have a knack and interest in solving cases and paying attention to clues.
HOW TO LOVE READING ?
• 1. FIND A BOOK THAT INTERESTS YOU.
One of the best ways to get into reading books is to find a book that genuinely interests you. So whether it’s a thriller, romance, or even a
non-fiction book about your favorite hobby, make sure you choose something that will hold your attention from beginning to end.
If you’re unsure where to start, ask your friends or family for recommendations, check out online reviews, or browse through your local
bookstore or library. Once you’ve found a couple of potential options, give them a try and see which one you like best.

• 2. SET ASIDE TIME FOR READING BOOKS.

Another great way to get into reading is to set aside some dedicated reading time each day or week. Whether it’s 20 minutes before
bedtime or an hour on your lunch break, carving out some time in your schedule will make it easier to sit down and read.
• 3. KEEP A READING JOURNAL.
Try keeping a reading journal if you’re looking for a more creative approach to reading. In your journal, you can write down your
thoughts about what you’re reading.

• 4. MAKE READING A SOCIAL ACTIVITY

One of the best ways to make reading more enjoyable is to turn it into a social activity. Whether you start a book club with your
friends or join an online reading group, being able to discuss what you’re reading with others can make the experience more
enjoyable
• 10. TAKE YOUR TIME
Finally, don’t forget that reading should be enjoyable – so take your time and savor each book you read. There’s no need to rush
through it just to say you’ve finished it. Instead, take your time to appreciate the story, the characters, and the author’s incredible
writing. Trust us; it’ll be worth it in the end!
