Teacher Reflection
My original goal in taking this course was to find out the best way to teach health at many
different levels. I also wanted to know how to write lesson plans for health since I had never
written them before. I wanted to make sure I knew the proper way to write them. I want to
make sure I understood why health teachers need to teach this subject to students. Two
pervious methods and strategies I used for teaching were lecture teaching I would have
students look at presentations that I create and have them remember what they saw after the
lesson is over. The second methods I used was online learning I would have student take their
assessment on their computer when they had time. I change these two methods because I
realized that doing the same thing for all students isn`t great. According to gilbert, sawyer,
and McNeill “when the teaching of the instructor`s style is compatible with the learning style
of the student the learner tends to retain more information, effectively apply it, and has a
better attitude toward the subject” (Gilbert et al., 2015). This is stating that a teacher`s teaching
helps keep the students engaged. My strategies changed because I wanted to make sure my
students learned from my lessons. I learned that making sure that the lesson fits all students they
will continue to be engaged and want to learn more. The changes that I will be making to my
teaching is having a universal teaching design that is suitable to all students. I also want to make
sure I have different types of assessments for my students. These changes are important to me
because I want all my students to be successful. Also having different methods of teaching is
important. As stated by Gilbert, Sawyer, McNeill “Using a variety of methods is important for
several reasons: it makes it more likely you will achieve your objectives. It may prevent
disruptive behavior.it may ensure participant interest. It is more fun for the presenter and learner.
Not all learners respond positively to the same methods” (Gilbert et al., 2015). These explain that
having different methods are important. I will measure the effectiveness of my changes by seeing
how well students do on assessments and by getting feedback from the students as well by letting
them have voice will ensure how well I am doing as a teacher. Another way to evaluate my
changes is by having my colleagues participate in my lessons to see how well they do with them
as well. Getting critical feedback from my coworkers that have work for many years will help
me to get the desired outcome I’m looking for. The outcomes I desire are positive feedback from
my students and coworkers. Another outcome I would like to see is student engagement. These
outcomes it will ensure that my teacher strategies are working the way I expected them to. Also.
by getting positive feedback from students will show me that I have an effect teaching style. For
the next time that I teach in a classroom:
1. Students will come first in the classroom.
2. I want to have a welcoming environment for students.
3. Make sure they understand the lesson being taught.
4. Give the opportunity to get more help for students.
5. Have universal worksheets for different students learning levels.
6. I will also make sure that students feel comfortable with talking about whatever is
bothering them.
The smart goal that I personally have is Students will recall 70% of the information that was
taught to them throughout the course.
In conclusion, based on everything that I have learned throughout this course the main thing that
will stick with me is methods of teaching and how they are delivered. Another thing that will
stick with me is the fact that there are also many ways to write a goal especially for a different
level. Also, goals are meant to have an outcome to them they are there for the teacher to be
ensured that what they desired for the students to learn has been learned. Also, by critiquing my
methods will also help me as a teacher. By critiquing my strategies as a teacher will show that I
am evolving and learning from my students and myself. It is crucial for teachers to adjust their
lessons. By making the adjustments needed to any lesson shows that change is good, and you
know what works for the students and what doesn’t work for. Overall, as a teacher making your
students your priority is important for their learning.
PART II: Self Care
Referring to my self-care plan my original plans were to meditate and listen to music when it
came to mind. When it came to body my plan was to consume healthier food. Emotions talk
about them and have others understand my feelings. Spirit read and pray continuing this
throughout the course. During the semester my plan did not go so well I realized. I did not
continue to follow my plans at midsemester. What worked in my plan was reading and
praying I continue to do this now as well. Another thing that did work was talking about my
feelings to my family for them to understand them. These worked because I was able to keep
a clear head and sense of myself. What did not work is meditating and eating healthier. These
two did not work because I did not keep up with them when I should have. Also, I never made
time to focus on my own self I only made time for work and school. In the future for me to
meet my goals I need to make sure I organize time for myself and organize time for me and
my family. My self-care needs to be taken seriously and to continue to be healthy I must make
sure I take initiative in what I really need for myself and my family. Another way in the future
I will stick to my plan is making sure that my plans are able to be done. In the future, I also
want to make sure my family is aware of my plans, so they keep me on track, and I don’t lose
track of my goals or plans for myself.
