NARRATIVE TEXT
Narrative text is a type of text that tells a story. This type of narrative includes
elements such as characters, plot, setting, and conflict to create a narration that presents an

event or experience. Its purposes can vary, ranging from entertaining to conveying specific
messages to readers or listeners.
A. Type Text Narrative
1. Fairy Tales (Dongeng)
Fairy tales are traditional stories, often rooted in folklore, that typically
feature magical elements, mythical creatures, and fantastical events. They often
convey moral lessons and entertain through imaginative narratives involving
characters such as princesses, witches, and talking animals. Fairy tales have been
passed down through generations, transcending cultural boundaries, and are
known for their enchanting and timeless qualities.
2. Folktale (Cerita Rakyat)
A folktale is a traditional oral story passed down from generation to
generation. These stories encompass cultural, moral, and mythical elements that
reflect the values of a specific community.
3. Fabel (Cerita Binatang)
A fable is a short story that uses animals or inanimate objects as characters
with anthropomorphic traits (behaving like humans). Fables often convey moral
lessons or teachings through the actions of these characters.
4. Legend (Legenda)
Legend is a story passed down from the past, often related to heroic
figures, myths, or miracles. Legends usually have a historical basis but may also
include elements of fantasy.

C. Generic Structure
1. Orientation which sets the scene and introduces the characters.
2. Complication which provides problems faced by the characters.
3. Resolution which states how the problems are resolved, for better or worse.
4. Re-orientation (optional) completion of the story that contains a moral message.
D. Language Features Narrative Text
a. Adverb of time
In narrative text, an adverb of time is used to provide information about
when an event took place. Examples of adverbs of time in narratives include “one
day,” “previously,” “later,” and “finally.” For instance, “One day, on a sunny
morning, the main character began their adventure.” and “once upon a time.”
b. Past Tense
In a narrative text, the use of past tense (waktu lampau) is common as we
are recounting events or stories that have already occurred. Examples of past tense
in narratives involve past tense verbs such as “was,” “were,” “had,” “did,” and
verbs ending in “-ed”. For example: “She walked to the market and bought some
fruits.”
c. Time Conjunction
Time conjunctions are often used in narrative texts to indicate the sequence
or timing of events. Some common time conjunctions include “before,” “after,”
“while,” “when,” and “as.” These conjunctions help establish the chronological
order of actions or occurrences in a story.
For instance: “Before she left the house, the rain started pouring,” or “As
the sun set, they gathered around the campfire.”
d. Direct Sentence
A direct sentence in a narrative text is a straightforward statement that
conveys information or describes an action without using reported speech. For
example: “She opened the door and walked into the room,” or “The old man
smiled warmly at the children.”

mortals, there was a small kingdom on the slope of Mount Wayang in West Java. The
King, named Sang Prabu, was a wise man. He had an only daughter, called Princess Teja
Nirmala, who was famous for her beauty but she was not married. One day Sang Prabu
made up his mind to settle the matter by a show of strength.
After that, Prince of Blambangan, named Raden Begawan had won the
competition. Unfortunately, the wicked fairy, Princess Segara fell in love with Raden
Begawan and used magic power to render him unconscious and he forgot his wedding.
When Sang Prabu was searching, Raden Begawan saw him and soon realized that he had
been enchanted by the wicked fairy. The fairy could not accept this, so she killed Raden
Begawan. When Princess Teja Nirmala heard this, she was very sad. So a nice fairy took
her to the Kahyangan.

A long time ago, there lived on the island of Bali a giant-like creature named Kbo
Iwo. The people of Bali used to say that Kbo Iwo was everything, a destroyer as well as a
creator. He was satisfied with the meal, but this meant for the Balinese people enough food
for a thousand men.
Difficulties arose when for the first time the barns were almost empty and the new
harvest was still a long way off. This made Kbo Iwo wild with great anger. In his hunger, he
destroyed all the houses and even all the temples. It made the Balinese turn to rage.
So, they came together to plan steps to oppose this powerful giant by using his
stupidity. They asked Kbo Iwo to build them a very deep well, and rebuild all the houses and
temples he had destroyed. After they fed Kbo Iwo, he began to dig a deep hole.
One day he had eaten too much, he fell asleep in the hole. The oldest man in the
village gave a sign, and the villagers began to throw the limestone they had collected before
into the hole. The limestone made the water inside the hole boiling . Kbo Iwo was buried
alive. Then the water in the well rose higher and higher until at last it overflowed and formed
Lake Batur. The mound of earth dug from the well by Kbo Iwo is known as Mount Batur.

offered her own son’s life to save her nephew.
They ran back to the house and called for help. All men in the village fetched thick
sticks and went back with her into the forest. When they got there, they saw something very
strange. Instead of eating the woman’s baby the wolves were playing with him.
