Introduction to Walmart:-
Walmart is one of the world’s largest retailers, with over 10,000 stores and clubs in 28
countries, and a revenue of over $500 billion. Walmart is a mega-retailer that’s known for its
wide variety of products and affordable prices. They have everything from groceries to
electronics, clothing to home goods. It’s like a one-stop shop for all your needs. Walmart has
stores all over the world, including in Pakistan. They’re known for their tagline “Save Money.
Live Better.” Which emphasizes their commitment to providing value for their customers. As for
their product packaging, they have their own private label brands with distinctive packaging
designs. Walmart is definitely a memorable brand, and their adaptability is evident in how
they’ve expanded their offerings over the years. They also have an online presence, making it
convenient to shop from the comfort of your own home. One of the keys to Walmart’s success is
its advanced information system, which enables the company to manage its vast network of
stores and supply chain operations efficiently. Walmart is a retailer that operates grocery stores,
supermarkets, hypermarkets, department and discount stores, and neighborhood markets. The
company’s stores offer grocery and consumables, health and wellness, technology, office and
entertainment, hardline, apparel and home categories at everyday low prices.

HOW WALMART USES MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM


Walmart uses management information system. A management information system (MIS)
is a computerized database that stores and organizes information that is used by managers.
Here are some points on how Walmart uses a management information system (MIS):

1- Inventory Management:Walmart uses an MIS to track and manage its vast


inventory. It helps them optimize stock levels, reduce wastage, and ensure products
are available to meet customer demand.

2- Supply Chain Management: The MIS enables Walmart to efficiently manage its
supply chain. It helps them track shipments, monitor supplier performance, and
ensure timely delivery of products to their stores.

3- Sales and Customer Data Analysis: Walmart utilizes its MIS to analyze sales data
and customer information. This helps them identify trends, understand customer
preferences, and make data-driven decisions to enhance the shopping experience.

4- Pricing and Promotions: The MIS assists Walmart in determining optimal pricing
strategies and implementing effective promotional campaigns. It enables them to
analyze market trends, competitor pricing, and customer behavior to offer competitive
prices and attractive deals.

5- Employee Management: Walmart’s MIS supports various HR functions, such as


payroll, scheduling, and performance management. It helps streamline processes,
track employee productivity, and ensure efficient workforce management.

6- Financial Management: The MIS aids in financial planning, budgeting, and


reporting for Walmart. It provides real-time financial data, supports financial analysis,
and helps monitor the financial health of the company.
7- Decision-Making Support: Walmart’s MIS provides executives and managers with
timely and accurate information for decision-making. It generates reports,
dashboards, and analytics that assist in strategic planning, operational management,
and performance evaluation.
These are just a few ways in which Walmart utilizes a management information system to
enhance its operations and overall efficiency.

WALMART’S INFORMATION SYSTEM STRATEGY:-


Walmart’s information system strategy focuses on leveraging technology to enhance its
operations, improve customer experience, and drive business growth. They prioritize the
following key elements in their strategy:

1- Integration: Walmart aims to integrate its various information systems across


departments and functions. This integration allows for seamless data flow, improved
communication, and efficient decision-making.

2- Data Analytics: Walmart recognizes the value of data analytics in gaining insights
and making informed decisions. They invest in advanced analytics tools and
techniques to analyze large volumes of data, identify patterns, and optimize various
aspects of their business.

3- Supply Chain Optimization: Walmart’s information system strategy emphasizes


optimizing their supply chain through real-time tracking, inventory management, and
demand forecasting. This enables them to minimize costs, reduce wastage, and ensure
products are available when and where customers need them.

4- E-commerce and Online Presence: With the growing importance of e-commerce,


Walmart focuses on enhancing its online presence and digital capabilities. They invest
in information systems that support online shopping, personalized recommendations,

WALMART’S INFORMATION SYSTEM:-


Customer Relationship Management:-
 Generate loyal customers by gathering valuable information using CRM
software.
 To evaluate the customer’s needs and expectations.
 To clear the objectives and job description to operate the CRM system.
 To improve customer service relationship and assist in customer retention and
drive sales growth.
Supply Chain Management:-
 Walmart plays a vital role as a distributor( wholesale).
 It helps in setting up an effective supply chain to adopt more information system.
 Supply chain spans the connections to acquire production, deliver products and
services in our global economy.
 Walmart uses Electronic data interchange(EDI) system for procurement.
 EDI is an electronic data interchange system use to transfer data through I
internet.
 EDI makes it very easy to deliver products effectively.

RFID Tags:-
 Walmart deployed a radio frequency identification (RFID) at its distribution
system.
 RFID deal with the whole process from production to sales of the product with a
tiny chip.
 After RFID, the tracking of inventories become much more effective.
 RFID was able to link into the point of sale (POS) and Electronic data exchange
(EDI) systems.

INFORMATION SYSTEM AND ECOSYSTEM:-


1- Database system, Data center and BI:-

 Biggest retailer, 20,000 stores 28 countries


 Biggest private cloud, process more than 2.5 petabytes of data every hour
 Data Café – Arkansas and Bentonville.
 Sate of the art analytics
 Helps analyse customers, competition, suppliers, market data and security
of data.
Example: Time saving 20-30 mins data process – e.g halloween.
2- Telecommunication, the internet and extranet:-
 Largest private integrated satellite commmunication network.
 Two way voice and one way video transmission from the headquaters.
 Connects through video and conferencing from management.
 Executive to have updates, control operations and company’s procedures.
 Downward, upward and horizontal communication.
 Feedback, goals, operational procedures, motivate employees etc.
 Irrigation system is cloud based –CSR
 Track real time data and monitor movement.
 Weather specific information
E.G Get on the shelf- Customers pitch their products.
3- Electronic and mobile Commerce and Enterprise System:-
 Cloud powered data –drives digital sales
 Jet.com – online shopping site
 Salsify – develop product content management platform for suppliers.
 Integrated with API – online products are uploaded via api within seconds.
 Donot rely on customers, focus on suppliers as well.
 SCM – three factors (Procurement & distribution, logistics & inventory
management).
 P & D – suppliers to keep prices low, eliminate middle man.
 L & IM – trucking system for stocks etc.

4- Information and DSS:-


 (GDMS) To connect with communities – focus on donations.
 Chemical intensive product Initiatives-track harmful chemicals
 WERCS/ Green WERCS– partnered screen chemicals (Checks and shows green,
red, yellow for suppliers to identify)
 Provides alternatives ingredients, eco-friendly
 KOSMIX – Walmart labs (E-commerce) (gift finder solutions)
 Developed social genome, also called shopycat (real-time data) –performs semantic
analysis – phrases, sentences, meaning to understand various trends, popular
products etc.
 Real link for DSS. Uses satellite to gather sales data from many stores.

5- Knowledge Management and Specialized IS:-

 Uses web-based & computer based learning – to teach food handling.


 3D animated technology to teach. E.g preparation of chicken
 RFID tags to their products and systems to improve inventory management,
location & stock replenishments.
 KMS – discussion forms, corps libraries, FAQs, training etc.
 Predominantly in HR- track , evaluate, framework, guidelines.
6- System Acquisition and Development:-
 Partners with different organizations e.g IBM for caching services, session
information of the servers, store and retrieve data.
 To give back GDMS& GGDS – provide to charities etc.
 Lab uses Agile development lifecycle in their software’s.

CONCLUSION:-
Prominent technology that Walmart have used are their SCM, where their delivery, stocking
and inventory are managed well by their employees, Data Café, a data analytics hub in their large
data farm where processing petabytes of data are effective solve problems, and IRL, that
effectively monitors product stock and improvement store management. No one could determine
that a retail company would have Integrated numerous systems and technology the improves
their day-to-day and future operations and decision-making. Walmart is a retail giant that focuses
on providing a wide range of products to its customers. With its strong emphasis on customer
satisfaction, efficient supply chain management, and innovative use of technology, Walmart has
become a leader in the industry. Through its information system strategy, Walmart leverages
technology to optimize operations, enhance the shopping experience, and drive business growth.
By integrating various systems, utilizing data analytics, and prioritizing cybersecurity, Walmart
continues to adapt and evolve in the ever-changing retail landscape. Overall, Walmart’s
commitment to innovation, customer-centric approach, and effective use of information systems
have contributed to its success and position as a global retail powerhouse.
