TM

Service Recommendation
• The ST-L and HD-L connections incorporate a hooked
thread design. This provides maximum structural
depend-ability for a flush OD connection. Both ST-L
and HD-L connections have metal-to-metal internal and
external pressure seals. This provides maximum pres-
sure integrity and seal dependability. The Atlas Bradford
ST-L and HD-L connections are, therefore, both recom-
mended for drilling and production applications where
maximum clearance is required. HD-L connection has a
higher compression rating than ST-L connection and
should be used when severe compression or bending
load resistance is required.

True Flush OD
• The ST-L connection has a true flush OD for maxi-
mum clearance.

15° Reverse Angle Torque Shoulder


• Provides protection against damage if overtorqued.
• Axial force generated by makeup torque energizes the
external metal seal.

External Metal Seal


• Seal is generated by radial interference, reducing the
effects of tensile load and back off.
• Capable of resisting API pipe body collapse pressure.
• Seal mechanism energized by external pressure.
• Seal integrity not affected by multiple trips.

Tapered Interference Thread


• Balanced design matches strength of pin and box.
• Tensile efficiency optimized.
• Thread body interference distributes thread loads more
evenly.
• Torque stored in thread body increases torque capacity
and helps prevent back off.

Hooked Premium Thread Form


• 45° stab and compression load flank stabs easily,
reduces cross threading.
• Negative 9° load flank prevents the possibility of
thread jump-out and insures predictable tensile
performance.
• Precision axial tolerances allow the thread body to
support compressive as well as tensile loads.

Two-Start Thread
• Twin lead makes up faster.
• Rubbing of the seal surfaces minimized, improving the
resistance to galling during makeup.

Optional TEFLON® Seal Ring


• The ST-L connection fully rated without the seal ring.
• Offered for those desiring a seal ring.

Internal Metal Seal


• Seal is generated by radial interference, reducing the
effects of tensile load.
• Capable of resisting API pipe body internal pressure.
• Seal mechanism energized by internal pressure.
• Seal integrity not affected by multiple trips.

Swaged and Bored Pin I.D.


• Guarantees a uniform and concentric radial seal area
which is required to insure the primary seal integrity.
• Bore diameter exceeds API standard drift diameter or
alternate drift diameter per on applicable sizes and
weights.

ST-L Connection Data Table Notes:


1. ST-L connection pressure ratings are equal to the API pipe body rating for minimum internal yield and collapse.
2. For application with bending both tensile and compressive joint strength must be evaluated. Contact Grant Prideco for application
information. Bending efficiency is equal to the lower of the tensile or compressive efficiency.
3. Joint efficiency is calculated by dividing the connection critical area by the pipe body area.
4. ST-L connection tensile joint strength is calculated by multiplying the critical area times the material yield strength.
5. ST-L connection compressive joint strength is equal to 60% of the tensile joint strength.
6. ST-L connection reference minimum parting load is the ultimate strength or parting load of the connection. These values are offered for refer-
ence only. The connection should never be subjected to loads in excess of the joint strength. Tubular designs should incorporate an appropriate
design factor.
7. Reference string length is calculated by dividing the joint strength by both the plain end weight and air and a 1.4 design factor. These values are
given for reference only and do not include other load factors such as bending, buoyancy, temperature, load dynamics, combined loads, etc.
8. ST-L connection designs are optimized for each size and weight and are, therefore, not interchangeable.
9. High Collapse-95 is not an API grade. An ultimate tensile strength of 105,000 psi was used for calculations in this table. This value is typical of
the industry, but may vary from mill to mill. 31
