I. DEVELOP PARAGRAPHS FOR EACH TEXT TYPE
Develop paragraphs that illustrate each text type (narrative in literature, expository,
explanatory, factual and personal recount, persuasive, argumentative) (EN8WC-IIe-2.2)
II. Concept Notes
A text is a piece of writing that you read or create. The type of a texts depend on their
purpose, structure and language features.Texts are written for a variety of purposes, using
different forms and standards of composition. These forms of writing are known as text types.
Remember that the text types refer to the meaning the writing, and they should not be
confused with writing (or other materials) formats such book, article, letter, report, essay, etc.
What are the text types?
Narrative text entertains or informs readers by telling a story. It has to do with real-world
events and time, characterized by a sequencing of events. Narrative text deals with
the following:
A. fiction (fairy tales, novels, science fiction, horror or adventure stories, fables, myths,
legends, etc. )
B. non-fiction (newspaper, articles, reports, historical writings).
Literary text is a type of narrative that entertains or elicits an emotional response by creative
use of language and structure to create mental images.
Expository text identifies and characterizes phenomena. True and deliberate expository text
will focus on educating its reader. It gets to the point quickly and efficiently.
Examples: definitions, explications, summaries and essay, reviews or comments,
references, letters to the editor
Expository structures can be classified into five categories:
• Description, where the author describes a topics characteristics, features, attributes,
etc. and gives examples.
• Procedure or sequence: the author lists different activities in their chronological
order or enumerates items in a numerical order.
• Comparison: the author explains how two or more objects, events, experiences, are
alike and/or different.
• Cause-effect explanation: the author presents ideas, events in time, or facts as
causes and the resulting effect(s) in time.
• Problem-solution presentation: the author describes a problem and gives one or
more solutions to the problem.
Factual text endeavors to inform or instruct through the use of facts and information.
Examples: landscape descriptions, instructions on how to make or do something,
recipes, instructions, and manual.
Explanatory text- explains how or why something happens.
Examples: the life cycle of a frog, how gears work, explain labeled diagrams or flow
charts, a science experiment and its results.
Personal Recount - retells an activity or event that happened in your own life.
Example: diary, journal
Persuasive text is a factual text types that give a point of view. They are used to influence or
persuade others. It gives reasons for a point of view to try and convince others of it.
Example: A team’s argument for a debate
Argumentative text aims to change the readers’ beliefs. They often contain negative
qualities or characteristics of something/someone, or try to persuade their readers that an
object, product, idea is in some way better than others.It starts with the negation of a
statement which attributes a quality or characteristic activity to something or someone.
Examples: advertising texts, which try to persuade their readers that a product is
somehow better than others.
