Words and pictures

From their beginnings in newspapers, comics – which tell stories through pictures – have grown
to become a valuable creative industry around the world.
1

The comic books of today began in 1938 when the first Superman story was published. This event
started the Golden Age of Comic Books, when the idea of the superhero became popular. And
that interest grew and grew.
2

Since it began publishing its modern series of comics in 1961, the US company Marvel has
produced 27,000 different titles. Within these there are many superheroes and villains, each with
their own complex stories.
3

There are a growing number of comics based in different parts of the world that look at the issues
facing people who live there. In many places, comic books are a space where artists are free to be
creative. International comic book writers often explore the way the world is changing and how
this affects them.
4

Globally, the comic book industry is worth more than $4 billion, and movies based on comic book
characters continue to make huge profits at the cinema box office. But most of the titles come
from two companies. Marvel and DC produce 80% of all comic books and are now owned by
movie companies. This means that there aren’t many opportunities for small-scale comics to find
new readers or make money.
5

In 2021, a copy of the first Spiderman comic sold for $3.6 million. But while a few people profit
from old comic books, new comics aren’t going to make you millions. More copies are printed of
each comic, and more people keep them in perfect condition. Unlike a comic from the 1950s,
they aren’t rare enough to have more value than their original price.
6

A lot of directors complain that fewer new stories are being heard because studios are only
interested in making superhero movies. Some believe that these are too simple, with excitement
replacing plots. However, as long as millions of fans keep going to see their comic book heroes on
the big screen, the trend is unlikely to stop.

A This international market is shared mainly by two companies.

B Not everyone is a fan of comics and their characters though, especially in movie.
C Comic books have existed for a very long time.
D Comic books nowadays have reached a much better quality than in the past.
E There is often a big difference between the stories in the comics and the movies.
F Comic books aren’t just produced in America though.
G One reason people like comic books is that there is a character for everyone.
H Some comics are worth a lot of money.
I Many adults enjoy reading comic books all their lives.
