1. Define the following terms according to your understanding.
a. National artist - A National Artist in the Philippines is an individual recognized
for their significant contributions to Philippine arts, it is the highest honor in
the field. The President gives this recognition base on the recommendation
from the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission for
Culture and the Arts.
b. Manlilikha – it directly translates to "creator" but it refers to a National Living
Treasure, a prestigious title awarded to Filipino individuals or groups for their
mastery of traditional, folk art, exceptional technical and artistic excellence,
and commitment to cultural preservation. The government recognizes these
individuals as living repositories of the Philippines' intangible cultural heritage.
c. Indigenous art - Indigenous Art in the Philippines includes traditional
expressions like weaving, wood carving, basketry, jewelry making, and
architecture. It represents the unique cultural heritage and traditions of each
indigenous group, often incorporating symbolic elements reflecting their
beliefs, way of life, and connection to nature.
d. Pottery - is a traditional art form in the Philippines, involving clay-based
creations like burnay jars and mandeko jars. These earthenware pots are
used for storing rice and other items, with techniques varying across regions.
Decoration often features geometric patterns, animal and human figures, and
cultural symbols.
e. Culture – it consists of all of its inherited customs, institutions, and artistic
expressions that are passed from one generation to the next. Culture
encompasses norms of behavior, attire, language, religion, customs, and
artistic expression. It has been described as "the way of life for an entire
society."
2. Shape Up Your Mind (10 pts.)
1. What is GAMABA? What is its purpose?
2. Who are given the awards? Living person? Dead person? Why?
3. Why is the award limited to traditional or indigenous arts?

Answers:
1. GAMABA, or Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan, is a prestigious recognition in
the Philippines for individuals or groups designated as National Living
Treasures. It aims to acknowledge and preserve the Philippines' intangible
cultural heritage, recognize the exceptional skills of folk and traditional artists,
and encourage the transmission of these art forms to future generations,
inspiring their communities to continue practicing and learning these valuable
traditions.
2. Awards are given to living individuals or groups to support the continuation of
the art form, encourage active community practice, share knowledge, and
inspire younger generations.
3. GAMABA is a cultural organization that promotes traditional and folk arts in
the Philippines, which are prone to loss due to modernization and new
technology. GAMABA awardees serve as protectors, ensuring the continued
practice and appreciation of these valuable art forms. The Philippines also
recognizes outstanding individuals in broader artistic fields through the Order
of National Artists, which encompasses various disciplines.
In your region (where your school is located) write the names of persons whom you
believe is qualified to be a GAMABA awardee. Give the reason. (You can do research.)

A. Folk Architecture
Names: 1. Phil Fabiolas
2. Malaquias Narisma
Reasons: These two persons that I personally know is in-demand house maker
in our place. They have many clients from outside our residence and event made
it to travel in Cebu just to construct a house. From a simple hut to a big house,
they can make it in short time with a high quality outcome.
B. Weaving
Names: 1. Concepcion Renoblas
2. Ricarda Hermosisima
Reasons: In the field of basket weaving, I would recommend these two persons
who are famous weavers in Antequera, the Basket Capital of Bohol. Whom they
were feature in TV stations and vlogs where they showcased their expertise and
dedication in basket weaving, which they started as a hobby and source of
income but eventually dedicate their lives to preserve the art in weaving.
C. Carving
Names: 1. Arsenio Lagura
2. Felix Namang
Reasons: Arsenio Lagura is a known carver in Loboc. He not only contributed in
the tourism of carving industry, but also made a huge contribution in restoration
of the broken altar and retablo in Sta. Minica Church in Loboc, which took him
three years to made, with his team. On the other hand, Felix Namang is
someone I know personally whom I considered has a magic hand in terms of
wood carving, especially on furniture. He can make complicated designs our of
distorted woods.
D. Performing Arts
Names: 1. Samuel Penaso
2. Lutgardo Luza Labad
Reasons: Samuel Penaso, even at a young age, received several awards in
different countries, including Japan, Thailand, Austria, Germany, Singapore, New
York, Abu Dhabi and Berlin. He also represented the whole Philippines in 8th
Beijing Intl. Art Biennale, Exhibition Exchange in Hanoi Vietnam, and the Nippon
International Performance Art Festival in both 2005 and 2011. Sam has
participated in the Asian International Art Exhibition in Bandung,
Indonesia, ArTriangle in Malaysia, Young Art Philippines Europe Tour, and the
Asia Performance Art in Seoul Korea with his “Stripewalker” performance.
Penaso is one of the core members of Tupada Action and Media Art (TAMA), a
group of performance artists. On the other hand, Lutgardo Luza Labad is a multi-
talented theater actor, dancer, and singer. With his passion, he became a mentor
of different personalities in Bohol and made Kasing Sining a significant institution
in the province.
E. Literature
Names: 1. F. Jordan Carnice
2. Chrisylli Mitzi Ibaya
Reasons: F. Jordan Carnice is a creative writing graduate from Silliman
University and STI College, with published works in various publications. He has
received fellowships from writing workshops and served as a panelist twice at the
Taboan Writers Festival. Carnice won the poetry grand prize in the 2020 Cebu
Climate Emergency Literature and Arts Competition for his poem "There is Too
Much Light in this World." He has released two poetry collections and is a visual
artist. On the other hand, Chrisylli Mitzi Ibaya contributed to different write-ups in
the province, but she is more focused on poetry.
