Sinigang as Philippines’ National Dish
Introduction
Sinigang is a Filipino soup or stew characterized by its sour and savory taste. It is most
often associated with tamarind, although it can use other sour fruits and leaves as the souring
agent. It is one of the more popular dishes in Filipino cuisine.
Significance of the Study
The purpose of the study is to know the world about the dish Sinigang and why it is marked
as a national dish for Filipino comfort food that helps to cool the body during hot conditions due
to its tangy taste and has many variations that can be prepared in any way, depending on
preferences, Sinigang can be easily adjusted in both quantity and quality.
Background of the Study
Sinigang is a dish originated in the Philippines. Typically, it is composed of fish, meat,
vegetables, tomatoes and tamarind flavoring. The reason why it is called “sinigang” is that it was
a translation to the English word, “stew” which is true because of its method of cooking.
Sinigang is often assumed to be the national food of the Philippines because of how
common and how long it has been around, but it is in the top ten of the Filipino specialties along
with lechon, adobo, and lumpia.
This research has been conducted because this food is authentic in the way it has been
made over the course of time. While the flavoring to make the food sour has changed, the taste
has not. While different ingredients have been used, that’s how it’s always been, there are
different ways to make sinigang depending on the region of the Philippines you are from, but
nothing has changed drastically for this common Filipino dish.
Preliminary Literature Review
If a survey regarding the Philippines’ national food was conducted, then adobo and sinigang
would certainly be tied for the top spot. Both recipes represent the Filipino culture and many
consider these dishes as staples in the traditional family gathering.
Between these two dishes, many argue that sinigang is the dish most representative of the
Filipino palate. This is mostly because it can be customized according to any taste, budget,
season, and availability. Basically, it is a dish that can be enjoyed by all.
Even celebrities can’t enough of it. In the union of Philippine showbiz icons, Ding Dong
Dantes and Marian Rivera, Chef Margarita Fores whipped up shrimp sinigang for the couple’s
wedding which evaluate the current literature and justify why further study and research is
required.
Statement of the Problem/Objectives
No matter how many delicious dishes in the Philippines, one thing’s for sure: nothing can
beat the refreshing feeling one could get after tasting that sour, savory broth of sinigang during
a rainy day or a hot, summer afternoon.
Research questions of Obectives:
1. Why Sinigang is a Philippines national dish?
2. Why is Sinigang a hit among Filipinos?
3. What makes Sinigang different from other dishes?
Methodology
This study is concerned with understanding why sinigang is named as Philippines national
dish and how it differs from other dishes.
A dish like sinigang is something that’s extremely common to the Filipinos to the point where
each and every variation of the dish is entirely in their hands to control. It is this ability to be able
to customize the dish that makes it enjoyable to every Filipino’s taste. With that said, sinigang is
the kind of dish that can be served to meet many expectations anyone can have of the dish. It’s
entirely up to you, as the cook, to deliver.
Although foreigners have mixed views about this dish – claiming that it is too sour for their
taste – Filipinos remain undaunted over the negative views to their beloved sinigang.
Through interviews, tests, surveys, or checklists I enable to gather information with this
certain topic.
As a result of understanding the aims and objectives of this study and exploring previous
research similar to this topic. I feel using using a Qualitative method of data collection would be
most suitable because a Qualitative research is expressed in words. It is used to understand
concepts, thoughts or experiences. This type of research enables you to gather in-depth
insights on topics that are not well understood. From this information, this method of data
collection would be suitable for this study as it hopes to discover why Sinigang is the national
dish of the Philippines.
