1. Introduction
In today's world, the need for English proficiency has become a must. People
around the world are learning English for different purposes and needs. Despite all this
need for speaking English, not everyone can make it. Some people fail to get the
English Language proficiency, and consequently, frustration invades their minds and
end up giving up on their dream.
This paper discusses meticulously and straightforwardly different steps one can
take to be fluent in English. The learning technics that a learner can apply over and
over again to help him to speak English fluently. Not only that, it also looks at the
impact the English language has in the academic career. In here, it will be illustrated
that English can be of great importance for whoever thinks in pursuing a career in any
area.
Structurely, the paper is organized as the following: introduction, which
unveils that contents to be discussed; development, which is the discussion of the
content; conclusion, which is the sum up of the main points of the content, and finally,
a bibliography which is a list of sources consulted to produce the paper.

2. Literature Review
2.1. English Proficiency
English, a universally recognized language, is a crucial tool for communication
in today’s globalized world. It is no longer a luxury but a necessity for personal,
academic, and professional growth. However, achieving proficiency in English is a
journey that requires dedication, patience, and the right strategies.
The various methods that can be employed to improve English skills are:
immersive learning, active vocabulary building, effective communication skills,
writing proficiency, and use of technology (Harmer, 1989).
Firstly, immersive learning is one of the most effective ways to improve
English. This approach involves integrating English into your daily life, making it a
living language rather than a mere academic subject. Engage with English media such
as books, movies, podcasts, and music. This not only exposes you to different accents
and dialects but also familiarizes you with colloquial language and cultural nuances.
Secondly, expanding vocabulary is key to expressing thoughts and ideas more
accurately. Make it a habit to learn new words daily. However, rote memorization of
words is not enough. It’s essential to understand the context in which these words are
used. Reading diverse genres of books, articles, and blogs can provide this context and
help in vocabulary retention.
Thirdly, English learning is incomplete without effective communication skills.
Practice speaking English regularly, focusing on pronunciation and intonation.
Engaging in debates, group discussions, and public speaking can boost confidence and
improve fluency. Remember, making mistakes is part of the learning process, so don’t
shy away from opportunities to speak English (Lubis, 1988).
Furthermore, Writing is an essential component of English proficiency. It helps
in organizing thoughts and expressing them clearly. Start with simple sentences,
gradually moving to complex ones. Regularly writing essays, reports, or even daily

journal entries can significantly improve writing skills. Additionally, seeking feedback
on your writing can help identify areas of improvement.
In addition, In the digital age, technology can be a powerful ally in English
learning. There are numerous online platforms offering English courses, interactive
exercises, and language exchange programs. These resources provide flexibility and
personalized learning experiences. Furthermore, language apps can provide real-time
feedback on pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary.
In conclusion, Improving English is a continuous process that demands
consistent effort. The strategies discussed above provide a comprehensive approach to
English learning, encompassing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
Remember, the goal is not just to learn English but to make it a part of your identity.
With persistence and the right approach, English proficiency is an achievable goal.
2.1.1. The Impact of English in Academic Career
Currently, obtaining academic training is as important as mastering a second
language. With technological development and globalization, proficiency in English
allows for better opportunities in relationships, not academic and corporate
environment. Projects a cultured image that exudes the search for knowledge, personal
growth and flexibility of adaptation. When establishing business relationships,
speaking a second language allows for greater chances of business, in addition to
leading the individual to make more rational decisions, which can be a strong ally in
socioeconomic advancement. “Negotiating well is a skill key in personal and
professional life. Avoid conflicts and waste of money. No corporate environment,
depending on the role performed, this skill is fundamental to career success. With the
horizontalization of the world, the Negotiation in other languages has become
increasingly common” (Finardi & Porcino, 2014).
In today's world the English language fuels positively all the fields of academic
and business world. There's no doubt that whoever pursues an academic career is in a
process of preparing themselves for the employment world, which is demandful today
and English is one of the highly recommended requisites.

English skills can be useful in diffent fields, such as Information Technology,
finance, marketing, Law, public safety, corrections and security, health science,
business management and administration, education and training, hospitality and
tourism, science Technology, Engineering & Mathematics:Transportation,
Distribution & Logistics, travel and relocation. That's why Harmer (1989) calls
English a Lingua Franca.
First of all, if one is in Information Technology field, the English language
plays an important role in this area. The IT industry demands you to be familiar with
the basic IT terminologies like hardware, software, internet, etc. For collaborating and
understanding new updates in the world of Information Technology you should be
proficient in the English language.
Second of all, English plays a role in Finance, to understand bills, invoices,
rules and regulations, and new compliances of the world; you need to be familiar with
English. This helps you in understanding rules and regulations worldwide. It also
plays a role in Marketing, English is the most commonly used language on different
mediums like the internet, newspapers, or social media. So, in order to market your
products or services, you need to be familiar with English and use it to reach your
potential customers.
English can also be of great use in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and
Security. The worldwide laws, public safety, and security regulations are released in
English. So, if you wish to join this industry, you should be familiar with the universal
language, i.e., English (Calebe, 1980).
It's worth mentioning that English can also be of great use for those in Health
Science, since it is all about reaching out to people and talking to them about their
health to improve their living. So, in this case, knowing English will help you in
reaching out and connecting to audiences on a global level. In can also be of wide
impact in Business Management and Administration, to manage your own business
and its operations it is important for you to be proficient in English. This will help you
in getting more clients and managing your existing employees.
English can positively impact the Education and Training: To educate and train
students worldwide it is highly beneficial to know a commonly used language like

English. This will ensure that you reach maximum students and they can easily
understand what you teach.
Finally, the English language can have big impact on students pursuing a
career in Hospitality and Tourism: While traveling to another country, one of the main
issues tourists face is to learn how to communicate. By using a universal language like
English, this issue can be solved and anyone can travel anywhere easily and talk to
others.
3. Conclusion
In conclusion, achieving proficiency in English is a journey that requires
dedication, patience, and the right strategies. The various methods that can be
employed to improve English skills are: immersive learning, active vocabulary
building, effective communication skills, writing proficiency, and use of technology.
Improving English is a continuous process that demands consistent effort. The
strategies discussed above provide a comprehensive approach to English learning,
encompassing reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Remember, the goal is
not just to learn English but to make it a part of your identity. With persistence and the
right approach, English proficiency is an achievable goal.
