Teacher: Fane Cuffy

Form: 4
Subject: Integrated Science
Topic: Coordination
Subtopic: Nervous System
Date: 19th April 2024
Duration: 80mins

Objectives: Students will be able to:

1. Define the term Coordination
2. Identify the 2 systems that control Coordination
3. Describe purpose of the nervous system
4. Explain the role of neurons in the body
5. Differentiate between the Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous system
6. Describe how the nervous system works
7. Outline the importance of the synapse

Strategies: Lecture, discussion, flow chart , drawings

Resources: Integrated Science for CSEC Examinations, Printing sheets

Content:
Coordination: The cooperation between systems that control changes in the body (growth and
development, response)
Nervous system and Endocrine system control coordination

Purpose of nervous system: Allows us to respond to stimuli (changes) in environment

- Received stimulus is transmitted from receptors at detection point
- Specialized cells called neurons send messages as electrical impulses
- Body gives a response to stimulus

Structure of nervous system (refer to textbook page 194)

Central Nervous System: Brain and spinal cord> Decisions are made based on stimulus
Peripheral Nervous System: Neurons > Carry impulses between CNS and body

Types of neurons pg 193

● Sensory: sends impulses from receptors to CNS
● Motor: transfers information from CNS to effector organ
● Relay: connector between sensory and motor neurons
***(Nerves are bundles of neurons)
Class Activity: Students are to draw and label the sensory and motor neurons (page 193)
(Pg 195) Students will read up on how the nervous system works and create a flow chart
Activity is done on paper

Transmission between neurons

*Nerve cells are not joined together
● Synapse: space between 2 neurons. Triggered release of neurotransmitters
● Neurotransmitter: Chemical substance that transfers impulses across synapse

Introduction: Teacher does Hangman to introduce next topic (Coordination)

Transitional statement: Today we will be starting our next topic of Coordination

Development:
1. Teacher defines Coordination and lists the systems that controls it
2. Students attempt to describe purpose of nervous system
3. Teacher reinforces students description
4. Teacher refers Students to pg 194 to describe structure of nervous system
5. Students refer to page 193 to take notes on types of neurons
6. Students do class activity
7. Teacher states importance of synapse for neurons

Conclusion: Oral Review of objectives by random students

Evaluation:

1. What are the systems that control coordination?

2. How is the role of the motor neuron different from the role of the sensory neuron
3. A chef quickly pulls back his hand after accidentally touching the hot oven. Explain how
the nervous system was involved in this reaction.
