The Parable of the Sower
Mark 4:13-9
4 And again He began to teach by the sea. And a great multitude was gathered to Him, so that He got into a boat and
sat in it on the sea; and the whole multitude was on the land facing the sea. 2 Then He taught them many things by
parables, and said to them in His teaching:3 “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 And it happened, as he
sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds [a]of the air came and devoured it. 5 Some fell on stony
ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. 6 But when
the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. 7 And some seed fell among thorns; and
the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no [b]crop. 8 But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop
that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
9 And He said [c]to them, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
The Sower:
14 The sower sows the word.
Deuteronomy 4:9-11
9 Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they
depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren, 10 especially
concerning the day you stood before the Lord your God in Horeb, when the Lord said to me, ‘Gather the people to
Me, and I will let them hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they
may teach their children.’
Deuteronomy 6:6
“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.
Deuteronomy 8:3
So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did
your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives
by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
Psalm 107:20
He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.
Psalm 130:5
I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, And in His word I do hope.
John 1:1-3
The Eternal Word
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with
God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life,
and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [a]comprehend it.
John 6:63
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
Wayside:
Mark 4:15
15 And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and
takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.
2 Corinthians 11:13-15
13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder!
For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also
transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.
2 Timothy 4:2-4
2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all
longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but
according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves
teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
1 Timothy 6:20
Guard the Faith
O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of
what is falsely called knowledge
Stony ground
16 These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with
gladness;
2 Corinthians 4:4
whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ,
who is the image of God, should shine on them.
Romans 8:35-39
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or
nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:“For Your sake we are killed all day long;We are accounted as sheep
for the slaughter.”37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am
persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to
come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
James 1:2-5
2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith
produces [a]patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be [b]perfect and complete, lacking
nothing. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will
be given to him.
1 Thessalonians 2:13
For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard
from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works
in you who believe.
James 1:21
Doers—Not Hearers Only
Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which
is able to save your souls.
Among thorns
18 Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, 19 and the cares of this
world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes
unfruitful.
Matthew 6:24
You Cannot Serve God and Riches
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one
and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.
James 5:1-3
Rich Oppressors Will Be Judged
5 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! 2 Your riches [a]are
corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion
will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last
days.
1 Peter 5:6-7
6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due
time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
Matthew 6:25-34
Do Not Worry
25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your
body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air,
for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value
than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one [j]cubit to his [k]stature?28 “So why do you worry about
clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even
Solomon in all his glory was not [l]arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which
today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?31 “Therefore
do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these
things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom
of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness,
and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Good ground,
20 But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, [e]accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold,
some sixty, and some a hundred.”
Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 [b]gentleness, self-
control. Against such there is no law.
Ephesians 5:8-10
Walk in Light
8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of
the [a]Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.
Colossians 1:10
that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the
knowledge of God;
James 5:7
Be Patient and Persevering
Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the
earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.
2 Peter 1:5
Fruitful Growth in the Faith
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,
Philippians 2:12
Light Bearers
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence,
work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;
Revelation 22:12
Jesus Testifies to the Churches
“And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.
