OVERVIEW
"Sexual Violence and Women Workers" discusses the serious
issue of sexual violence experienced by women in the workplace
in Indonesia. This article reveals the shocking fact that 76% of
cases of violence against women in public spaces in 2019
involved sexual violence in the workplace.
OBJECTIVE
To analyze the relationship between sexual violence against
women workers and the ethical and cultural factors involved in
the workplace environment in Indonesia.

WOMEN IN THE WORK ENVIRONMENT
Over the past few decades, women have made significant
progress in the fight for workplace equality. However, it wasn't
until the 1970s that women were allowed to apply for credit cards
without male guarantors, and they could legally be fired for being
pregnant.
Many women have experienced the phenomenon of men assuming they are less
UNDERESTIMATION informed and behaving as though they are the experts, due to sexism. It's a
problem for women in the workplace, especially younger ones, who struggle to be
taken seriously even on topics they're experts on.
STATISTICS ON SEXUAL VIOLENCE AGAINST
WOMEN WORKERS
According to a report by Perempuan Mahardhika in 2017, revealing that out of
773 women workers in KBN Cakung, 437 had experienced sexual violence in one
form or another. The survivors of sexual violence included women who had
suffered verbal sexual harassment, physical sexual harassment, or both.
Shockingly, the report found that 252 women had experienced both types of
harassment. The report also disclosed that 66 percent (or 290 women) had been
subjected to unwanted sexual contact, while 32 percent (or 139 women) had been
groped by their supervisors. In addition, some women workers were hugged
against their will. These alarming statistics show that sexual violence is a serious
problem that is affecting a large number of women workers, and it is crucial that
measures are taken to prevent it from happening in the workplace.

Conclusion
Sexual violence is a pervasive issue plaguing women workers in
Indonesia. Statistics reveal a shocking number of women experiencing
harassment and abuse. Workplace cultures built on patriarchal norms
and a lack of awareness exacerbate the problem. Ethical considerations
require employers and coworkers to foster safe environments, while
cultural sensitivity is crucial in addressing the stigma surrounding
reporting.
The impact on women's well-being necessitates prevention strategies
like education programs and strong policies. Ultimately, a collaborative
effort by government, society, and advocacy groups is essential to enact
legal frameworks, shift cultural attitudes, and create a safe and
respectful work environment for all.
