The Present Continuous

★ Structure - Cấu trúc

(+) S + am / is / are + V-ing + O eg: She is studying English in her room

(-) S + am / is / are + not + V-ing + O eg: He is not sleeping in the class

(?) Am / is / are + S + V-ing + O? eg: Are you doing homework exercises?

Note: am not = ain’t

★ Usage - Cách sử dụng

1. activities happening at the time of speaking - hành động đang xảy ra tại thời
điểm nói

- My mother is preparing for the dinner in the kitchen

- My brother is doing his homework in the living room
- Ann is trying to close the window to avoid being broken
- She is listening to her favourite music and doing her homework peacefully

2. activities happening around the time of speaking - hành động đang xảy ra xung
quanh thời điểm nói

- They are building the house right next to my house

- The doctor is diagnosing for a patient in the room
- I am looking for a job. (Tôi đang tìm kiếm một công việc)
Ta hiểu tả ngay tại lúc nói người nói đang không đi nộp hồ sơ hay để tìm việc mà trong thời
gian đó (có thể bắt đầu trước đó cả tháng) người nói đang tìm kiếm một công việc. Nhưng khi
muốn nói chung chung rằng điều gì đang xảy ra xung quanh thời điểm đó ta cũng sử dụng thì
hiện tại tiếp diễn.
- I am working for HDC company. (Tôi đang làm việc cho công ty HDC)
Tương tự như câu trên, “làm việc cho công ty HDC không phải mới bắt đầu mà đã bắt đầu
trước đó rồi. Nhưng người nói muốn diễn đạt rằng sự việc đó đang diễn ra.

3. Complaint - phàn nàn về ai hoặc điều gì đó – always

- She is always going to school late

 - She is always staying up late every night
- he is always lazy of studying, so that is the reason why he failed the test
- You are always spending money on trivial items on Shopee, it’s too wasteful!

4. Predict in near future - Dự đoán trong tương lai gần (đã lên kế hoạch sẵn)

- She is taking her children to the zoo tomorrow

- They are going to Yen So Park to go for a picnic at weekends
- My friends is going to Vinpearl Aquarium with her family in Nha Trang

★ Hints - Dấu hiệu nhận biết

- Động từ: be V-ing ; động từ chỉ hành động mang tính giật gân như “ look ; listen ;
be careful ; watch ; look out ; watch out ; be patient ; keep silent …” (những động
từ này thường đi liền với dấu chấm than “ ! ”

- They are sleeping in the bedroom

- Be careful ! Someone is following you
- Keep silent ! The baby is sleeping
- Watch out ! The train is coming

- Trạng từ chỉ thời gian: Now ; At present ; Right now ; At the moment ; While ; At +
specific time …

- they are playing the piano at the moment

- She is studying English right now
- She is doing exercise at 5a.m
★ ing principle - Quy tắc thêm “ing”

- Quy tắc chung: thêm đuôi “ing” vào sau động từ

- Quy tắc riêng:
+ Tận cùng là chữ “e” → bỏ “e” + “ing”
Eg:

write → writing type → typing come → coming

love → loving have → having dance → dancing
date → dating arrange → arranging race → racing
change → changing believe → believing receive → receiving
reduce → reducing cycle → cycling use → using
 + Từ 1 âm tiết - 1 phụ âm - 1 nguyên âm (1.1.1) → nhân đôi phụ âm + “ing”
Eg:

stop → stopping begin → beginning scan → scanning

get → getting travel → travelling run → running
put → putting permit → permitting
beg → begging prefer → preferring

+ Tận cùng là “ie” → y + “ing”

Eg:

die → dying lie → lying

★ Exception - Ngoại lệ: những động từ không bao giờ ở dạng V-ing

Những từ KHÔNG chia ở thì hiện tại tiếp diễn:
