CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the introduction, background, objectives, significance,

scope and delimitation, and definition of terms of the study.

Introduction

Tracer studies are frequently intended to follow changes at a singular level,

following an improvement intercession. For instance, a tracer study may be intended

to follow people who have gotten professional training to see if or how they utilize the

education or training they received, and how their lives progress over a long time.

A country's economy runs on the information and abilities of its people. The

necessities for abilities develop with outside ventures, innovative advances, and

globalization. To stay up with changes, individuals need to procure abilities to be

useful and make money and these can be accomplished through education.

Education is the main component for the strengthening of individuals for their

financial, political, and innovative turn of events. The learning conditions of advanced

education establishments should accept the perception of this in organizing their

course programs. With the end goal of value affirmation programs, higher education

establishments can contribute definitively by applying the standards of tracer study to

make a reasonable learning-strengthening climate for the ceaseless advancement of

past undergraduates. While numerous advanced education institutions give

preparation to various clients, most fail to remember them when they graduate and
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University
College of Industrial Technology 2

pass on the institutions' current circumstances without any means to reach them.

Employment upon graduation and over the long haul is, naturally, a significant need

for the huge larger part of our college undergraduates. The central mission of our

college keeps on being the formation of an open space of higher advancing inside a

deep-rooted point of view. This depends on the value of access and ought to be

viewed as a chance for the individual turn of events, permitting every one of those fit

for profiting from advanced education to incorporate better into the worldwide

technological society (Ramirez, et. al., 2014).

Each scholastic establishment will likely produce skilled and exceptionally

qualified graduates that can ultimately be serious in a local and global field. A tracer

study is an extremely useful asset that can give important data to assessing the

whereabouts and execution of the graduates in the work environment (Cuadra et al.,

2019).

Mechanical Technology students who are skilled with hand tools and a variety

of machine tools are responsible for the maintenance and repair of all kinds of

machines. Students are also involved in the construction and design of any kind of

machinery, from the industry's largest equipment to the most recent designs.

Students of Mechanical Technology are keen on figuring out how things work. They

are knowledgeable as well as inventive. Both composed and verbal relational

abilities, as well as authoritative capacities, are well-developed in them. Mechanical

Technology requires skilled operators of apparatus, especially machines, who can

BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University
College of Industrial Technology 3

work in an industrial setting or work environment.

This paper presents the profiles of BIT Mechanical Technology and the

application of their major of specialization to their actual jobs. It also attempts to

decide if the graduates of the said program continue to follow their preferred career

path.

Background of the Study

Graduates of the College of Industrial Technology are well-prepared to enter

the workforce in a variety of technical fields. This college offers programs in areas

such as automotive technology, construction management, electrical engineering

these programs, students gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment

and technology, as well as a strong foundation in technical theory and principles.

Graduates of the College of Industrial Technology are equipped with the technical

skills and knowledge needed to design, develop, and implement complex systems

and processes in a wide range of industries. They are also well-prepared to work

collaboratively with others, communicate effectively, and adapt to new technologies

and challenges. Graduates of this college are highly sought after by employers in

industries such as manufacturing, construction, automotive, and aerospace, among

others.

A tracer study is a method used to track the career paths and outcomes of

graduates of a particular educational institution or program. This study typically

BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University
College of Industrial Technology 4

involves surveying graduates to collect data on their employment status, job

satisfaction, income level, and other factors related to their professional development.

Tracer studies are valuable tools for evaluating the effectiveness of educational

programs and identifying areas for improvement. By tracking the outcomes of

graduates over time, institutions can gain insights into the strengths and weaknesses

of their programs and make adjustments as needed to better prepare students for

successful careers. Tracer studies also provide valuable information for current and

prospective students, as they can help individuals make informed decisions about

their educational and career paths based on the experiences of past graduates.

Overall, tracer studies are an important component of quality assurance in education

and a useful tool for promoting continuous improvement in educational programs.

Employability refers to the set of skills, knowledge, and personal qualities that

make an individual desirable to employers. In today's job market, employability is a

key factor in career success and is highly valued by employers. To be employable,

individuals need to develop a range of technical and soft skills, such as problem-

solving, teamwork, communication, and adaptability, that are relevant to their chosen

field. Additionally, a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn

and develop new skills can greatly enhance an individual's employability. It is

important for individuals to invest in their own employability by continuously

developing their skills and knowledge, seeking out relevant work experience, and

building a professional network. By doing so, they can increase their chances of
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University
College of Industrial Technology 5

securing meaningful and rewarding employment opportunities throughout their

career.

graduates from 2021 to 2022, as well as connecting the previous tracer study from

the graduates of the Academic Year 2018-2020, in order to obtain the employment

and demographic profiles of the respondents. A tracer study seeks out graduates of

educational institutions, previous scholarship grant recipients, past participants, and

other individuals to collect data and update information about them. In order to

establish and maintain a continuous feedback loop with their alma mater, some

studies follow graduates.

Additionally, this research can be utilized to generate, schedule, and make

decisions regarding curriculum expansion. The researchers are interested in

determining whether Batangas State University consistently contributes to the

expansion of the country's economy.

Definition of Terms

For a clearer understanding of the study, the following terms are defined:

Tracer Study - A type of research method used to track and follow the
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University
College of Industrial Technology 11

activities and outcomes of graduates or participants of an educational institution or

program. It involves gathering data about their employment status, job

performance, further education, and other related information to evaluate the

effectiveness of the educational program. (LJ Cuadra,2019). In this study, Tracer

Study is the title of the conducted research by the proponents in order for them to

remember the purpose of this study.

Alumni - Refers to individuals who have completed a course or graduated

from an educational institution. They are the main subjects of a tracer study. (AC

Albina, 2020). In this study, alumni perspectives and experiences play a crucial

role in evaluating the effectiveness of educational programs, assessing career

outcomes, and informing decision-making processes for institutional

improvements. Their feedback helps institutions maintain a strong connection with

their graduates and ensures that educational offerings remain relevant and

beneficial for future students.

Response rate - The percentage of individuals who participated in the

tracer study by responding to the survey or interview. It is calculated by dividing

the number of responses by the total number of individuals who were contacted.

(EO Badiru, 2016). In this study, Response Rate is important measure

for education surveys, and low response rates could potentially impact the validity

of estimates, analysis, and inference in education research.

Questionnaire - A tool used in the tracer study to gather data about the
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University
College of Industrial Technology 12

graduates' employment status, job performance, and other relevant information. It

usually consists of closed-ended and open-ended questions. (DK Shrestha, 2021).

Questionnaires plays an important role in our study by using a standardized

questionnaire, researchers ensure that all participants are asked the same set of

questions in a consistent manner. This helps maintain the integrity and reliability of

the data, allowing for meaningful comparisons and analysis.

Employment status - Refers to the current employment situation of the

graduates, whether they are employed, unemployed, or self-employed. (R

Hussmanns, 2007). In this study, employment status is key for the researchers to

know if the graduates are working or not.

Job satisfaction - A measure of how satisfied the graduates are with their

current jobs. It is usually measured using a Likert scale or a similar rating system.

(W Inayat, 2021). Job satisfaction, can serve as an indicator of how well the

educational institution prepared them for their careers. Satisfied alumni are more

likely to attribute their success and professional growth to their educational

experiences, indicating that the institution provided them with the necessary skills,

knowledge, and resources.

Gross Monthly Income - Gross Monthly Income is the total amount of

money received in a given month before any deductions, including taxes (indeed,

2023). In this study, Gross monthly income is monitored by the researchers as it

shows all sources of money that you receive over the course of a month, including
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University
College of Industrial Technology 13

but not limited to regular wages, earnings from side jobs and investments.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF LITERATURE

This chapter presents the conceptual and research literature from published

and authored scholarly articles, as well as previous institutional studies and

researches of both local and foreign sources, and the synthesis of the study.

These key institutions provided the researchers a solid foundation and backbone

of concepts that led to synthesis of the needed tracer study to know the

employment status of Mechanical Technology Graduates of Batangas State

University Batch 2021-2022.

Conceptual Literature

Systems of education and training play a crucial role in ensuring that all

individuals have access to opportunities to continuously develop their skills from a

perspective of lifelong learning, allowing them to adapt to rapidly shifting

requirements and conditions in the labor market. The configuration of education

and training systems, employment policies, and investments are decided upon by

policymakers in charge of training and the labor market. The nature and content of
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University
College of Industrial Technology 14

the training courses that will be offered are decided by training institutions.

Individuals and their families choose their own education and training, while

businesses decide how to improve employees' skills. (Tracer Studies Evaluating

the Impact of Training Programmes, 2017)

According to the article "Exploring the Tracer Study in Career Centre

Website in Indonesia" (2013), universities use tracer studies to assess the degree

to which their students have benefited from the educational process. Additionally,

Tracer study provides college students with information regarding graduation year,

job waiting period, first salary, relevance of curriculum to work, and compliance

with major work courses. Graduate tracer studies are a valuable resource for

educational planners because they can help them evaluate the outcomes of higher

education and training institutions. This information can be used to improve the

institution's quality assurance content and minimize any content, delivery, or

relevance deficiencies in a particular educational program.

Qualifications, knowledge, skills, personal characteristics, and other tangible

and intangible factors all play an important role in an individual's employability.

Gaining employability skills and attributes is important for graduates because,

while numerous companies are willing to sponsor training to help employees

enhance advanced job-related skills, it has been reported that employers are not

willing to help people develop skills that are considered a basic requirement for

employment. Because employability has a significant impact on any career,

BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University
College of Industrial Technology 15

research into graduate employability has piqued the interest of researchers,

individual graduates, institutions of higher learning, and employers. (Pheko, M. and

Molefhe, K., 2017)

According to Farid Noor Romadlon and Muhammad Arifin (2021) Colleges

are empowering endeavors to work on their general quality, including their alumni's

profiles. One of the indicators of graduates' profile quality is graduates' absorptivity

in industries or users. The purpose of this tracer study was to collect data from

recent graduates on the degree of job-related compatibility of acquired knowledge

and skills. This program was implemented with the university's awareness in order

to empower graduates. The program's common issues included collecting data

from graduation books, which reduced the accuracy of the data, numerous

telephone numbers that could not be contacted or were not active, respondents'

time spent answering questionnaires over phone calls, and a lower than expected

total number of respondents. This is because the respondents (alumni) may lose

interest in the tracer study because the procedures used can be time-consuming.

There are four stages to the tracer study method: 1) preparation, 2) execution, 3)

examination, and 4) evaluation of the outcomes. The updating of graduate data,

the creation of questionnaires, and the scheduling and training of invited surveyors

are all part of the preparation phase. The deployment, monitoring, and remaining

processes make up the implementation phase, while the analysis stage involves
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University
College of Industrial Technology 16

analyzing and recapitulating the questionnaire. The program's overall reporting and

assessment stage is the final evaluation phase. It is anticipated that this method

will allow for the tracking of all graduates.

The College of Industrial Technology is a technologically-based center

steadfast in the promotion of dynamic, excellent, and globally competitive

individuals in line with the University’s Vision and Mission. The college started in

Academic Year 2001-2002 and was formerly named College of Industrial

Technology and Engineering offering Bachelor of Industrial Technology courses

major in Computer Technology, Electrical Engineering courses, under the

Research Literature

This provides information needed in conducting a tracer study about the

graduates of BIT major in Mechanical Technology regarding their general and

employment profile. This also gives information about the factors that affect the

employment of the graduates in the country.

In the tracer study conducted by Arevalo et.al (2016) on Bachelor of

Industrial Technology graduates of Batangas State University aims to determine

the status of the alumni after their graduation. The study uses descriptive methods,

emails, and Facebook to gather information and data to their study. The

respondents of the study were 80 Bachelor of Industrial Technology Major in

Mechanical Technology grates from 2011 to 2014. To interpret the data, the

researchers use statistical processing of data, such as frequency and percentage

distribution. Most of the respondents were male, 23 years of age and majority of

them are single. According to the data of the study, most of the respondents were

employed and currently showing their skills and knowledge in different kinds of

industry. In terms of their monthly salary, six of the respondents says that they are

receiving 15,000 per month.

According to the study conducted by Lajara et.al (2019), the research

utilized a survey questionnaire and descriptive method to analyze the status of

Bachelor of Industrial Technology major in Mechanical Technology graduates of

batch 2014 to 2018. Results showed that the majority of respondents were males,

mostly single, and belonged to the age range of 21-23. The study also found that

most respondents lacked training and advanced studies and were employed

locally. Furthermore, the year of graduation was identified as a significant factor in

employment. The data was processed using statistical methods such as frequency

and percentage distribution.

Damotharan et al. (2012)'s study, Tracer Study on AIMST University

Students Using Data Mining, was an approach that was widely used by most

organizations, particularly educational institutions, to truck and keep track of their

BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University
College of Industrial Technology 18

students after they graduated. Through tracer studies, an institution can evaluate

the quality of education provided to their graduates by learning about their

placements and social standing, which can then be used as a benchmark in

producing more qualified and competitive graduates. This tracer study primarily

focused on AIMST University, a leading private university in Peninsular Malaysia's

northern region. This tracer study used SPSS software as one of the primary

methods to produce a relevant model of all the students' enrollment as well as

graduating students' based on the data supplied by the Students and Records

Divisions of AIMST University. Because the data sets contained missing values,

RSIP methodology was applied to the data sets to ensure the data transformed

into quality and usable data sets. These data sets are used in the Data Mining

approach in modeling techniques to analyze data and identify patterns.

In the study of Ebreo et al. (2013) entitled of the status of the College of

Industrial Technology, the present study consists of personal information of the

respondent, education profile of the graduate, employment being assessed by the

Bachelor of Industrial graduates, and the relevance of course and degree to their

first job. It was done to investigate Lasallian CPAs' initial career moves, changes,

transitions, and personal future career plans for the aforementioned inclusive

years. To represent each stratum property, proportional stratified random sampling

was used. Respondents were primarily recruited via electronic mail. The

responses' data were analyzed using binomial testing for hypotheses and

descriptive statistics for the rest of the data. The findings revealed that the majority

of CPAs initially chose to work at an auditing firm and had a limited number of

transitions, with such transitions being caused by psychological factors and their

future plans to travel abroad.

Andal et al. (2014) conducted a study titled "Performance Evaluation of

Batangas State Instrumentation and Control Engineering Alumni University as the

foundation for an outcome-based education program "is to assess the performance

and competitiveness of BatStateU's ICE alumni. The alumni were tracked down

based on their age, civil status, gender, region of origin, location, year of

graduation, and reason for taking the course. The descriptive method was used in

the study, as well as an adapted questionnaire of engineering performance and

attributes. The questionnaire was constructed and validated by Ma'am Realiza

Mame and Engr. Divina Gracia Ronquillo. Following that, it was distributed to ICE

graduates via Facebook, emails, and some were formally sought in order to

answer the questionnaire. The questionnaire was completed by 40 ICE graduates

and another 10 supervisors to assess the performance of ICE alumni working in

their industry. Lalican's "Tracer Study of Agriculture Graduates" study evaluated its

curriculum and the relevance of its output to the current situation. UPLB's College

of Agriculture tracked down its graduates. What they are doing employed, as well

as their perceptions of their job, were taken into account Employers, on the other

hand, evaluated the graduates as well. Curriculum taken, years it took them to

finish the course, major field, region where they came from, general weighted

average (GWA), number of jobs held prior to the current job, employer, the

curriculum taken, and the year they graduated are the variables studied. According

to the study, employers are concerned with the graduates' major field, region of

origin, GWA, the nature of the curriculum followed, the number of jobs held by the

graduate prior to the current position, and the year they complete the course.

Employers frequently prefer specialists over generalists. Employers regard

graduates as effective, efficient, and cooperative.

Licudine et al. (2012) conducted a study titled "Graduate Tracer Study (G1s)

of Batch 2010 of Philippines College of Criminology Bachelor of Science in

Criminology" to determine the employability status of graduates of the Philippines

College of Criminology based on their employment, statuses, and relevance of

PCCR curriculum and student's competency received from the institution in relation

to current trends and demand in the employment sector. The following conclusions

are reached: The graduates are mostly males between the ages of 21 and 23. The

vast majority are single. There is also a clear relationship between their place of

residence, region of origin, and ethnic origin, with the majority residing in Manila

City, coming from the National Capital Region (NCR), and being of Tagalog ethnic

origin.

Radiologic Technology graduates from the Lyceum of the Philippines University

from 1997 to 2007 was conducted using a survey-structured questionnaire to

investigate the retrospective contribution of their education to their current work.

The study's objectives included determining the graduates' job-placement profile;

determining how relevant school-related factors like curriculum, instruction, faculty;

students services; organization and administration, physical plant, facilities, and

laboratories to job placement; determining what skills developed while at school

are considered useful in meeting the demands of their current work; and

developing a program that will improve the resiliency of graduates. There were

97/122 (80%) graduates who responded, with 78% (76/97) being certified licensed

radiographers.

De Castro et al. (2013), entitled Employment Status of Bachelor of Industrial

Technology Major in Mechanical Technology Graduates from 2007 to 2011, used a

descriptive method and a self-made questionnaire to collect data for the study. The
BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY

study's participants were 100 BIT Mechanical Technology graduates from 2007 to

2011. The result was interpreted using statistical techniques such as frequency

and percentage distribution.

Arevalo et al's research (2016), Tracer Study of Mechanical Technology

graduates from Batangas State University used a descriptive method and a self-

made questionnaire to collect data for the study from 2011 to 2015. The study's

participants were 134 BIT Mechanical College of Industrial Technology graduates

between 2011 and 2015. The result was interpreted using statistical data treatment

techniques such as frequency and percentage distribution.

Synthesis

The studies conducted by Arevalo et al. (2016), Lajara et al. (2019),

Damotharan et al. (2012), Ebreo et al. (2013), Andal et al. (2014), and Licudine et

al. (2012) aimed to assess the employability and competitiveness of graduates of

various educational institutions. Arevalo et al. (2016) and Lajara et al. (2019) used

descriptive methods to gather information and data from the graduates, while

Damotharan et al. (2012) used data mining approach in modeling techniques to

analyze data and identify patterns. Ebreo et al. (2013) used proportional stratified

random sampling and binomial testing for hypotheses to analyze the data, while

Andal et al. (2014) used a questionnaire validated by experts and distributed via

electronic mail and Facebook. Lastly, Licudine et al. (2012) used a tracer study to

determine the employability status of graduates of Philippines College of

BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University

Criminology.

The studies found that most graduates were employed, but some lacked

advanced studies or training. The year of graduation and the curriculum taken

were identified as significant factors in employment. These studies show the

importance of evaluating the quality of education provided by institutions to their

graduates by learning about their placements and social standing. The findings of

the studies can be used as a benchmark in producing more qualified and

competitive graduates. The results also highlight the significance of advanced

studies and training in improving the employability of graduates.

The use of various data gathering and analysis methods such as descriptive

methods, data mining, and tracer studies provides a comprehensive understanding

of the employability status of graduates, allowing institutions to make data-driven

decisions to improve their educational programs.

gathering. (Child Care & Early Education, 2022)

Respondents of the study

Graduates of the Bachelor of Industrial Technology with a Major in

Mechanical Technology program at Batangas State University Alangilan Campus

for the academic years 2021-2022 were the study's respondents. There’s no

sampling used in this study to determine the number of respondents since all the

BIT majors in Mechanical Technology were considered respondents to the study.

There were 45 Mechanical Technology graduates that became part of the

study with 100 percent retrieval.

Data Gathering Instrument

The researchers' primary data collection tools were structured questionnaire

provided by the University. It contains questions that allow us to determine the

demographic profile, educational background, and working status of the graduates

of Mechanical Technology Academic Year 2021-2022.

Construction of the Questionnaire. The questionnaire was provided by

the university through the office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs. The

proponents used Google Forms for the questionnaire, with the following parts:

pursuing other tertiary level qualification/advanced study.

Part III. Employability of graduates such as waiting time for the first job,

number of jobs since graduation, employment status, present occupation, gross

monthly income, present employer, nature of work, place of work, number of

employees in present company/organization, length of service in each job,

position/designation in each job.

Part IV. Graduates’ relevance to their first job graduates’ course/degree,

curriculum graduates had in college, competencies acquired from the university.

Part V. Graduates satisfaction in the present job namely Intention to stay,

Reason for staying on the job.

Data Gathering Procedures

The researchers requested permission to obtain the list of BIT Mechanical

Technology graduates in a letter addressed to the Records Office of the Batangas

State University - Alangilan Campus. The first procedure we did was to request

permission from the university and government agency to obtain Freedom of

Information under RA 10173, or the Data Privacy Act of 2012; the names of

graduates, the year they graduated, their field of specialization, their email

address, and their contact numbers were gathered, as stated in the request letter,

before passing survey-based questionnaires to the selected respondents from

Academic Year 2021-2022 through the email they used at school.

BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY
The National Engineering University
College of Industrial Technology 27

On January 30, we asked for validation for our survey in preparation of its

dissemination. We distributed the questionnaires on January 31 and on the same

day, we got one respondent. When we noticed that the response rate to our email

survey was slowing down, we used our second option, which was to message

students on their social media accounts through Facebook Messenger. We keep

progressing every day, but we are behind schedule. So, we came up with this idea

where we asked our research adviser if a researcher could join the former group

chat of the respondents to distribute the survey forms there, as it would be more

easily seen by them compared to our private messages being filtered. Since our

intention was approved, one of us messaged them every day to remind them to

answer our survey.

On March 29, we successfully completed our desired number of

respondents within 58 days, so we no longer needed to go to their respective

homes. The internet, the Batangas State University Library, and other related

sources provided the necessary materials and references for this study.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The gathered data from questionnaires were tallied, tabulated, and

subjected to the following statistical tools:

Frequency, Percentage, and Rank. These tools were used to present and

analyze the profile of the graduates, graduates’ reasons for taking the course,

employability of graduates, and graduates’ source of information about their first

job,

Mean and Composite Mean. These statistical treatments were used to

determine the relevance of graduates to the competencies acquired from the

University and graduates’ satisfaction in the present job.

Based on a survey conducted, 35 individuals expressed their intention to

stay in their current job, which accounts for 77.78% of the respondents. This

indicates a strong inclination towards continuing their current employment. On the

other hand, 10 individuals answered negatively, which represents 22.22% of the

participants.

While this percentage may seem relatively low, it still signifies a

considerable number of individuals who may be contemplating a job change. It is

worth noting that several factors can contribute to an individual's decision to stay or

leave their current job, including job satisfaction, work-life balance, salary and

benefits, growth opportunities, and more. However, for those who have expressed

their willingness to stay, it could be attributed to their positive experiences in their

current workplace, such as supportive management, engaging work, and a

welcoming work culture.

5.2 Reasons for Staying in their Present Job. Presented in Table 22 is

the graduates’ reasons for staying in the present job.

According to the table, the majority of graduates stay in their jobs because it

is related to their special skill. Salary and wages, related to course of study and

proximity to residence, skill development and passion, good experience,

experience, contract, just not to be idle, and none were followed by salaries and

wages.

This means that BIT mechanical graduates prefer to stay in their current

jobs because they frequently encounter difficult or challenging tasks that help them

improve their skills. They thrive on variety in their jobs as technicians or

machinists. Wages and salaries are deemed necessary in order for them to survive

and live a decent life. Another reason for respondents' continued employment is its

relevance to their special skills. Obviously, an employee would not change jobs if

they were unrelated. They will always want to move on to a job where they can

expand their skills and advance professionally.
