BENNETT UNIVERSITY
Course: Kinematics & Dynamics of Machines (EMEC208L)
ASSIGNMENT NO. 1 (Mechanisms and Machines)
1. Define: Kinematic link, Kinematic pair, Kinematic chain
2. Distinguish between (a) Mechanism and Machine (b) Analysis and Synthesis of
Mechanisms
3. Define Grashof’s law.
4. What are the quick-return mechanisms? Where are they used?
5. Define mechanical advantage and transmission angle of a mechanism?
6. Describe various inversions of a single slider crank mechanism with giving examples.
7. Describe various inversions of a double slider crank mechanism with giving examples.
8. The length of fixed link of a crank and slotted lever mechanism is 250 mm and crank
is 100 mm. Determine (a) inclination of the slotted lever with vertical in the extreme
position, (b) ratio of the time of cutting stroke to the time of return stroke, and (c) length
of stroke, if the length of slotted lever is 450 mm and the line of stroke passes through
the extreme positions of the free end of the lever.
9. Determine degree of freedom of Mechanisms,
(d)
(e) (f)
10. Identify types of mechanisms
\
11. A crank rocker mechanism has 70 mm fixed link, a 20 mm crank, a 50-mm coupler, and a 70-
mm rocker. Draw mechanism and determine the maximum and minimum values of the
transmission angle. Locate the two toggle positions and find corresponding to crank angles and
the transmission angles.
