The sector’s lack of knowledge, skills, and work experience puts them at as disadvantage. One
way to address this is through the Department of Education’s Senior High School (SHS)
program, ushered by the K-12 education reform. One of its components, the work immersion
program, provides students “real workplace” experience, giving students a set of technical-
vocational and livelihood skills that can help them make more informed career choices and
understanding of concepts relevant to their chosen field and the mastery of the core competencies
through formal instruction and rigorous hands-on training while in school. To supplement this,
they too are required to complete an 80-hour work immersion in establishments which demand
or offer services fit for the student’s course. The goal of this learning experience is to provide the
students with opportunities to be acquainted with authentic tasks or experiences, which they may
encounter in real-work setting. It also aims to help students gain mastery of skills and develop
work ethics.
