I don’t have any prior knowledge about the military, especially in counseling of
military. But while we are interviewing our interviewee for counseling, Retired
Remaster Sergeant in 2nd Lieutenant Rodel S. Oyando. Through our interview with
him, he gave us advice if we want to be in the military. Counseling is one of the
hardest things to do because you will sort out emotions and feelings and fix the
problem or sort out the problem. Having to counsel someone higher than us is an
opportunity because we can know what they will do in a certain situation and their
feelings and a little bit of their experiences too. I can say that we did a great job
interviewing him because he responded very well to our questions created by our
member, Jan Mark Guimbuayan, therefore we did a good job interviewing him
about military and counseling. I realized that counseling is hard because you will
need to talk about the problem and what the person feels. Therefore, it is essential
that retired army personnel receive proper care and support, both from the
government and society, for their contribution to the country.

Counseling can have a great impact on one another because it can change people’s
feelings in a few interviews or talk to talk on another person, whether negative or
positive but having to counsel a person must have a positive impact on the person.
Counseling is used to advice and support that is given to people to help them deal
with problems, make important decisions, and other things. I just realized that
being a counselor is hard, especially if the person that you talking to is hard to
communicate with or hard-headed. Counseling is an enjoyable experience to have
as a learning student.

Counseling is to empower clients to gain self-awareness, resilience, personal
growth, and fulfilment and to overcome challenges and adversity in life. Through
my training, I understand that counseling refers to a process of providing guidance,
support, and advise to individuals facing emotional or psychology challenges,
mental health issues, personal growth, relationship problem or any difficulties that
affect their daily life. There are many who have sacrificed their lives for the
defense of the other country and often they sacrifice their own safety and well-
being while serving. Moreover, retirement from the military can bring a new set of
challenges. Retired army personnel may have to adapt to civilian life, find a new
job, and make a new social circle. They may also face physical and mental health
challenges resulting from their service, such as Post Traumatic Disorder (PSTD) or
physical injuries. Therefore, it is good to interview military personnel.

A torrent of worries swept through my mind, “What if I say something wrong?
What if the interviewee says nothing? What if the video doesn’t work? And what
can we talk about?” But as those worries sprang to life, I remembered some wise
advice that helped alleviate my anxiety. Within assigned readings for my
techniques class, I have learned that to succeed you have to fail. As blunt as that
sounds, it is an accurate statement regarding counselors. I will not instantly
become a great counselor and I will inevitably fail and make many mistakes during
my training. But these mistakes will help pave my way towards becoming a
successful counselor. Prior to beginning my 30 minutes counseling session, I
repeated this phrase repeatedly while practicing some deep breathing to calm
myself down. This mind set and relaxation process helped me appear calm and
collected, even though on the inside I was a nervous mess. After pulling myself
together, I began the counseling session by asking my client what she would like to
discuss. She had concerns regarding her current finances and her future financial
stability. Furthermore, she believed that her counseling profession was grossly
underappreciated and did not receive adequate compensation. I practiced the
‘L.U.V’ technique of listening, understanding, and validating so she would realize
she was truly being heard. Additionally, I maintained an attentive posture by
leaning slightly forward in my seat and used a slow, softly toned voice to
encourage her to tell me more. I think my voice is one of my greatest strengths as a
counselor. I always try to speak in a slow, clear, soft, and tentative manner so that
the client does not feel intimidated or pressured.

This video has led me to understand and practice the techniques used in
counseling. Prior to this class, I had little knowledge of the process of Counseling.
Even though there were several skills that will be used for counseling in the future,
the technique I enjoy learning about was helping the client determine what they
wish to be the outcome and allowing them to determine the action steps to reach
their goal. I tried to base my techniques on the limited knowledge I had received
from the class so far and other assumptions I had made about counseling. The first
video was short, and I did not understand what to say to the client after they were
done speaking about their challenges. Accordingly, in this video I stopped and
started a couple of times. However, after a while I was able to get all the way
through the video.

The counselor must obtain their core values, dynamics, and documentation
efficiency. For me, counselling impact me in a positive way due to upcoming
standards, more tighten structure framework for all counseling organization to
ensure less error with client lives. In addition, my huge impact was a becoming a
better commuter listener, and understanding about client’s situation, and
communicator listener, and understanding about client’s situation. I give each
client respect, honesty and communication that has an impact on my counseling
performance and ensures all my clients is well taken care.

Over the course of practicum, I have had a unique experience working with my
different youth in different settings. Throughout this time, I also learned about
myself that lead me to reevaluate my counseling path. As a counseling student, I
was familiar with the concept of group counseling, however, it was a different
learning experience working with resistant youth, specially that was not interested
in counseling services. Having in my back of my mind in helping others, I have
attempted to help and make the client feel better, specially seeing the clients
struggle was really a challenge that there was a desire to help and suggest a
solution or comfort, but most of the time wasn’t able due to the group dynamics. It
was far more difficult and complicated that I show more content as a student my
goal is to fully explore my learning experience.

Personal appearance: the company will constantly look to the officers and NCOs
for what right looks like. You must set the standards for the soldiers to follow and
ensure those standards are always being met through NCO channels. I also expect
you to make recommendations to me as we have a working relationship.
