1. Differentiate insect pest vs. beneficial insect.
- Insects can be beneficial or detrimental to all different types of crops. Insects
that are commonly seen in agricultural fields can be classified into two; the insect pests
and the beneficial insects. Insect pests are organisms that cause harm or damage to
crops, livestock, structures, or humans. They may consume or damage plants, transmit
diseases, contaminate food, or cause discomfort or harm in other ways. They can also
cause economic losses in agriculture, forestry, and other industries. They reduce crop
yields, decrease the quality of harvested products, and increase production costs due to
the need for pest control measures. Common insect pests include aphids, caterpillars,
locusts, beetles, and mosquitoes. Beneficial insects are organisms that provide valuable
services to humans, ecosystems, or agriculture. They may pollinate plants, control
populations of pest species, decompose organic matter, or serve as a food source for
other organisms. Examples of beneficial insects include bees, ladybugs, lacewings,
predatory wasps, and certain species of beetles and flies.
