Very good. Politics, Technical core: Teaching and Learning and
Environment.
2. Abstraction
Our topic for today is all about Key Elements of School
as a Social System ( Culture, Politics, Technical Core:
Teaching and Learning and Environment).
Culture
Culture is an essential element of any social system,
including schools. It refers to the shared beliefs, values,
norms, traditions, and behaviors that shape the school's
identity. School culture influences how students,
teachers, and staff interact with each other and the
overall learning environment. It can include aspects
such as the school's mission, vision, and core values, as
well as the traditions and rituals that are celebrated
within the school community.
(The students are listening).
Culture, in the context of a school, is essentially the
shared beliefs, values, norms, traditions, and behaviors
that define the school's identity.
Beliefs and Values: These are the fundamental
principles that guide the behavior of the school
community. They might include beliefs about the
importance of education, the value of hard work, or the
significance of mutual respect. These beliefs and values
are often encapsulated in the school's mission and
vision statements.
Norms: Norms are the unwritten rules that govern
behavior within the school. They dictate what is
considered acceptable or unacceptable behavior within
the school community. For example, students raise their
hands to ask a question during class.
Traditions and Rituals: These are the recurring
activities that the school community participates in.
They could be annual events like a school fair, a sports
day, or regular activities like a weekly assembly. These
traditions and rituals contribute to a sense of
community and continuity within the school.
Behaviors: These are the actions and conduct of the
students, teachers, and staff within the school. They are
influenced by the school's beliefs, values, and norms,
and in turn, reinforce these elements of the school
culture.
A strong and positive school culture is crucial because
it sets the tone for all interactions within the school and
plays a significant role in student achievement and
satisfaction.
Politics
Politics within a school involves the distribution and
exercise of power and authority, influencing
decision-making processes, policies, and governance
structures. It encompasses the roles of administrators,
teachers, and staff, as well as relationships between
stakeholders like parents, students, and community
members. Understanding school politics is essential for
effective leadership and decision-making
Politics within a school refers to how power and
authority are distributed and used. It involves the
decision-making processes, policies, and structures that
govern the school's operations. School politics is visible
in the roles and responsibilities of administrators,
teachers, and staff, as well as the relationships between
different stakeholders like parents, students, and
community members. Understanding these dynamics is
essential for effective leadership and decision-making,
ensuring the school operates smoothly and serving the
best interests of the students.
Technical core: Teaching and Learning
The teaching-learning process is the technical core of
schools. All other activities are secondary to the basic
mission of teaching and learning, which shapes the
administrative decisions in schools. Learning occurs
when there is stable change in an individual’s
knowledge or behavior.
The technical core refers to the central focus of schools,
which is the process of teaching and learning. It is
considered the heart of the educational system. The
teaching-learning process involves the interaction
between teachers and students, where knowledge and
skills are imparted, and learning takes place. It
encompasses various instructional methods, strategies,
and resources used to engage students and facilitate
their understanding and growth. In the context of the
technical core, administrative decisions and policies are
shaped by the goal of enhancing teaching and learning.
School administrators and leaders prioritize creating an
environment that supports effective instruction and
student development. This includes decisions related to
curriculum design, instructional materials, teacher
professional development, and assessment practices.
The ultimate goal of the technical core is to facilitate
learning, which occurs when there is a stable change in
an individual's knowledge or behavior. By recognizing
the technical core as the primary focus, schools can
ensure that their efforts are aligned with the
fundamental mission of education, providing quality
teaching and learning experiences for students.
Environment
The school environment includes both the physical and
social aspects of the school. The physical environment
comprises the school buildings, classrooms, libraries,
laboratories, and other facilities. It should be safe,
well-maintained, and conducive to learning. The social
environment refers to the relationships, interactions,
and social dynamics among students, teachers, and
staff. A positive and supportive social environment
fosters a sense of belonging, collaboration, and mutual
respect.
Do you have any questions?
